To not tip the takeaway delivery guy?

Rockingdahorse · 30/11/2019 20:13

DH is out tonight, ordered myself a small pizza.

Came to 4.60, with delivery fee and 'card charge' the total was 8.50

Delivery driver dropped it off, but as I didn;t have any change I didn't tip. Felt bad about it, till I thought that if I tipped I would have paid more in 'charges' than my actual food.

AIBU?

Have never heard of delivery drivers being tipped. However, here in Devon everyone has shit wages so not surprised.

LadyAllegraImelda · 02/12/2019 19:47

I don't normally tip - partly because it costs so much to order food in anyway, partly because I don't like tipping and partly because I never have cash lying around, I will have paid by card. However having read this thread I'm going to start giving a £1, it's not much and I'd feel a bit silly giving only a £1 but clearly it's appreciated and everyone's £1 all adds up.

sunshinemode · 02/12/2019 20:25

By making people self employed you can get away with paying less than min wage legally which is why these jobs are so rubbish. Zero contract hours jobs often end up being less than min wage. Also truthfully min wage is pathetic and not a living wage.
I thought companies are no longer allowed to charge for using cards?

Jodie626 · 02/12/2019 21:04

Tipping is not something we do in the UK. Not really sure why people feel the need to here. I never tip. I grew up incredibly poor and I am still struggling now. If I want to treat myself I do not consider tipping the people paid to do their jobs. They get paid a wage. I have a minimum wage job and I dont get tipped for doing it. Why should they? If I happened the be rich someday then yes, I would love to help as many people as a I could. It should never be the expected thing.

Banana0pancakes · 02/12/2019 21:22

I'm doing a delivery job atm as were desperate for some extra money. I'd say 80% off people don't tip. I've come to expect it on just eat orders as they're normally paid in advance, cash ones are hit and miss. Some people literally wait for the 5p change if they've ordered an 11.95 special.
I think most people feel that they should be giving a tip but don't want to for whatever reason as most avoid eye contact and just stare at the bag, closing the door without acknowledging that theres a person in front of them.
Two nights ago it was absolutely freezing and the paths were so icy I was pulling myself along using the walls and gates trying not to fall over. I walked through boggy front gardens and got my feet all wet. It's a very unglamorous job and poorly paid. I get 25 for turning up and 1 a delivery. Interestingly it's usually the poorer areas where the better tippers are, there's a very, very expensive estate (400k+) from which not one person has ever given me a tip.
If you can tip please do. Even 50p is really appreciated.

I’ve never heard of tipping delivery drivers

Thumper77 · 02/12/2019 21:26

I used to work in a charity shop as a volunteer. Where as other charity shops pay bus fares and lunch money. This one didn't volunteers constantly had to pay out of there own pocket because the petty cash was used to give the area manager and manager a nice lunch. My point is I think employers should pay the employes better wages and stop scoffing all the money for themselfs and stop expecting employees to pay out for expences that the employer should be paying for.

DanceItOut · 02/12/2019 21:46

The only time I ever tip a delivery person is if the weather is absolutely horrendous. Like when we had snow a few years ago I ordered in some pizza for everyone for lunch and I gave them a tip for delivering because I wouldn't want to go out in that weather. Usually though I just pay online and by card so don't tip.

Emmak789 · 02/12/2019 23:05

I try to tip if I can afford it. Delivery drivers spend freezing cold days and evenings bringing us our food when we cant be bothered to go out so if they are nice I like to tip them. Also they usually get mimimum wage and dont always get any money for travel costs depending on where they work.

outherealone · 02/12/2019 23:28

I never thought of tipping. I often have deliveries because I’m too tired to cook. I’m on a low income single mum working and have disabilities. It’s rare that I have actual cash so just do the whole thing online. Nobody ever seems to hang around for a tip and I’m skint. If I get delivery it’s often because if I don’t then the kids don’t eat.

Oakenbeach · 02/12/2019 23:38

Having a culture where there’s the expectation that the worker will have their pay topped up by tips means there’s less incentive to pay a decent basic wage (or contractual payment if part of the gig economy).

The worker is then dependent entirely on the whim of the customer for a part of their pay, in effect taking workers rights back to medieval times! Tipping delivery drivers might appear kindly but promotes their piss poor treatment.

motherheroic · 03/12/2019 07:58

@Ated We don't care about the life of luxury you lead. Absolutely nothing to do with the thread.

lowlandLucky · 03/12/2019 08:26

The woman that delivers my monthly takeaway gets whatever is left out of the £25 i give her for the food, it bill is normally £21-£22.

Waytooearly · 03/12/2019 08:29

I'm sure delivery drivers really appreciate it when you promote their well-being by not tipping.

If you're that opposed to the whole scene, just fix yourself some food and don't get takeaways.

Localocal · 03/12/2019 08:53

I always tip them a pound or two.

Ated · 03/12/2019 09:58

@motherheroic: I don't lead a luxury lifestyle but I work for myself and as part of the context of the thread it was suggested that people just can't change jobs easily. Commentators keep going on about tipping helps because the drivers get such poor money, maybe they do, but that isn't a reason to tip. The responsibility lies with the business and the driver, not the purchaser of the service. I started at the bottom, earning a pittance and saw the advantage of studying and learning new skills which anyone can do. You don't have to accept poor wages but you do need to make an effort.

Onelovelyone · 03/12/2019 10:09

I think it is very unreasonable not to tip a delivery drive (if the service is good). Everyone knows that they are very badly paid and that they rely upon the tips - it’s scandalous how badly they are treated by larger companies. The delivery charge goes directly to the company so the driver receives none of it. Tipping is a small token of appreciation and even if it is a small tip, makes a difference.

KarmaStar · 03/12/2019 11:10

Always tip.though rarely have a take away, delivery is free.delivery guy always checks food is the correct order,is hot, that we are happy.he is cheerful.,happy to tip him, especially on a freezing dark night😀

Vulpine · 03/12/2019 11:13

Always tip

motherheroic · 03/12/2019 11:16

@Ated Right so how do we know these people aren't making an effort? They could be retraining, or looking for a better job in the meantime. Not everyone has the luxury of just packing their job in and blindly leaping to another.

This is a U.K.-based forum. I think you’ve mistaken it for a USA-based forum!

threatmatrix · 03/12/2019 12:18

Because waiters have to go above and beyond. Listening to people talking shot and all there problems, cleaning the big mess they and there brats leave behind, smiling nicely when some twat is changing the menu knowing the chef is going to rip you a new arsehole, helping disabled people in and out, trying your best to stop a screaming baby so twats like you can enjoy your meal. The list is endless. If you don’t tip stay the fuck indoors.

threatmatrix · 03/12/2019 12:27

“Just bring food” 😂😂🙄🙄 you have no idea. Please don’t ever eat out again. You must be eating in real cheap places
