Do we fancy a full on civil war? Have we all gone completely mad? This is democracy? AIBU to say this is several steps too far?

I thought the Queen was on her holidays is he really going to go to Balmoral and ask that ? We are doomed !

araiwa · 28/08/2019 10:26

Could you explain politically legally and constitutionally what this means

Tia

Bunglefromrainbow · 28/08/2019 10:27

Had a full on LOL at civil War. This is the UK, we won't even organise a decent protest march never mind start a civil war.

I strongly disagree with this course of action (the whole Brexit thing never mind closing parliament) but his hands are a bit tied. He wants to get Brexit through and Parliament are possibly stopping the EU from taking the risks and threat seriously.

Several steps too far? Probably but what did we expect. He can't let Brexit slide past 31st October as he'd be finished before he started.

Government to ask Queen to suspend Parliament www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-49493632

Major is gunning for him. Interesting to see what happens. And yes, it feels more than a bit mad right now.

WaterSheep · 28/08/2019 10:32

I've got to say I didn't see that coming!

Alsohuman · 28/08/2019 10:32

It’s a right wing coup. So much for bloody democracy.

elderlyhippo · 28/08/2019 10:33

How many threads are we going to have on this!

Is it actually a Rees-Mogg ploy to split comment between all of them (no-one is going to keep up with each and every one) and thus dilute opinion?

longwayoff · 28/08/2019 10:34

No araiwa, get a newspaper, read a news site. They will explain it to your satisfaction.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 28/08/2019 10:34

I can't believe it's come to this. It's appalling. It's a Constitutional crisis. If something can't be passed by the democratic will of Parliament it shouldn't be passed at all.

Deadsetgo · 28/08/2019 10:35

It’s not true though.

Alsohuman · 28/08/2019 10:36

Fake news @Deadsetgo? Not according to all the news sites.

FinallyHere · 28/08/2019 10:37

We are indeed living in interesting times

SemperIdem · 28/08/2019 10:37

Surely the Queen will refuse?

Deadsetgo · 28/08/2019 10:37

Fake news

Alsohuman · 28/08/2019 10:39

ODFOD. Every news site’s reporting it and James Cleverley - a Tory minister - has confirmed it.

Stressedout10 · 28/08/2019 10:39

Well if he gets it Ireland will explode and Scotland will leave the UK.
As I want an independent Scotland I'm torn between wanting him to do it and absolute terror over how bad things will get

Iggly · 28/08/2019 10:41

Ah that old phrase “Fake News”

Which actually translates to “news I don’t like the sound of” or “factual reporting which I don’t like”

FinallyHere · 28/08/2019 10:41

Parliament are possibly stopping the EU from taking the risks and threat seriously.

The real risks are to us, the people of the UK. If our politicians are prepared to put us at risk, surely that is within the scope of our nation state, our sovereignty.

No one should give in to threats of suicide, never mind the EU

Tellmetruth4 · 28/08/2019 10:42

If this exact scenario was playing out in South America or Africa we’d be calling it what it is - a coup. The British like to think we’re above all of that type of third world stuff but our ruling class are every bit just as power hungry and nasty as many others, just with posh accents and suits on.

bwydda · 28/08/2019 10:44

It is a right wing coup and we are all just sitting ducks accepting it. I despair .

Biologyquestion · 28/08/2019 10:46

summermadsession · 28/08/2019 10:51

It's likely the Queen will do nothing. What is the point of the Queen as Head of State again? - can someone explain it to me - it's a question I have never found a satisfactory answer to.

longwayoff · 28/08/2019 10:52

Hopefully the Queen is cognizant of what happened to Charles 1.

OP posts:
Iggly · 28/08/2019 10:54

The Queen is a figurehead but that’s not really the point here. Boris Johnson is taking power out of the hands of MPs - who are our representatives.

Butterymuffin · 28/08/2019 10:55

I am pessimistic the Queen will resist this. She will be fearful of rocking the boat. It'll be down to politicians to do it 😫
