To think that 30g (or even 50g) cereal is not enough? (Lighthearted)

Suggested serving size of most cereals is 30g/50g. If I ate that little for breakfast I would be hungry again an hour later.

I normally have 100g! Am I just a pig??

I always have 45g porridge, otherwise I need heaps of carby fruit like bananas.

Gth1234 · 09/06/2019 22:28

@BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo

the shreddies picture looks fine to me.

I am diabetic, and I can only say I know how much that amount of cereal would increase my blood sugar.

If I stay in a hotel, I can eat that cereal, a cooked breakfast, and some toast - but I know I shouldn't.

EveHen · 09/06/2019 22:34

I used to eat 8 Weetbix, and my brother would eat 12. We were both working physical jobs and were skinny. I still eat a nassive bowl of alpen with fruit and Yoghurt. Yum!

Thismummyruns · 09/06/2019 22:36

Agree, that wouldn't even touch the sides

BonAccordSpur · 09/06/2019 22:38

Back when i used to eat cereals id do a small pyrex dish&still not be satisfied so i feel ur pain😂ive been on protein(eggs)and lg salad for a long time now&wish id switched years ago..DC been raised on eggs4brekky too..cereals are empty carbs

When I stayed abroad I was shocked to learn that 'continental breakfast' isn't just a phrase. Visiting a young-ish urban couple they fed us their standard fare - rye bread, smoked cheese, cooked meat. I sometimes have that for breakfast now (with a tomato!)
In my defence, I don't think I had at that point met any English people who regularly had an English breakfast on a work day in their own home.
I still can't do that 'heat up any food for breakfast'. It has to be fairly bland. And not soup. No idea why.

tor8181 · 09/06/2019 23:03

our household wouldnt even know how much that is or how far up the bowl

we pour as much as we want and then add the milk and as i bought giant bowls just for cereal its a lot

ClosedTheBlueEyes · 09/06/2019 23:49

Damn you all.

I've just had to have a big bowl of coco pops. With full fat milk. And cream.

I'll make up for it tomorrow by only allowing myself to lick a photograph of an apple all day.

Baloonphobia · 10/06/2019 00:04

Surely the point of cereal is to eat it when you can't be arsed/are too hungover to cook? Many's the day a load of cereal eaten out of a saucepan saved me as a poor student.

LellyMcKelly · 10/06/2019 00:06

Coco Pops is basically the result of some marketing genius persuading people that it’s fine to eat pudding for breakfast. And those Belvita breakfast biscuits - we’ve bought into the idea that it’s fine to eat 4 digestives in the morning. I have a tuna or ham sandwich on wholemeal for breakfast. It’s far more filling and much nicer than cereal which either tastes like rope or has more sugar in it than a can of Coke.

PestyMachtubernahme · 10/06/2019 00:09

I like egg fried rice for breakfast, with loads of veggies.
Or fritters made with leftover veggies, lentil flour and eggs.
Or dal Confused

I have obviously spent too long overseas.

IM0GEN · 10/06/2019 00:22

I’d be starving by mid morning if I ate cereal or toast for breakfast.

I have eggs with ham and tomatoes or a tiny piece of smoked salmon or grated cheese .

Or greek yoghurt and berries.

Schnitzelvonkrumb · 10/06/2019 07:29

My DD(12) probably does have 30g cereal in some tiny bowls we have. I wouldn't measure or weigh it as a rule but have done out of interest before, and thought
a) the portion sizes seem pretty tiny,
b) the pictures on the packs must use really tiny bowls or perhaps broke the handle of a teacup and
c) in their suggested portion size the cereal:milk ratio is all wrong!!
DH usually has eggs on toast or avocados on toast and sometimes stinks out the house with kippers but if he eats cereal he would have 4 weetabix or a massive bowl of cereal certainly way more than 30g.

origamiunicorn · 10/06/2019 07:37

Saw a chocolate bar the other day that said "serves 5" Hahahahahahaaaa Blush

violetbunny · 10/06/2019 07:55

I have exactly 50g every day (I weigh it), usually with 100g yoghurt and a cup of berries. That way it's more filling than plain cereal and milk (and less carbs than if I had the equivalent in just cereal and milk)

Unfinishedkitchen · 10/06/2019 07:58

Notice how the picture in the advert is always a big bowl? Maybe they should be done by advertising watchdog for misleading people. I didn’t clock for ages that a portion wasn’t at least half a bowl.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 10/06/2019 08:03

I eat my cereal out of the mixing bowl (genuinely) because I like to eat loads. I'm size 8. So 30g is def not enough.

icecreamsundae32 · 10/06/2019 08:14

Just weighed my usual amount of shredded wheats - 58g so basically double the recommenced portion. Oh well

Elefant1 · 10/06/2019 09:57

I used to love oats for Breakfast but I have IBS and can't eat them any more. I now buy Lidl cornflakes, they are no added sugar so only 0.4g per 30g serving. I have about 60g so only 0.8g of sugar which isn't too bad.

Sofasurfingsally · 11/06/2019 22:41

If you add 100g milk, some water, and a small banana to 35g porridge, you have a decent portion. If it's not enough, add a dollop of yogurt. Very balanced, too.

happymemememe1234 · 08/10/2023 12:02

No its not wrong if you do 50 not 30

happymemememe1234 · 08/10/2023 12:03

Do 50 gams not 30

TheGoogleMum · 08/10/2023 12:05

Depends on the cereal a bit, a light cereal like rice crispies you get a lot for 30g

Just a bit more than an ounce, to be precise :D

5foot5 · 08/10/2023 23:20

DH and I are doing 5:2 at the moment. On fast days we have breakfast and dinner but no lunch.

Tomorrow is a fast day so breakfast is 30g bran flakes with 125ml of semi skimmed milk. TBH it's not bad if you eat slowly.

Normal breakfast is home made muesli with home made yoghurt. Never weighed my serving but it is probably more than 30g. Bloody tasty though. Especially following a fast day.
