To think that 30g (or even 50g) cereal is not enough? (Lighthearted)

Suggested serving size of most cereals is 30g/50g. If I ate that little for breakfast I would be hungry again an hour later.

I normally have 100g! Am I just a pig??

It's not enough. As soon as I started weighing my cereal I realised it's a terrible breakfast as it's just not filling.

Gave up and switched to real food.

motherofgod2 · 09/06/2019 08:59

It's just a ploy to make you think it's healthier than it is. If I'm having cereal I eat 2 shredded wheat with a banana or 40g of porridge and it does me fine until lunch. I used to eat honey nut cheerios but I'd need about 100g to fill me up and they're full of sugar so I cut that out.

Toast and eggs is nicer though !

kateandme · 09/06/2019 09:00

nope it stupid.we had proper bowls and all the people i know have had proper bowls for life and none of us/them are obese or even slightly overweight.

Dullardmullard · 09/06/2019 09:01

Cereal should be banned it’s full of crap

Now a fry up well that’s just yummy and fills you up to no ends.

HeartZone · 09/06/2019 09:03

I agree about using a smaller bowl.

And porridge is the way to go. Add seeds, fruit, nat yoghurt. Filling.

BobbyBrewstersMagicTorch · 09/06/2019 09:03

I think it depends on the cereal. 40g of porridge will last me til lunch whereas I'd need about 4 bowls of rice krispies to do the same job.

Minttea2 · 09/06/2019 09:06

I'm glad it's not just me! I have no added sugar muesli so it's only 4% sugar, but very high in calories per gram. Trying to cut down but finding it very difficult!

JustDanceAddict · 09/06/2019 09:06

Depends on the cereal and if you eat anything else with it. Rice crispies won’t, porridge with a banana will.

Iwantacookie · 09/06/2019 09:09

This annoys me with everything.
Easter I was reading the back of a small Easter egg and it was 5 portions! A small Easter egg breaks in 2 that means there are 2 portions not 5.

Cereal is the devil's work. Even porridge doesn't make me full right up till lunch.

I never have an idea what to eat for breakfast. It's a minefield

PickAChew · 09/06/2019 09:09

It's not filling, so I have a banana with it. I usually have 40g of muesli. Processed cereals don't fill me up in any quantity.

Jinglejanglefish · 09/06/2019 09:11

It's so they can say that a portion only contains X amount of sugar, knowing full well that most people do not just eat the recommended portion. That's why cereal is a crap breakfast!

Loveislandaddict · 09/06/2019 09:17

I agree totally, and I have just eaten my no added sugar muesli also.

During the week, i’ve Switched to porridge with (defrosted) frozen fruit. I only have 40g of that, but that’s partly because it swells up in the microwave. With the fruit, it’s okay.

whyohwhyowhydididoit · 09/06/2019 09:17

I agree that the problem is looking on processed cereal as a whole breakfast. As part of a breakfast it’s ok but I don’t think on its own it’s enough. You need fibre and more protein than a couple of ounces of milk if you want to stay full for a few hours.

TheNoodlesIncident · 09/06/2019 09:19

I prefer granola to cereal as I have breakfast before 7am and will be hungry by 12, but I know I have far too much granola and need to cut back. I ought to have a bowl with a Load Level mark round the inside, like a skip Grin I'd like to have toast more often but the amount of butter I put on toast is criminal and doesn't help my diet or cholesterol levels.

I've been tempted before to put 30g of rice crispies in a pestle and mortar and see just how much physical matter is actually there, a thimbleful is my guess

mondaysaturday · 09/06/2019 09:20

I have no added sugar muesli so it's only 4% sugar, but very high in calories per gram. Trying to cut down but finding it very difficult!

You could try making your breakfasts most protein rich, which should help you feel fuller and more satisfied. A Skyr or Arla yoghurt or, if you want something with a cereal feel, one of the Yeo and Go pots or some bircher or overnight oats in yoghurt maybe? Eggs also make a good protein rich breakfast.

@PrincessMary Grin Grin

keep posting stuff - it's making me laugh here

Orangeballon · 09/06/2019 09:20

Have poached eggs on toast, more protein, and makes you feelfuller.

Pineappleunder · 09/06/2019 09:22

I find this with so many foods!
I was complaining about halloumi yesterday. What is the point in having nutritional information for 30g (1/8 of a pack) when everyone will have to do algebra to work out what an actual portion contains!
Does anyone REALLY go through the faff of cooking one small slice of halloumi at a time?

Namechangeishard · 09/06/2019 09:22

I measure out 30g of oats for breakfast that I pour 1/4 cup of OJ on rather than have hot with milk. I also have a banana. It gets me through to mid morning when I have a cuppa (if I’m lucky) & an apple.

motherheroic · 09/06/2019 09:24

Depends on the cereal. I have a cranberry granola mix which is more than enough. If it was something like rice krispies I would think it was meagre.

PregnantOnPurpose · 09/06/2019 09:25

..well, you've just set off an incredible craving for cereal now. About the only thing I dint have in the house. Thanks OP.

GPatz · 09/06/2019 09:25

'Most cereals are so sugary you may as well eat cake'.

And that's the validation I needed, right there.

Oblomov19 · 09/06/2019 09:28

As a treat, on holiday I bought a selection pack. ds's were shocked what one box, 30g looked like, and so ate 2 boxes for each breakfast. This just confirms that our portion control is skewed.

Splodgetastic · 09/06/2019 09:40

I have always struggled with cereal and with what to have for breakfast generally. I know what people mean when they say they are hungrier after a bowl of cereal than if they hadn’t had anything! I think it may be to do with insulin spikes or something. I asked my DF a while ago what he used to have for breakfast when he was a young man (this is relevant because he had a physical job so needed something with a lot of energy to keep him going) and he said he would have porridge or eggs and toast, and cereal was something they had as a treat (I’m not sure whether this was instead of or with, say, eggs). At home he had porridge or muesli, but when he comes to my house to stay he always has cereal (my DH has this for breakfast), so I guess he does still think of it as a treat. I know porridge and muesli are cereals, but I’m talking about corn flakes and more refined cereal products. I only eat corn flakes if I am poorly or nervous and can’t face real food!

Comefromaway · 09/06/2019 09:50

Depends what you are having. Ds has Weetabix Protein Crunch and 30g of that with milk or a yoghurt and some fruit is fine.

Similarly I find 2 weetabix is fine and dd will have porridge or shreddies with a Greek yoghurt and a handful of berries.

If however it’s rice crispiest that’s just like eating air!
