To think that 30g (or even 50g) cereal is not enough? (Lighthearted)

Suggested serving size of most cereals is 30g/50g. If I ate that little for breakfast I would be hungry again an hour later.

I normally have 100g! Am I just a pig??

A bowl of cereal might not be popular in certain dieting circles, but from an overall health point of view, it is probably better than bacon for breakfast every morning!

Overmydeadbody456 · 09/06/2019 10:44

I agree Op. I had a meagre bowl of crunch nut cornflakes at 8am and I’ve been starving since about 9am. I’m about to cave in and have a slice of ‘cheese on toast’

My DS is nearly 3 and even he has 2 weetabix to himself (heaped with fruit on top).

Alaimo · 09/06/2019 10:46

Depends on what I eat it with. Cereal & milk: need at least 100g of cereal. If I eat cereal with yoghurt and fruit I usually find 50g of cereal is enough.

SummerHouse · 09/06/2019 10:46

I think they are saying "look how few calories are in a serving!!! P.S a serving is a quarter of what you think it is you big pig."

JaneJeffer · 09/06/2019 10:49

I have about 5 times that and I'm not overweight.

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 09/06/2019 11:03

I've always wondered what type of egg people have for breakfast?

If i have eggs its poached eggs on toast but in my head i feel fried eggs are more popular, but the oil can't be healthy, i doubt people are downing raw eggs, and seems weird to me just to eat a normal boiled egg by itself (although i have admitted fancied a boiled egg by itself before), i guess you could scramble eggs. Those seem the most obvious choices

Pinkvoid · 09/06/2019 11:04

I agree but most people are hungry after cereal, it’s basically sugary air.

Branleuse · 09/06/2019 11:04

I eat my cereal before bed, and 30g is about two thirds of a mugful and thats plenty really. I think if you need a lot more cereal than that, then maybe look for a better value breakfast with regards to filling you up for the calories.
I also find that using full fat milk fills you up a lot more for a lot longer, yet for only about 20 or 30 calories more. try it and see

orangeshoebox · 09/06/2019 11:06

I've always wondered what type of egg people have for breakfast?

soft boiled 'dippy' eggs or (microwave) scrambled eggs.

BrokenWing · 09/06/2019 11:10

30g of Porridge is more filing than cereal, add in a banana to sweeten and it should last until lunchtime and also gives you one of your 5 a day too.

YesQueen · 09/06/2019 11:12

@FrustratedTeddyLamp I have scrambled eggs, sometimes with some shredded ham or goats cheese or grated cheddar
Or an omelette with mushrooms, ham and cheese
Or porridge with raspberries and peanut butter
Summer is usually Greek yoghurt with strawberries

agirlhasnonameX · 09/06/2019 11:13

It really depends on what kind of cereal you have
I agree with this. I have 30g of a protein rich cereal, with an oz of ground almond and fruit and a piece of wholemeal toast and it keeps me full till lunchtime.

30g of rice crispies wouldn't do a thing for me.

Bloomburger · 09/06/2019 11:18

DS skinny streak of piss at 6ft 14 year old is most impressed that he eats a whole sleeve of weetabix my wallet not quite so much!!

Beechview · 09/06/2019 11:19

Also eating 30g of cereal with yoghurt is more filling than 30g of cereal with milk.
I’m actually less hungry by lunchtime if I don’t eat any breakfast than if I eat any kind of cereal.

Eliza9919 · 09/06/2019 11:22

I don't like the 'healthy' cereal. I like Coco pops. Or crunchy nut cornflakes. So we don't buy or eat cereal in this house, although last week I bought some Aldi tropical granola and their activia yoghurts. I doubt that's healthy but I'm going back to low carb this week so it will be scrambled egg or omelette from now on 💪

Cereal is the one area I go way over the portion size. I don’t eat breakfast often but have the odd bowl of cereal here and there, occasionally for my evening meal if it’s late and I can’t be bothered cooking.

That and veggies, I always have way more than a single portion size of them. Everything else if pretty easy to stick to.

I think a lot of people would be surprised by recommend portion sizes in food if they looked properly. Pasta or rice for example, it’s a lot less than you would think. I do think it’s played a part in the obesity crisis we have at the moment. I often see threads on here such as ‘how much your toddler eats for breakfast’ and find it surprising when they list 3 wheetabix with whole milk, 2 slices of toast with peanut butter, a banana, a pot of yogurt and a handful of strawberries all washed down with a glass of orange juice. That is a massive breakfast for anyone let alone a small person. If I ate all that for breakfast I wouldn’t be able to eat anymore until my evening meal. I know these small children then go on to have multiple snack through the day as well as lunch and dinner. Then the parents can’t figure out why their children are overweight as they eat healthy (which they probably do). It’s not just unhealthy food that can make you overweight, too much healthy food will do the same thing.

scratchyfluffface · 09/06/2019 11:48

I have half a weetabix at 7 and that lasts me until the next day. On the odd occasion it doesn’t I’d have a quarter of a grape. Never more. There’s SO much sugar in fruit you may as well inject donuts into your eyes than eat a full grape.

🤣🤣🤣

Gth1234 · 09/06/2019 11:52

@Minttea2

how heavy are you, etc. 100gm sounds a lot.

Gth1234 · 09/06/2019 11:53

@scratchyfluffface

A full grape? are you crazy. How much sugar can there be in a full grape. A full grape with the water removed is just a single raisin or sultana.

Freyasmum1 · 09/06/2019 11:59

I tend to eat the whole box Blush

FloofenHoofen · 09/06/2019 12:09

I have 30/40g when I'm on a deficit. Lol.

SkintAsASkintThing · 09/06/2019 12:23

DS has what we call posh porridge.

Basically porridge made up cold the night before with berries and milk then heated in the morning. The porridge soaks up all the milk and juice from the berries so his 40g of porridge seems a lot more satisfying.

Comefromaway · 09/06/2019 13:02

I usually have scrambled egg on toast for breakfast. Made with just milk, no butter or oil. It fills me up.

Comefromaway · 09/06/2019 13:03

Bacon, if you grill it in a way where the fat drains away might be very salty, but it’s a pretty nutritious, filing breKfSt.

Soov567 · 09/06/2019 13:41

40g of all bran is quite filling, also very boring so no temptation to eat more than the recommended amount although I do often want to eat lots of chocolate biscuits after!
