To think that 30g (or even 50g) cereal is not enough? (Lighthearted)

Suggested serving size of most cereals is 30g/50g. If I ate that little for breakfast I would be hungry again an hour later.

I normally have 100g! Am I just a pig??

OP posts:

There was a YouTube video I watched recently where she only ate the recommended portion size of a wide variety of processed foods. It was ridiculous. It was obvious the manufacturers are just having a laugh. No one expects anyone to stick to portion size.

orangeshoebox · 09/06/2019 09:55

yanbu
it isn't a lot.
but id you add a good protein source, like an egg and some fruit it becomes a wholesome meal that will keep you satisfied.

Fillypants · 09/06/2019 09:57

I made a switch to organic gluten free oats (I'm gluten intolerant) to replace other cereal.. With seeds and berries, absolutely lovely, really enjoyed it as I love cereal. It gave me the most horrific stomach cramps so gave up and back to not so healthy cereal. Sad

BackOnceAgainWithABurnerEmail · 09/06/2019 10:00

Totally agree. I switched to 40g oats with teaspoon peanut butter and tablespoon Aldi linseed mix made with hot water and a splash of milk (personal preference) instead. Really pretty filling and no added sugar.

(One wheatabix - hahahahaha!)

MiddleClassProblem · 09/06/2019 10:04

Has anyone looked at the serving suggestions on the back of a pack of 200g feta? Tesco’s day one pack is 6 portions which seems stingy but Asda’s is 8! That’s like the same size as a cherry tomato!

AwdBovril · 09/06/2019 10:06

This is why I don't eat boxed cereals. Sugary crap that are pretty much designed to leave you hungry very quickly afterwards. Porridge or overnight oats with fresh fruit, yoghurt with fruit & some seeds & granola on top, slice of toast with eggs (I like the dark rye pumpernickel bread for this). All much better options. Even a more substantial cooked breakfast is a better option if you consider it as your main meal of the day.

Breakfast cereal is a massive con & I am baffled why people are still falling for it.

Nuttyaboutnutella · 09/06/2019 10:08

I agree OP. The portion sizes that are recommended are meagre and not worth eating. That being said, sometimes I do just fancy a bowl of cereals in the morning but prefer plainer cereals (Shreddies, Weetabix, bran flakes, etc) which I Just bulk out with banana or other fruits.

I recently started eating plain Greek yoghurt with a variety of fruit or a little bit of muesli and a banana. Or toast with peanut butter and fruit, or porridge. (Trying to reduce my sweet tooth slowly).

I can't stomach eggs first thing in the morning and only have a cooked breakfast if we're staying in a hotel.

ContessaIsOnADietDammit · 09/06/2019 10:08

I think 50g is about right! I am on a diet though.... I can eat that and then have my snacks throughout the day, whereas if I eat 100g cereal and then have all my snacks, I put on weight. I could just eat the 100g and have no snacks, but that's crazy talk Grin

FriarTuck · 09/06/2019 10:11

Let's put it this way - last week I had the 40g recommended helping (weighed out, 240 calories inc milk) for breakfast. I then had to endure a rumbling stomach in church!! Do you know how embarrassing that is? The temptation to mug people for their communion wafers just to stop the noise was almost too much....
This morning I had rolls - 2 of them. 400 calories. No rumbling.
Just saying.
(I guess it does depend on the cereal)

Rollerbird · 09/06/2019 10:19

I weigh 40g oats. Porridge, 15 g chia seeds, an egg (separately), and zero fat Greek yoghurt.
Yum and very filling

icecreamsundae32 · 09/06/2019 10:22

Porridge 30g oats is prob enough and if I had weetabix I'd only have 2, but cereal - no way! I like cereal I have a large bowl full, don't weigh it but I suspect it's at least double... I am in no way obese I'm size 8. I don't snack but I eat lunch by 12 or I'd be starving again.

orangeshoebox · 09/06/2019 10:22

filly do the switch slowly. you body needs to get used to having more fibre.

MargaretHoulihan · 09/06/2019 10:26

I would have 30g of muesli mixed with 100g of yogurt if I was having cereal for breakfast.

Most cereal has basically the same nutritional value as cookies.

Eistigi · 09/06/2019 10:28

my husband he said "Well you're supposed to have some toast as well"
Brilliant!😂

MargaretHoulihan · 09/06/2019 10:29

All Bran has tons of sugar in it. As do Bran Flakes.

icecreamsundae32 · 09/06/2019 10:29

@Iwantacookie lol about Easter egg being 5 portions 😂 on the back of a pack of jelly babies, it says 4 jelly babies is a portion....

leiaskye · 09/06/2019 10:32

I recently joined Slimming World.

I can have 30-40g cereal (depending on which one), or eggs, beans, tomatoes, turkey rashers & mushrooms, plus 2 slices of toast if I so wish.

Guess which one I’m choosing.

Lost 9.5lbs in 4 weeks.

icecreamsundae32 · 09/06/2019 10:32

Wish I liked bananas as I know they are a more filling fruit, but I just don't like the texture or taste.... I could have a banana milkshake though which is odd!

Poetryinaction · 09/06/2019 10:34

I don't understand why people always say that cereal is just sugar and air and not filling. It really isn't.
A decent sized bowl of cereal (or two) with semi skimmed mill is fine for breakfast. Whole grain cereals, or porridge are best of course. They are really not as evil as everyone makes out. And it's fine to have 600+ calories in a big serving of cereal, as you need 2000 a day. This is the start of the day.

1moremum · 09/06/2019 10:36

grape nuts is the only cereal I know that the serving size, 25 g, with milk, is enough. I remember as a kid pouring as much grape nuts the usual sort of amount of cereal and getting in massive amounts of trouble for wasting it because even after I was full and stuffing it in anyway, I had to give up. it was solid sludge by that time as well. my brother did this once too. we didn't weight it but quickly learned to pour barely enough to cover the bottom of the bowl.

Now I eat the measured amount, with nf greek yogurt and defrosted berries as a slimming world breakfast option. keeps me full.

Mumsie448 · 09/06/2019 10:37

It really depends on what kind of cereal you have. Cereals high in sugar give a short term boost, but will definitely leave you hungry by mid-morning.
Porrideg oats should last until lunctime, as they are slow release sugar, and often recommended if you are on the GI diet
Protein beakfasts should last you to lunch time.
I struggle myself with portion control

mumwon · 09/06/2019 10:40

interesting a large pack of cereals refer to "normal" child portion as 30-35 & adult portion as 50 upwards!

Redhanger · 09/06/2019 10:40

I can’t eat breakfast or my stomach is rumbling all morning and all I can think about is my next feed.

VanillaLatteAndCake · 09/06/2019 10:41

30g of cereal is ridiculous. I have 2-3 Weetabix and my 3 year old has 2.
