To think that 30g (or even 50g) cereal is not enough? (Lighthearted)

Suggested serving size of most cereals is 30g/50g. If I ate that little for breakfast I would be hungry again an hour later.

I normally have 100g! Am I just a pig??

I agree, but I am also overweight 😟

MashedSpud · 09/06/2019 08:01

I have 30g or 40g if I’m quite hungry.

DH says that looks meagre but he can eat a whole box in one sitting.

IStillMissBlockbuster · 09/06/2019 08:01

YANBU. If that was coco pops i'd pretty much inhale it just from fumes escaping the packet.

UnicornBrexit · 09/06/2019 08:02

This is why we have an obesity problem, lack of portion control. Top up with fruit.

darkriver19886 · 09/06/2019 08:02

YANBU. It's never enough.

ShrinkWrap · 09/06/2019 08:02

I don’t consider this to be a lighthearted matter. I need about half a box or my stomach would be auto-digesting by 10am...

Sux2buthen · 09/06/2019 08:03

Yes fruit, the most unfilling item there is

ShrinkWrap · 09/06/2019 08:03

Oh I see the lighthearted comment was directed towards unicorn et al

Sockworkshop · 09/06/2019 08:04

Cereal is rank
It never fills you up ,thats the point.

Silversky70 · 09/06/2019 08:04

I'm having all bran: 40g is plenty!!!

AJPTaylor · 09/06/2019 08:04

I have weetabix or oatso simple. Anything else that needs weighing looks too little.

SnuggyBuggy · 09/06/2019 08:05

I've limited myself to this before when taking a healthy breakfast to work and it's crap. I could fit it into a small tupperwear box, it could never be called "a bowl of cereal"

JockTamsonsBairns · 09/06/2019 08:06

This is Mumsnet. You're going to get plenty of people coming on to say "30g?! Shock That's loads! I only have 20g then couldn't face another thing until my evening meal" Hmm

camelfinger · 09/06/2019 08:08

Agree. It’s hardly worth soiling crockery for 30g.

roses2 · 09/06/2019 08:08

I have one weetabix at 8am. I them drink a cup of tea every hour until 12pm when I have lunch. No snack in between. Fills me up just fine.

UnicornBrexit · 09/06/2019 08:08

@ShrinkWrap talking for everyone else.

Teacakeandalatte · 09/06/2019 08:11

Well you have to look at this the other way round if 30g is not what most people would find filling for breakfast should manufacturers be allowed to use this as their suggested portion? Giving a false view of how healthy the cereal is.

Poetryinaction · 09/06/2019 08:12

It's not enough. Or enough calories. I am not overweight but eat 2 x proper bowlfuls of cereal in the morning. It is one of your 3 meals a day and you have all day to use the energy. So you should have lots!

OldUnit · 09/06/2019 08:12

Meh, they 'have' to say 30g because it's generally full of sugar & crap.

Life is pain.

notso · 09/06/2019 08:12

If I eat cereal I feel hungrier by mid-morning than if I miss breakfast.

WatchingTheWheels85 · 09/06/2019 08:12

It wouldn't be enough for my children. My 6yr old can eat four weetabix.

SnuggyBuggy · 09/06/2019 08:13

Maybe their adverts shout have to show a 30g portion rather than a bowl

maidenover · 09/06/2019 08:13

No it’s not I think they say that size to make the amount of calories seem acceptable.

It’s also not a particularly filling breakfast and due to the amount of sugar not particularly healthy.

PrincessMaryaBolkonskaya · 09/06/2019 08:15

I have half a weetabix at 7 and that lasts me until the next day. On the odd occasion it doesn’t I’d have a quarter of a grape. Never more. There’s SO much sugar in fruit you may as well inject donuts into your eyes than eat a full grape.

BackwardsGoing · 09/06/2019 08:16

Most cereal is just sugar and should be classified as junk food. It's the food manufacturers' greatest triumph to convince people they need special ultra processed crap from a box for a particular meal.

Breakfast is just another meal. Treat it that way. I have whatever I like for breakfast. Often eggs in stock from but also bolognese, chicken or steak.
