To think that 30g (or even 50g) cereal is not enough? (Lighthearted)

Suggested serving size of most cereals is 30g/50g. If I ate that little for breakfast I would be hungry again an hour later.

I normally have 100g! Am I just a pig??

In my day a whole family had to make a weetabix last a day

Teacakeandalatte · 09/06/2019 08:18

Thank God you didnt eat a raisin PrincessMary you might as well just knock your teeth out directly. Don't forget your 27 cups of tea now.

LadySainsburySeal · 09/06/2019 08:19

I weigh cereal and do find that 40g is sufficient however I do drink 99 billion mugs of tea all day right from when I wake up so suspect that fills me up quite a bit! Grin

Coldilox · 09/06/2019 08:20

I have 40g porridge oats made with 150ml milk. It’s usually enough until lunch, if not I’ll have an apple or some yoghurt mid morning.

Much prefer a full English though.

Runbitchrun · 09/06/2019 08:20

One weetabix?! One?!???

I have 3, my 12 year old has 4! And before anyone says anything, we’re both well within normal, healthy BMI. I’ll have at least one snack before lunch after that, too.

EleanorLavish · 09/06/2019 08:22

I always measure my porridge, 30g. I find it filling, but at first I thought it was a pittance,Grin. Getting on top of portion sizes helped me lose 38lbs!
Re:cereal. One of my kids was very ill and hospitalised for quite a while and we saw a private dietician afterwards to help get him back eating etc. She said cereal was packed full of good stuff, minerals, vitamins etc. So in a way it is 'good' for you if you are a bit deficient in stuff or not well. However, she said but the cereal in a bag and squish it up. What happens? It turns to dust. She said it just doesn't give you that full feeling, and keep you going for longer.
Oats etc give you a full feeling for longer and are healthier. Same for eggs etc.

MustardScreams · 09/06/2019 08:23

Bugger cereal, not worth the calories.

Give me eggs and bacon and sausages and black pudding any day.

Lllot5 · 09/06/2019 08:24

Problem is cereal is sugary crap. 30g is a tiny portion because a normal ( like I have ) portion is no good.
Porridge is the way to go. Not those golden syrup ones though.
Or eggs.

WrongKindOfFace · 09/06/2019 08:24

I’ve just looked it up and there are 110 calories in 30g of cornflakes. Even with a splash of milk that’s not enough calories for a decent breakfast. Having a double sized portion is not fuelling the obesity epidemic, although the sugar isn’t ideal.

(I don’t even eat cereal for breakfast.)

PrincessMaryaBolkonskaya · 09/06/2019 08:26

Indeed Snuggy we should truly count our blessings.

Teacake raisins are the devils work. My children are allowed one in their stockings at Christmas but it lasts them for days. I spoil them really I know.

Runbitch I am taking your user name as a direction and going for a run. Have to burn off my breakfast Grin

Reastie · 09/06/2019 08:26

Agree with this, hardly anyone actually has serving size of most things. You might blame portion control but imo it’s a ploy from the manufacturers so you look at the label and think ‘ohh only 200 cals and 5g sugar per bowl’ and mislead yourself to more calories than you thought as you might actually have double that. I remember even as a child one weighed portion being ridiculously stingy. Agree with comments that cereal is a con. They make it look healthy by adding vitamins and minerals but bulk it up with sugar to make it taste nice. Some of them are effectively glorified biscuits with milk. Porridge or egg on brown toast are great breakfast options. Best trick for cereal I find is having a tiny bowl so you can’t overfill it and makes you think mentally you’re getting more if you fill the bowl up

feelingverylazytoday · 09/06/2019 08:27

It probably comes from the olden days when cereal was often just part of breakfast, not the whole meal. If you're having other stuff (a boiled egg with soldiers eg) then a small bowl should be sufficient.

TheCaddy · 09/06/2019 08:30

Someone will say 30g will feed a family of 5. Just like a whole chicken.

munchbunch12 · 09/06/2019 08:32

YANBU OP, I normally have 80g on my workdays or 60g at weekends or like PP, I'm starving 2 hours later. I'm not overweight either, but am quite active.

I measure out 30g of All Bran each morning and eat it along with a mixture of soft fruit, Actimel and dollops of yoghurt. I find it quite filling.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 09/06/2019 08:36

BackwardsGoing you're exactly right!

I was told this also by a doctor. I have hypothyroidism and he told me Cereal is sugar. Best thing for you in tbe morning is Fat and protein. Butter, eggs and a slice of bacon with coffee in the morning is far better than a bowl of cereal. Was proper shocked.

But oats are good too.

ShitAtScarbble · 09/06/2019 08:36

Bugger cereal, not worth the calories

Exactly this - because cereal is 98% crap with added vitamins. Of course they're going to say eat 30g - any more than that and you're poisoning yourself with a sugar overload before the day has even started.
Eat porridge - preferably without a tin of golden syrup on top. Or eat proper food - eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes etc.

goingonabearhunt1 · 09/06/2019 08:41

Most cereals are so sugary you may as well eat cake. Also it's one of the foods with the highest mark-up for what it actually is, total ripoff really. Saying that, I love cereal but I see it as a pudding or a treat, not breakfast.

ChipSandwich · 09/06/2019 08:41

Yes fruit, the most unfilling item there is

Yes, I can never understand "Just have an apple" Fruit only serves to make me more hungry. I think it's the acid.
As for cereal, I've recently started weighing it and agree, the resulting portion is miniscule. On commenting about this to my husband he said "Well you're supposed to have some toast as well"

I'm not sure about that.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/06/2019 08:44

I like granola, but weigh out 30g of it and it doesn’t even cover the bottom of the bowl.

I have two weetabix and that’s plenty , they take ages to eat, but I’m really hungry later. If I have toast I can go longer before I need more food.

JinglingHellsBells · 09/06/2019 08:45

@minttea2

Depends on the type of cereal.

If it's wholegrain like oats made into porridge with semi skimmed milk, that is quite filling.

Keeps me going till lunchtime.

Feeling hungry is something to override. It's not 'normal ' to want to feel full all of the time- that's why people eat portions that are too big , snack and- tah dah- get fat!

Having a bit of a rumbly tummy between meals is fine.

BarbaraofSevillle · 09/06/2019 08:46

Breakfast is just another meal. Treat it that way. I have whatever I like for breakfast. Often eggs in stock from but also bolognese, chicken or steak

^^ This. Cereal is not food. How on earth did people think that eating sugary air is breakfast, or eating little or nothing when you are up and about. I'm hungry in the morning, so that's when I eat the most and the best, most filling food, to set me up for the day.

CaptainMyCaptain · 09/06/2019 08:49

I once looked at the calories on the side of a pot of yoghurt and they were for half a pot! Who eats half a little pot of yoghurt?

KnitterOfSocks · 09/06/2019 08:58

I have porridge, 30g. But I then add 15g of flax seed and 15g of chia seed and 250ml of semi skimmed milk. Comes in about 450 calories and fills me up easily until lunchtime
