To think that 30g (or even 50g) cereal is not enough? (Lighthearted)

Suggested serving size of most cereals is 30g/50g. If I ate that little for breakfast I would be hungry again an hour later.

I normally have 100g! Am I just a pig??

Ha I never eat cereal it’s a waste of time. I can have a fried egg sandwich or avocado on toast for under 250 cals and it fills me up more.

Siameasy · 09/06/2019 14:31

Yes I would be ravenous after that and probably hungrier than I was to start.
I very rarely eat breakfast; I find that if I do eat it it opens the flood gates of hunger so I’m better off without it.
An omelette or something egg based or full fat Greek yogurt would be my choice. Cereal is so pointless

Beautiful3 · 09/06/2019 14:53

I eat weetabix/porridge/shreddies. Probably 80-100 grams. I remember years ago being asked to show the weight watchers group how much cereal I eat. The rep laughed then tipped over half, back in the box! I wouldnt bother eating such a paltry amount. Waste of washing up & I'd rather eat a boiled egg or large slice of water melon.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 09/06/2019 14:57

Of course not. The only reason I have to stick to 40g is that I'm menopausal and it's hard work keeping my weight in check at the mo. I'll happily eat 100g when, and if, my body gets more forgiving.

Enjoy your cereal Smile

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 09/06/2019 15:25

The recommended portion sizes are ridiculous, here is a “serving” of shreddies compared to what I think an average person without reading the box, would put in their bowl, basically treble the calories! And that’s not including milk. I think it’s incredibly misleading saying that 30gms is a portion size, I’m pretty sure the average person does not weigh their cereal and would assume a portion size is an actual bowl of cereal, not a few bits covering the bottom.

I do. I simply have to in order to maintain a healthy body weight Blush

Jeezoh · 09/06/2019 15:34

50g for granola with yoghurt instead of milk), plus a banana, keeps me full til late morning. 50g of other cereals, like cornflakes, has me hungry again by 9am. So for me, it depends on the cereal.

Comefromaway · 09/06/2019 15:41

I weigh ds’s out because left to him he will only have a tiny handful as he doesn’t like eating breakfast. Then end up wanting sweets later.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 09/06/2019 15:42

The public as a whole I was saying Nicelegs not people on a diet or who are watching their weight, I weigh absolutely everything it’s the only way I can maintain my weight, that’s why it’s so misleading, people think a bowl of cereal is about 150 calories, many won’t realise what a serving actually is, it lulls them into a false sense of security.

MarshaBradyo · 09/06/2019 15:45

It’s just to keep the bad stuff lower I reckon

SouthernComforts · 09/06/2019 16:01

I just don't eat breakfast which solves the calorie problem. My normal workday is 180 calories coffee, 400 cal lunch, 500 cal tea, 200 cal evening snack. If I ate breakfast instead of an evening snack I'd be starving before bed, I'd rather be hungry before lunch.

hopefulhalf · 09/06/2019 16:05

Yup Southern comfort I have a banana at my desk at 8:30 On work days or overnight oats (1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup berries, 1/2 cup yogurt, splash of milk - that will last me three days)so yes probrably about 30-40g oats.

Hmmmbop · 09/06/2019 16:17

I weighed my cereal for a bit, to see what a 'normal' portion was for me - 60-80g depending on the cereal (about double the recommended amount.

I'm currently weighing cereal to lose my baby weight and slowly getting used to the smaller portion. I need something quick and non-cook for breakfast so can't have eggs etc.

wiltingflower · 09/06/2019 16:20

I love cereal but the recommended portion sizes for it are too small to fill me up! I've stopped eating cereal because of this and how unhealthy it is.

I've found the Smart Recipies app has really helped me to understand how much you're supposed to eat for each meal.

LaurieFairyCake · 09/06/2019 16:29

Life is pain

Laughed my tits off at that Grin

The optimum portion size for most things is your palm

This is why my ass is so big - fucking SMALL HANDS

pigsDOfly · 09/06/2019 16:30

I have 30gms of porridge, that's without the milk, and that fills me up until lunch time. I'm slim and probably don't eat a great deal generally compared to a lot of people.

30gms of cereal wouldn't begin to stop the hunger though. It's completely unrealistic. Apart from anything else most cereals are rubbish, you might just as well eat the box.

As pps have said, 30gms is used as a serving size in order to make it seem less calorific than it actually would be if they used a serving size that actually satisfied the average persons needs.

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 09/06/2019 16:43

I did once weigh out a 30g portion of cereal and then realised why I was overweight and why I'd likely stay overweight as it's bloody tiny

lisasimpsonssaxophone · 09/06/2019 16:44

Oh I bloody LOVE cocoa pops. I buy them about once every two or three years (usually on holiday) and I can pretty much eat half a box in one go. Definitely not something anyone should be having every morning but soooo good. 30g though? Don’t make me laugh Grin

The portion sizes on packaging annoy me so much. I think the worst one I saw was a 45g bag of hula hoops which had nutritional info for a 30g ‘serving’. Who the fuck is buying a bag of crisps and only eating two thirds? What are we meant to do with the remaining 15g?!

I’ve also been caught out by the labels under the sandwiches on the Pret shelves which give calories for 100g... I thought a sandwich was 250 calories and it was actually more like 450. Why would anyone need the info for 100g of sandwich? Who is buying their sandwich in Pret and then weighing it?!

CreakingKnees · 09/06/2019 16:55

I don't measure or weigh my cereal. I just tip it into a large cereal bowl, pour full fat milk on, and depending on the cereal type, throw a couple of tablespoons of sugar on it, then eat it.

Loveislandaddict · 09/06/2019 21:09

I’d love to do eggs etc for breakfast but it takes too much time. With cereal, pour on milk, and voila, food is ready (or add microwave for porridge).

Ontheboardwalk · 09/06/2019 21:25

I’ve just had two weetabix on the back of this thread

I’ve no idea how many grams but they were tasty. I couldn’t survive on just one weetabix

Waveysnail · 09/06/2019 21:26

Porridge - only way that amount fills u up

HillRunner · 09/06/2019 21:30

if 30g is not what most people would find filling for breakfast should manufacturers be allowed to use this as their suggested portion? Giving a false view of how healthy the cereal is.

I agree with this. Most people would consider 30g a meagre portion. If cereal manufacturers stated the calories in a more realistic portion, people would realise how sugar-loaded and unhealthy their product is.

HillRunner · 09/06/2019 21:35

40g of oats will actually fill me up reasonably, but 40g of most cereals wouldn't touch the sides - I'd be starving in an hour or so.

crazyasafox · 09/06/2019 21:37

It's not much really. 30gms that is.

50 is OK for me. DH needs about 65-70.

I do have a yogurt and some fruit too.
