To insist DS has closed toe sandals this year?

He's 9. And will not go sockless. He refuses to go anywhere without socks on unless it's the swimming pool. I have managed to persuade him to wear the short trainer style socks when he is wearing shorts. AIBU to suggest I get him some closed toe sandals this year so it's not so obvious he's wearing socks?

He's 9 years old. He wears what he's told to wear.

Marvinmarvinson · 06/06/2019 08:09

Can he not just wear trainers?

00100001 · 06/06/2019 08:10

Why can't he wear socks with sandals?

eosmum · 06/06/2019 08:10

Socks and sliders are a fashion statement now.

arethereanyleftatall · 06/06/2019 08:12

Firstly I don't get what the issue is for a 9 year old to wear socks with sandals, can you say what the problem is?
Secondly, as the first poster says, a 9 year old wears whatever you buy him to wear.

Fairylea · 06/06/2019 08:13

Socks and sandals for a 9 year old is absolutely fine! Sliders and socks are ultra trendy even for adults now.

LoafofSellotape · 06/06/2019 08:14

No kid who knows what's what would be seen dead without a pair of white socks pulled up to their mid calves.

Cracks me up but that's what's in at the moment.

He's 9, he's old enough to wear what he wants. I think D's stopped wearing sandals at about 8. As a pp said white socks and sliders are in!

AfterSchoolWorry · 06/06/2019 08:16

Really? My dd has been picking her own clothes since 3/4 years old!

You can't tell a child what to wear!

Kaykay06 · 06/06/2019 08:16

Last time my 9 year old wore sandals he was tiny couldn’t get him in them now. Light breathable shoes/trainers maybe?

I have opposite prob with my 8 year old he hates socks and no way would I allow them to be wandering about in open or closed toe Sandals with socks on

NoTheyAreNotTeenagers · 06/06/2019 08:16

It looks ridiculous he looks like a 90 year old English tourist
Plus he always wears odd socks.
Plus I don't want him to be laughed at and I've never seen any of the other kids wearing socks and sandals.

This is the ultimate “in” thing according to my teen...

To insist DS has closed toe sandals this year?
Fairylea · 06/06/2019 08:17

My pic hasn’t posted yet. Oops.

00100001 · 06/06/2019 08:18

"You can't tell a child what to wear!"

Pretty sure you can... I'm going to go ahead and say your child has to wear school uniform. And I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you insist she wears a helmet when riding her bike. And that she's not allowed to wear wellies to bed...

00100001 · 06/06/2019 08:19

Who's going to laugh at him? Confused

NoTheyAreNotTeenagers · 06/06/2019 08:19

I was beginning to worry AfterSchoolWorry as I've also been letting mine pick their clothes since about 3/4!

I'm not getting this trend for socks and sliders either. Then again I'm too old!

Princesspickle777 · 06/06/2019 08:19

As said above socks and sliders are very in at the minute, even though they do look ridiculous Grin. How about a pair of converse or Vans? Or any other light style of shoe. They’ll look better with socks and probably a bit more stylish for him.

NoTheyAreNotTeenagers · 06/06/2019 08:25

Shock clearly I am behind the times 😂😂 but no, socks and sandals still looks ridiculous.

The other kids at school 00100001 Of course I make them wear a bike helmet, but that's safety equipment and not clothing so doesn't count. And shoes aren't allowed inside, so wellies in bed has never been an issue. I only insist that clothing has to be appropriate for the weather, the rest of the time they wear what they choose.

Why?

Kanga83 · 06/06/2019 08:28

He's 8, surely just let him wear what's comfortable for him? I've never got this whole sock sandal hatred thing personally. If someone wants to wear it fine, if they don't again fine.

Alicatz66 · 06/06/2019 08:28

You could let him wear them ... if the kids laugh at him he may stop and follow the crowd .... or he may think screw you lot and walk proudly by in his socks 🧦

Shouldbedoing · 06/06/2019 08:29

But socks and sandals are the logical safety choice - no friction or rubbing, absorbs sweat, grit and sand in the shoe no problem. Bare feet is a modern fashion construct.
(I wish I could wear socks with my sandals but I do have some standards😘)

LemonTT · 06/06/2019 08:30

Yup it is in at the moment

LoafofSellotape · 06/06/2019 08:30

Dh and I have to really stop ourselves laughing at ds who sports socks and sliders just like the pic above, it looks so ridiculous but I'm sure lots of the 80's fashion did too to our parents so we keep quiet.

I did tell ds the only people who wore sliders when I was young were older men by the pool but he refused to believe me Grin

LoafofSellotape · 06/06/2019 08:31

if the kids laugh at him he may stop and follow the crowd

No kid will laugh at him though, that's why he wants to wear them!
