To insist DS has closed toe sandals this year?

He's 9. And will not go sockless. He refuses to go anywhere without socks on unless it's the swimming pool. I have managed to persuade him to wear the short trainer style socks when he is wearing shorts. AIBU to suggest I get him some closed toe sandals this year so it's not so obvious he's wearing socks?

DD had a pair like these which she wore with or without trainer socks.

Cheeseandwin5 · 06/06/2019 11:35

I would say there are two issues here.
If its a matter of safety or hygiene or a requirement for attendance then off course you need to set the rules about dresswear, but if its just because, in your view, it looks ridiculous than I suggest you take a step back a bit. He is hopefully growing into an independent man and if he makes some misjudgements along the way, they are all part of growing up. Who here hasnt got a picture of themselves in clothes they wouldnt be seen dead in now.

fruitpastille · 06/06/2019 11:38

What about some crocs?

LIVIA999 · 06/06/2019 11:45

My DS who is 11 LOVES socks with sandals to much hilarity from us. He says he liked that they feel tight. Obviously we know they look terrible but as a PP said they are in fashion again as DSD 22 wears them even though she mocked her little brother a few years ago.
I think you ABU not to let him.

bluebeck · 06/06/2019 11:59

Are they really allowed to wear sandals to school? My DC weren't.

Let him wear what he likes. Odd socks has been a fashion statement for boys for quite a while now. Sliders and socks also very fashionable.

Just let him be. I don't know why it is so important to you. It's clear that your DS will have a far better idea of what might make his peers laugh at him than you do.....

Looneytune253 · 06/06/2019 12:15

Children can easily get away with socks and sandals. In fact I wish my 8 year old would still wear them cos she looks cute

notso · 06/06/2019 12:29

I wouldn't put mine in sandals for school, socks or no socks, closed or open toe.
They play on the field and would get manky feet. Some of the girls wear them with white socks which are black by the end of the day.
They are on the list of banned footwear secondary.

44HuntJas · 06/06/2019 12:32

Socks with sliders are a thing now.

Please don't be one of those parents (like my aunt) who stifles any kind of individuality by laying out her children's clothes on the bed for them, to make sure they look neat and tidy and what she wants, because God forbid they want to wear something she doesn't like.

NoTheyAreNotTeenagers · 06/06/2019 12:38

who stifles any kind of individuality by laying out her children's clothes on the bed for them, to make sure they look neat and tidy 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 honestly, this is sooo far the other end of what I do with my DC's clothes choice. and I'm not sure they've ever been described as neat, tidy or put together socks in sandals is the only thing that bothers me.

They are allowed sandals to school. The only footwear requirement is the have indoor gym shoes (which stay at school) and trainers for sport outdoors. If child wears trainers to school as everyday footwear, they can use these. However, every year we get at least one reminder not to send your child to school on a day when they have sport wearing flip flops!

Thank God! Tbh that was more a moan about my aunt than anything. Grin

DP wears socks and sliders. I was horrified the first time until he showed me that people Do It now.

NoTheyAreNotTeenagers · 06/06/2019 12:48

Grin I was the mum holding up clothes to my 18month old in his buggy so he could choose what to buy... as I was so adamant my DC would get to choose what they wore. Although last time I asked DS to come and choose some t-shirts he said "no, just get me one with a dinosaur on it!" 🙄

Ah he's a good lad OP, I'm exactly the same with socks!

I'd just let him, I've worn socks and sliders for years- before it was 'cool' Grin

Aprillygirl · 06/06/2019 14:26

Comes to something when a 9yr old is trendier than his mother. Get with it OP dontcha know everyone is wearing socks with their sandals this season! Shock Wink

APipkinOfPepper · 06/06/2019 14:38

Both of mine like to start wearing sandals as early in the year as possible - think it makes them feel summery! The older one frequently wears odd socks and closed toe sandals - we usually get them from Mountain Warehouse. However, they can’t wear sandals to school - I can see that might make a difference in the potential for being teased about it, but do 9 year old boys really care about that sort of thing? However, closed toe are more practical for running around/football etc while still being cool, hence preferred option for ours.

SpamChaudFroid · 06/06/2019 14:43

That's how all the young people like to wear them OP. Don't force him to dress how you want - it's not as if he's asking for a face tattoo.

WaitingForMyFabric · 06/06/2019 16:24

I think if people want to wear socks with sandals, let them, I’m sick of this ridiculous policing of foot wear.

Years ago I would happily have worn ankle boots with skirts, but I know it wasn’t the thing...it darn well is acceptable now.

Who cares? let him have comfortable sock and sandal feet, and tell anyone who objects, to get stuffed

Loftyswops988 · 06/06/2019 18:51

I wear Saltwater sandals - the Shark closed toe ones, with socks!! The only people who've ever laughed at me for it were my own parents Grin

StreetwiseHercules · 06/06/2019 19:02

Just don’t buy him sandals. They are awful.

CassianAndor · 06/06/2019 19:04

Errrr, what? All sandals are awful? All of them? No sense to sandals at all?

StreetwiseHercules · 06/06/2019 19:06

Correct.

Applesbananaspears · 06/06/2019 19:09

fairylea mine too and have you ever seen anything much more ridiculous?

CassianAndor · 06/06/2019 19:10

What a stupid comment.

Rainbowknickers · 06/06/2019 19:38

My dad once told me (when mine where small) to pick my battles
Did it really matter if they wore socks and sandals together?
No
But did manners matter?
Yes
I’d let him crack on with it-it’s trendy and if he’s happy then just let it go or your whole life will be a battle of wills and nobody will be happy

AuntMarch · 06/06/2019 19:57

I don't go sockless unless wearing slippers.
(I just don't wear sandals)

But kids don't get to have control over much, why can't they choose what to wear outside of school and safety restrictions (e.g. not long strings of beads when playing on climbing frames etc)?

Gth1234 · 06/06/2019 21:48

nothing wrong with wearing socks.

Sandals are uncomfortable without. I wear socks and trainers.
