Hello everyone, here's thread 2.

I'd be very grateful if someone could do a clicky link to the last one. Still can't figure it out.

Thanks!

Yes Magic, you did. Very subtly done. Phew.

MagicKingdomDizzy

True that 😆

These threads are interesting

Nicky wasn't viewed as a good Tsar, I think. He wasn't popular and Europe was in a revolutionary mood. UK saw lots of people arrive fleeing Jewish pogroms, so people weren't blind to that or to rising left wing mood.

He was however, supposed to be a nice man, certainly a devoted husband* and father. His education apparently hadn't well equipped him to be a Tsar and he was small minded and ruled by his wife- who was definitely unpopular. Nicky shut himself off and withdrew from his nation and the governance of it.

*His and Alexandra's letters where they call their naughty bits boysie and lady (think I remenbered that right) are a bit creepy though.

I am blown away by your knowledge on the royals! You either have several browsers open at once, a photographic memory or a degree in royal history Shock

Lol Magic the boring serious bloke is David Starkey, royal historian but perhaps I was being mean to our lovely posters, I shall change my mind set and imagine you all look like this lovely lady instead.

Neither. I have an obsessive child whose obsession for 5 (very long) years was royalty.

It was never ending.

MissParple · 29/04/2019 23:03

Ooooh, I know about Prince William of Gloucester. The only handsome British royal there's ever been.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/04/2019 23:03

Take a bow for the new thread, Magic Wink

Wasn't it you who mentioned Sophie supposedly being a favourite of the Queen on the last thread? I admit to being a bit surprised if so, considering some of the comments she made to the "fake sheikh"

Or maybe HM's just grateful since she's the only one who managed to stay married to one of her offspring!!

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 29/04/2019 23:04

@MyBlueMoonBeam - Grin.

I promise I'm not David Starkey!

A really good book to read about the run up & the ins & outs of The First World War is 'Europe's Last Summer: Why the World Went to War in 1914' by David Fromkin.
It is extremely insightful & in-depth.

The British Foreign Secretary in 1914 was Edward Grey & he wrote in his memoirs that on the eve of The First World War he remarked to a friend 'The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our life-time",

I find that haunting.

Megan is great and amazing (!!!!) but I have to wonder who is advising her. Spending 500k on a maternity wardrobe seems very careless given her position. These are clothes which will be worn for literally just a few months, and that’s an extravagant amount by any standard, but especially now when every day the papers have stories about more and more people in the U.K. having to access food banks etc. It’s just incredibly tone deaf and someone should have guided her against it.

Kate has always worn a lot of high street, especially in the early days of the marriage and this has been a calculated and wise move. I do wonder if it’s a culture clash of sorts, as Megan comes from the Hollywood scene where lavish displays of wealth are fine and even encouraged. But it requires more sensitivity as a highly visible member of the royal family. I have to wonder if she really understands what she has married into. Just because the money is there and Charles is happy to write you a cheque it doesn’t mean you can just spend it without care.

Kate and William learned that with those costly renovations which were itemised in the tabloids. It didn’t reflect badly on kate because it was spending as a couple, but the maternity wardrobe is all Megan. It really opens her up to criticism and her team should have given her better advice.

I think James Middleton resembles George V and Nicholas II in Haworthias photo.

I remember that plane crash - as it was near where I was living at the time. The previous Prince William who was also a pilot. However, I've never heard any conspiracy theories and I was a bit young to hear tbh. His mother had gone to my school and she still popped along for the odd big occasion so it was of interest. His brother was a qualified architect when he was a younger son of a younger son and didn't have to be DoG, so must have had some brains.

To talk about quasi-royals 😉 Rosemary Kennedy was able to be presented at court and 'do the season's with her sisters when Joseph Kennedy was Ambassador. Apparently he was persuaded that a lobotomy would solve all her problems and had it done without his wife knowing; its said that Rose never forgave him. It was covered in a biography I read of Kathleen Kennedy who was disowned because she became an Anglican to marry the heir to the Duke of Devonshire; he was killed in WW2 and the title went to his brother, the husband of Deborah Mitford.

They're all bloody connected, aren't they?!

MissParple · 29/04/2019 23:08

God, I hope not. I'd have to smack you with a rotting haddock otherwise. He's an angry misogynist gnome.

Nicky wasn't viewed as a good Tsar, I think. He wasn't popular and Europe was in a revolutionary mood.

I vaguely remember a story about him reading a telegram about a massacre (in St Petersburg possibly), shoving it in his pocket and going back to playing Tennis.

He was definitely not a good Tsar. Just another example of why a country shouldn't be run by someone simply because they were born.

@Puzzledandpissedoff - I read a big article about Sophie a few years ago. She changed tack significantly and ate the royal equivalent of humble pie after those blunders. Head down, worked on her relationship with the Queen and got on with it. It worked.

I should think not with that username 😅
