Hello everyone, here's thread 2.

I'd be very grateful if someone could do a clicky link to the last one. Still can't figure it out.

Thanks!

Queen Mary made sure John wasn't lonely by having local children brought in to be playmates for him. He had quite a few friends from the village.
That's the kind of thing any Mum would do, arrange play dates or make sure their children have friends.

It was Queen Alexandra who told her that Johnnie was lonely, a granny looking out for him. I thought that what she said to Queen Mary about 'our two Johnnies' lying side by side was heartbreaking; Prince John was buried beside his uncle, Prince Alexander John, also the youngest child, who died at one day old. So he wasn't hidden away by not being buried at Frogmore; he was buried with family, and both the Queens lost their youngest child too early.

That's heartbreaking TooManyPaws

I’ve read that Prince John had a very happy life and actually his siblings were brutalised by their nanny

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 29/04/2019 21:58

@TunstallTansy I did not know about that thread! It's one of the most annoying thing about the females on MIC. That, and what they look like, how they behave and everything they do.

Millie Mackintosh, who was an early MIC cast member and is apparently big pals with a certain pregnant American person, speaks just like that.

I saw that on the news too. I think it was yesterday whilst PW was in New Zealand.

The context of it was that he didn't have his phone on him at the time, rather than because he's not talking to Harry!

Checking in.

Ah I see, i’ll Search for it now for a nosy!

That's a really useful insight, and makes alot of sense.

Just catching up on other thread...

Hang on, Russia and GB were not at war with each other in WW1! They were allies, on the same side.

So the cousins George V and Nicholas II were not at war. But they were at war with their other cousin, Kaiser Wilhelm III of Germany.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 29/04/2019 22:18

Hi again all - is this thread going to be as electic as the last 3 (she asks hopefully) Grin
I still haven't quite recovered from the 🥗 tbh though 🙈
Poor Kate with her mouth full of plums has been having a rough time of it I see 😅

Not sure anyone said they were?

Just apropos of nothing. My DH is scrolling through Facebook and a story came up about Laurence Lwellynn Bowen slating Meghan’s dress sense. It came up on his feed because for some reason several extremely macho construction worker friends of his have waded into the comments to defend Meghan’s honour against LBB despite none of them having any knowledge about fashion.

I don’t know why but that rather tickled me.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 29/04/2019 22:24

I guess we'll see. It's been sort of an organic progression so far, you never know where we'll end up, which is part of the fun.

Against the Mumsnet rules I know, but derailing is actively encouraged Grin

Thanks for not pointing out I put way too much thought into it!!

I just think it makes sense. Especially when you consider the Duke of Kent was 7 when he became Duke. It makes sense massively that the Duke, Princess Alexandra and Prince Michael were a bit spoiled after losing their father so young (Prince Michael was only a few weeks).

And the current Duke of Gloucester should just have been the younger son, but his brother died at 30 in a plane crash. So his life changed again as well

In reality the only child of George and Mary not to be affected by the abdication was Princess Mary as she was already married and settled. The rest of them have all be touched by change or tragedy really.

I cannot believe that I’ve turned my back for 5 minutes and we are on another thread already!!! Great stuff! marking my place for juicy royal gossip past and present! Thanks Magic

If I were Meghan I’d be delighted by that. More worrying if he was praising you I’d reckon!

I’m loving the idea of , roofers and builders wading in in Meghans defence!

Iamnotagoddess · 29/04/2019 22:28

Hi - can the really serious people not join this one Grin

I love attention to detail!

That unique situation really shows how important the 'heir and spare' is.

Given that Mary endured George's stamp collection, insistence on a tiny house and middle class furniture and him getting his parrot out at the table, I reckon she wasn't exactly trembling in her boots at a bit of Mockney

Again- Mary was tough, she rode out King George insisting on "Daisy daisy” being played at their wedding

I’m dying at this! Especially because when I think of George V, I think of this dashing photo with Tsar Nicky. I can’t quite square it with stamp collections and “Daisy Daisy” Grin

Also Alexandra was veeeeery slow to give up the best bits of Buck House upon becoming Dowager Queen

I’m not surprised, she was so beautiful in her prime and old Edward didn’t give her many years on the throne, did he? I’m going to have to look up photos of her as a grandmother now, because I don’t think I’ve seen any.

To find the royal family fascinating part 2
PierreBezukov · 29/04/2019 22:32

Someone did say that about the Tsar and the King but I'm not sure if it went uncorrected.

By the way (has this been discussed) - my news feed had TWO non-stories about Kate and William's relationship today, plus another story about the queen's speech with a pic of the Queen beside Marquis of Chumley??

The press are pushing this adultery story big-time!!

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 29/04/2019 22:33

That's fascinating, Nigella!

Prince John wasn't hidden away out of shame. Concerns about what was best for him, social norms of the time and the unique position of the family saw him drop out of public life, but he seems to have been very loved and his best interests considered. Living a routine, stable and private life with the deeply devoted Nanny Lala and with caring friends and family nearby shielded him rather than hid him so to speak. It was a precarious time for the monarchy with revolution in Europe, so whilst cloaking him hid a "weakness" in their image, Johnnie could have been cruelly used by their opponents in a way no parent would want.

He appeared as a "family member" often until he was 11, although no official photos were released of him after 1913. He was not removed from the Succession either. WW1 also dominated the press for the last few years of his life, so it was very easy for him to drop out of view with that going on, too, since it dominated the press. He died at 13, so how they would have coped with John the man is unknown (announced he was sickly and stayed tight lipped, I think) but his death was announced as being from epilepsy, so they evidently weren't ashamed, but were protective.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 29/04/2019 22:33

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo You're welcome!

Iamnotagoddess Maybe we need a few mentions of salad and Gazzas crotch to lower the tone a bit?
This thread is decidedly more highbrow than the last Grin

Who was daisy daisy?

Buddywoo · 29/04/2019 22:33

Prince Michael and \princess Michael were hogging the outside lane of a dual carriageway near Gloucester, doing about 45 mph. They wouldn't shift so we eventually undertook. She gave us the finger.
