Hello everyone, here's thread 2.

I'd be very grateful if someone could do a clicky link to the last one. Still can't figure it out.

Thanks!

That swoon was for William of Gloucester not David Starkey btw 😆

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 29/04/2019 23:13

As much as I feel more republican than royalist I do find our Royal Family past and present utterly fascinating, if we had a Brexit style vote on the Royal Family tomorrow I don’t know if I could actually put an X by the ‘orf with their heads’ box as much as my head would be telling me to do so, if push really came to shove, and there was a vote when the Queen dies whether to carry on with the Royal Family with Charles as the next Monarch or not, how does everyone think the public would vote?

BishopBrennansArse · 29/04/2019 23:14

Ooh found you all again

lyralalala · 29/04/2019 23:15

Sophie and her Maj apparently share a love of military history.

Also I think their closeness really stepped up after Louise’s birth and how close a call that was for mother and baby.

MissParple · 29/04/2019 23:15

The British public would definitely vote to keep the royals. Definitely.

I wouldn't.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 29/04/2019 23:16

Puzzledandpissedoff

Takes a bow. Yes that was me, I read a few stories about how much the Queen likes her. DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops is correct, she has worked very hard after that whole Sheikh business to make it up to Her Maj and 'not let down the side again'.

Apparently they are both very interested in military history. Can't remember where I heard that though.

Republican myself in exile (Ireland) 😉

I think the vote to keep the Monarchy would be unanimous.

Have you watched The Windsors? There is an episode about this very topic - so funny 😂

MissParple · 29/04/2019 23:16

@MyBlueMoonbeam, I've seen threads on MN with people lusting for Jacob Rees Mogg, so nothing would surprise me! Grin

MoreProseccoNow · 29/04/2019 23:17

I hope there will be a baby Sussex by the end of this thread!

Andylion · 29/04/2019 23:18

I am really enjoying this thread.

And the current Duke of Gloucester should just have been the younger son, but his brother died at 30 in a plane crash. So his life changed again as well

This set me off to google the brother who died, Prince William of Gloucester. Wowza. Another pic came up, which says it is PW of G with the Queen, when she was still a Princess. it looks an awful like Charles. I think it must be mislabeled.

I think given that older people are more likely to vote the monarchy would be safe for a vote.

Especially just now when the 'keep them' camp could point to the Trumps as the potential alternative situation.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 29/04/2019 23:19

lyralalala

Neither. I have an obsessive child whose obsession for 5 (very long) years was royalty

I'm envious! I'd give anything to discuss royal history with my son instead of bloody minecraft!

@MissParple the mind boggles 😵

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 29/04/2019 23:21

Edward VII's eldest son Prince Albert Victor Duke of Clarence & Avondale was very handsome. He was engaged to Princess Victoria Mary of Teck known as Princess May (later Queen Mary.)
Unfortunately Prince Albert Victor died six weeks after their engagement & the following year she was engaged to his brother George who became King George V.
I can't quite get my head around that, getting engaged to your Fiancé's brother after said Fiancé has died.

MissParple · 29/04/2019 23:22

Didn't Catherine of Aragon do that too?

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 29/04/2019 23:23

Yes she did.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 29/04/2019 23:24

@TracyBeakerSoYeah - the "keep it in the family" thing was quite common amongst Royals & Nobility of yore I think

MissParple · 29/04/2019 23:25

That guy's eyes are a bit creepy. Those fishy eyes ran in the family.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 29/04/2019 23:26

But I think a vote to keep would have to be with some caveats, as Paper has outlined in their post I don’t know if the sheer extravagance as it is now would be tolerated, particularly for the lesser royals, I mean is it justified that Prince Edwards house is this stately? Not sure how it’s funded so I could be speaking out of turn, though I’m sure he’s not mortgaged up to the hilt with it.

Kathleen Kennedy appears as "Kick" in the Mitford sisters letters. They are v nice about her (the QM is "Cake", arf). Jackie O & her sister fascinate me but I'm not too good on the Kennedys proper. They're US royalty equivalent though. Jackie is my style crush. The Bouvier sisters also had a mum who made Carole Middleton look like amateur hr.

Currently imagining Liz & Sophs sat down to rewatch Zulu after a nice game of risk and swapping model soldiers.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 29/04/2019 23:27

TracyBeakerSoYeah

I can't quite get my head around that, getting engaged to your Fiancé's brother after said Fiancé has died.

I think this was more common than we think.

It happened with Henry VIII after his brother Arthur died. Katherine of Aragon married him despite already being married to Arthur but not consummating the marriage (after 5 months? Yeah right).

I think it could be to do with the dowrys which were already arranged and paid and the politics of sorting out another match, so it was just easier to marry the widow to the brother instead.

Yep- Catherine of Aragon was originally mrs Arthur til he died. Then she became mrs Henry.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 29/04/2019 23:29

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops

Ooo I love those Mitfords

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 29/04/2019 23:30

Yes I have Bluemoonbeam don’t remember that episode though, will seek it out! Love Princess Anne in it she is utterly terrifying! I wonder if any of them have watched it? Surely they could not resist, I imagine Kate and Camilla would find it hysterical, William and Charles not so much.....

MyBlueMoonbeam · 29/04/2019 23:30

Now if Henry viii had really looked like Jonathan Rhys Meyers I would have for sure 😅
