To think being slim should be normal for most people.

By slim i mean sizes 8 to 12.

Obviously you get a minority who are not in this range naturally but for 80% of people this size should be natural, say they eat a reasonable diet of between 2000-3000 calories.

Im so sick of people at work making out i am abnormally thin for being a size 10. I watch what I eat but dont deprive myself. The same people making me out to be lucky to be slim eat fried chicken or pizza for lunch and seem to be able to demolish a whole pack of biscuits at 3 o clock.

Aibu to think that the normal human man/woman should be a size 8-12 and that to attain or maintain this does not require super human discipline or strength.

Uh huh

NoahsArks · 03/03/2019 18:04

I am clinically obese at size 12. If I ate 2000kcals a day I would be twice the size I am.

Starch · 03/03/2019 18:04

It’s like not being a dick splash should be the norm for most people, yet so many seem to struggle with it.

SauvignonBlanche · 03/03/2019 18:05

9/10 on the GFery scale.

SileneOliveira · 03/03/2019 18:05

Gosh, aren't you just AMAZING, you lovely, slim size 10 person you! Up there on your pedestal, sneering down at the nasty, silly, undisciplined fatties who are just inferior to you wonderfulness.

Hmm

Really glad I don't work in your office, you'd be getting that packet of biscuits shoved where the sun doesn't shine. (And before you start sneering that I'm obviously a size 760, I'm a 14.)

I think it should be normal to not concern yourself with the size and food intake of those around you.

Prequelle · 03/03/2019 18:06

You'll get flamed but I get what you're saying. We as a society have lost sight of what the optimal weight is because being overweight is now the 'average'. I see people labelling slim women as 'anorexic' because they can see a collar bone. It's very odd, sad and dangerous.

HermioneWeasley · 03/03/2019 18:07

I think the more pertinent question is given our toxic food environment and how we haven’t had time to adapt, why isn’t everyone morbidly obese?

SarahAndQuack · 03/03/2019 18:07

I find it hard to believe you don't know sizes aren't standardized.

If I wanted to make myself feel delighted about my thinness (I don't), I could go out and buy size 10 clothes. Somewhere will stock them. And it won't change the fact I am a bit overweight and don't eat terribly healthily.

A size 10 isn't a meaningful thing. I have clothes with labels ranging from size 8 to size 16 - that's how little they're standardised.

However, I digress. I agree with others you sound as if you're terribly pleased to be slim and want other people to feel bad for being fatter. Maybe try knitting instead?

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking · 03/03/2019 18:07

You can be thin as stick, with poor diet and still have chronic heart disease. Incidentally - you wait till you have a couple of kids and hit middle age, your size 10 smugness will be a far and distant memory

Alison100199 · 03/03/2019 18:08

I agree. It should be the norm and overweight should be the exception. Unless someone is very tall, a 14/16 usually means they are packing a few extra pounds. Unfortunately, it's now the other way round with two thirds of adults obese or overweight. But you won't get much support for your view on MN OP.

DishingOutDone · 03/03/2019 18:08

2,000-3,000 calories per day most people would put on weight unless they are athletes or doing strenuous work. But not you of course Devilish. You're special Hmm

Exaxtly what i'm trying to say. Sizes 8-12 should be normal not 'slim'.

You are actually an evolutionary oddity and
would probably have died off in a hunter gather society so please don't be too smug

Bubblegumgal · 03/03/2019 18:09

At 2000-3000 kcal per day most women would be overweight/ obese category. My bmr is only 1300 kcal I’m 5’3

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 03/03/2019 18:10

Oh, this'll go well...

Same as Noah’sArk, I’m “Very Overweight” at a size 12 and gain weight eating just 1400 calories. This is due to an adrenal disorder and hypothyroidism (caused by the adrenal disorder). Being a size 10 and eating 2000 calories a day just isn’t possible for some people. We all have different metabolisms. Why would you bother what clothes size other people wear? I agree at a size 10, I get comments about being skinny and slim (when actually it’s just a normal acceptable weight), at size 8 people start asking if I have an eating disorder but I don’t care and I’m not particularly interested or bothered what sizes other people wear or what they weigh.

I kinda agree with you. I'm a size 12 with BMI of 25 so classes as overweight. When I talk about diets I always get people saying I don't need to lose weight as I'm skinny enough (I'm really not skinny) .. also eat 2000-3000 calories per day (I have a physical job).

Bubba1234 · 03/03/2019 18:11

Not in these times no.
I’m slim always was and always will be because of my genes.
But I can see the factors of how people are bigger than what they should be naturally.
So much food choice today,.too much in my opinion.
Supermarkets opening early and late.
Lifestyle is more sedantary through work and screen time.
Longer working hours mean people have less time for active hobbies and home cooked meals.
Cheap takeaways foods, meal
Deals , 3 for 2s all the marketing ploys contribute hugely.
Years ago you only got something sweet on a Sunday.
Now it’s almost everyday.
All those hidden preservatives lurking in food marketed as ‘healthy’
In supermarkets.
Lack of education on food.
Poverty.

LiveLongAndBright · 03/03/2019 18:12

I am 5.5 and a size 8/10 so in the range of your “normal”. Never have I ever had people make out that I am abnormally thin. I think you are making a mountain out of a molehill and you show what a judgy mcjudge pants you are with your scoffing pizza and fried chicken/packets of biscuits comment.

origamiunicorn · 03/03/2019 18:12

By slim i mean sizes 8 to 12.

Is this purposely being goady? If not, I'd like to educate you that you can be bigger than a 12 and still be slim and you can be a size 12 and be slightly overweight depending on whether you are 5ft nothing or 6ft.

Also OP just because you're a slim size 10 doesn't mean you're healthy or fit.

and that to attain or maintain this does not require super human discipline or strength

To quote a PP, nah, fuck off.
I am not even going to signify this with a response.

DevilishDebbie · 03/03/2019 18:12

No i dont care, I just dont want what really are average standard sizes to be considered abnormal. I should not be considered skinny but normal. It shows how bad things have got in terms of the obesity crisis.
