Not allowed to cut up pizza in Wetherspoons?

We were in Wetherspoons at the weekend having a cheap and cheerful lunch and my DN had a pizza.
We asked them if they could cut up her pizza for her because the last time it wasn’t and the waitress told us they weren’t allowed to anymore and don’t even have pizza cutters in the kitchen. We laughed as we assumed it was a joke but no when the pizza arrived it wasn’t cut up and the waitress said again that for health and safety reasons they weren’t allowed to use a pizza cutter, we asked if they could have used a knife and she said no. We were a bit
Then she came over with a very sharp steak knife and said we could cut it up ourselves with that if we wanted.

Is this a nationwide rule or is our local Wetherspoons a bit odd?

Also isn’t the owner of Wetherspoons desperate to get us out of the EU because of silly little rules like this?

Can you not cut your own pizza up? It wouldn't have even crossed my mind to ask them to cut it for me.

I would never have thought to ask for a pizza to be cut up. Although I have been to Italian deli style restaurants that provide you with your ow pizza cutter.

Its usually standard to serve pizza pre sliced isn't it?

Why on earth would you ask? It wouldn’t occur to me to ask staff to cut up the dc’s food. I just do it myself

I would normally, but I was there with my 85 year old grandma and young DN who usually go just the two of them and my Grandma has asked before I had even clocked what was happening.
My grandma always asks for her pizzas to be cut up in the kitchen as she’s very independent and would be mortified to ask a member of her family to cut up her food. It’s one thing the pizza already being sliced and another for her to ask someone at the table to do it for her.

I don't claim to be familiar with the wording of every single EU directive, but I think it's highly unlikely that there's one banning pizza cutters .

I also can't work out why pizza cutters would be considered to be an unacceptable H&S risk, or is it that they might be more difficult to clean than a knife .

Sometimes a pizza comes ready cut up, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes you get a pizza cutter, sometimes you have to use a knife and fork. I really don't care which.

Pizza Hut cut up pizza’s so I think your being daft to suggest this is an EU reg! I would imagine in order to avoid cross contamination the expectation is a clean cutter is used each time. Maybe they just want to cut out the risk of this by just not doing it which is a bit shit really

Of course it’s not an EU rule, I’m not suggesting that.

I’m just saying it was a really odd rule and the staffs insistence it was health and safety was strange.
I was pointing out that it’s ironic that a man who has gone on about being free of silly rules from the EU has weird ones in his own establishment.

It will be all worth it then, job losses, the pound losing value, and a recession looming. We will be a able to demand our pizzas cutted up.

Of course it’s not weird to ask the kitchen to cut up a pizza or to be given a pizza slice.

It came about because the last time my grandma and niece had eaten there together they’d really struggled to cut up the pizza so just asked the waitress to ask the chef to cut it.

Op yanbu...I’ve never seen a pizza served that isn’t pre-sliced (or comes with a cutter as part of the ‘experience’).

I don’t like pizza but dh and the dc do so over the years we’ve had it a number of times in places all over the country...always cut.

I think YWBU to ask them to cut it up for you; you should have just cut it yourself. You don’t even need a steak knife - I frequently have Wetherspoons pizzas and a regular knife is sufficient.

You kind of did suggest it! I agree with you that it’s inconvenient that the staff couldn’t oblige your wishes, but to blame the eu was a massive leap!
The owner of Wetherspoons has promoted leave because he will personally benefit financially from it, not because he wants to make life easier for his customers.

How would your grandmother cope with cutting up eg chicken and chips? Would she need help there?

Perfectly I live in London. Nope, never come across pre-sliced pizza.
