Not allowed to cut up pizza in Wetherspoons?

Calvinsmam · 30/01/2019 10:56

We were in Wetherspoons at the weekend having a cheap and cheerful lunch and my DN had a pizza.
We asked them if they could cut up her pizza for her because the last time it wasn’t and the waitress told us they weren’t allowed to anymore and don’t even have pizza cutters in the kitchen. We laughed as we assumed it was a joke but no when the pizza arrived it wasn’t cut up and the waitress said again that for health and safety reasons they weren’t allowed to use a pizza cutter, we asked if they could have used a knife and she said no. We were a bit Hmm
Then she came over with a very sharp steak knife and said we could cut it up ourselves with that if we wanted.

Is this a nationwide rule or is our local Wetherspoons a bit odd?

Also isn’t the owner of Wetherspoons desperate to get us out of the EU because of silly little rules like this?

If you want silver service and all that tosh don't go for a 'cheap and cheerful lunch

Mumsnet is hilarious at times, in what world is asking for a pizza to come already sliced "silver service" - its a perfectly normal thing!!

FWIW OP, I don't thi k it was an unreasonable request, pizza is a pain to cut with a knife and fork, and I can't imagine the steak knife was that sharp either, meaning it will drag all the toppings with it.

When I make pizza at home, I use scissors to cut it up, many people are horrified, but I firmly believe that they are one of the most underutilised kitchen implements and am prepared to die on that hill.

Even with your expliantion I still think it’s a mountain out of a molehill situation!

Wellcolourmehappy · 30/01/2019 11:37

My son works at a Wetherspoons part time and he said they were told that the pizzas were no longer being served with a pizza cutter as customers were using them as weapons. We did have a bit of laugh at this as it seemed strange that people would use a pizza cutter as a weapon but apparently not knives and forks? They are not supposed to cut them for customers as there are then complaints about how the member of staff has cut it - too small, too big etc but you should be given a knife and fork just as you would with any other meal.

@Sockwomble - a kindred spirit I see!

Calvinsmam · 30/01/2019 11:38

mook

I get your point about brexit, but I was gatecrashing my dn and grandmas date so didn’t feel I could say where we should go. Especially as I’ve fallen out with my very pro bexit grandma about brexit many times and we are just now back to how we were before the referendum.

OP is not unreasonable. I have severe weakness in my hands and I'm disabled. I'd personally find it humiliating to ask DH to cut my food up for me. To the extent that I don't eat steak out anymore. I choose fish as it pulls apart really easily. And if I chose pizza, it would be because I'd expect it to be in slices.

Fatasfook · 30/01/2019 11:40

“My lighthearted thread was simply pointing out what a stupid rule it was, especially when you’re allowed a steak knife, and especially in the establishment of a man who public ally declares often how much he hates silly rules.“

Yes, but the real rules he is complaining about is the fact that he has to comply with eu standards when buying food and wants it to be able to buy even cheaper, even worse quality food to feed his customers so he can increase his profit margins. He’s a twat and we should all be boycotting his crappy establishments.

NotBadConsidering · 30/01/2019 11:40

The more you pay for a pizza, the less likely it is to be cut up.

Plus, if you eat your pizza with a knife and fork, just be aware that is how Donald Trump eats his. I’m not saying you’re just like him...but it puts you in the same league obviously Wink

Yousignup · 30/01/2019 11:42

Sorry OP, I also thought you were suggesting it was an EU rule. Basically I think restaraunts can make whatever rules up they like, and call it H and S policy.

That I can’t disagree with.

I think the rules have changed because of GDPR.

hihellohihey · 30/01/2019 11:44

This happened in my local spoons too!

hihellohihey · 30/01/2019 11:44

I wonder if it's the same one?

StrawberryBlondeRed · 30/01/2019 11:45

Not apparently OP, it was a question. Wink

PopCakes · 30/01/2019 11:45

I love how asking to cut up a pizza is considered some kind of luxury silver service treatment. I know most weather spoons food is just defrosted and heated up but they must have a knife at hand!

Of course it's not a big deal to cut your own pizza but it's very odd they'd refuse to do it.

Ah no I'm in Stamford, but the exact same scenario just last week!

User758172 · 30/01/2019 11:54

You cannot be serious. What a mountain out a molehill.

Cut it up yourself. It would have taken you all of thirty seconds. Big fucking deal.

Yes! I'm saving this comment for the next 'what's the funniest/strangest/weirdest thing you've seen on Mumsnet?' thread.

OP, I get exactly what you're saying, it's very weird, but I think the pp's explanation about cross contamination is probably the reason behind it.

Mookatron · 30/01/2019 11:58

Ariadne your sweariness is somewhat making a mountain out of a molehill over the OP's mountain out of a molehill TBH.

Calvinsmam I had to go there for a similar reason my self recently. That's how I know about the propaganda. Don't order the Teriyaki noodles FYI, they're execrable.

Calvinsmam · 30/01/2019 11:59

Well it would take me 30 seconds but not my 85 year old grandma or my young niece, and they usually go without me. My Grandma is fiercely independent and would hate the thought of me having to cut up her food for her. It may seem like a small thing to you but for people with limited mobility it’s a massive thing.

@Mookatron

I can’t understand how this is even a problem. Why you’d bother posting about it. It’s such a non-issue!

ILoveautumnleaves · 30/01/2019 12:00

calvinsmam.

It was all clear from your OP.

I’m with a PP who posted...I didn't read it that you were blaming an EU rule, but then I am quite old and I think we were taught English Comprehension more thoroughly at school...

MN is getting DIRE

ShowMeTheKittens · 30/01/2019 12:01

Quite often pizzas are served uncut...???
I do think it's odd about the pizza wheel. I think she must be a bit mixed up.

ShowMeTheKittens · 30/01/2019 12:02

Because it's called Wether SPOONS no knives are allowed... ?
