Not allowed to cut up pizza in Wetherspoons?

We were in Wetherspoons at the weekend having a cheap and cheerful lunch and my DN had a pizza.
We asked them if they could cut up her pizza for her because the last time it wasn’t and the waitress told us they weren’t allowed to anymore and don’t even have pizza cutters in the kitchen. We laughed as we assumed it was a joke but no when the pizza arrived it wasn’t cut up and the waitress said again that for health and safety reasons they weren’t allowed to use a pizza cutter, we asked if they could have used a knife and she said no. We were a bit Hmm
Then she came over with a very sharp steak knife and said we could cut it up ourselves with that if we wanted.

Is this a nationwide rule or is our local Wetherspoons a bit odd?

Also isn’t the owner of Wetherspoons desperate to get us out of the EU because of silly little rules like this?

It's only takeaways that cut your pizza up for you!

It’s really not...we’ve been to plenty of Italians where it’s pre-cut.

OutPinked · 30/01/2019 11:13

Doubtful it’s for health and safety reasons, more like it saves them time. Having said that, authentic Italian restaurants generally don’t cut the pizza but do provide a cutter.

Sorry I worded my OP badly, I know it’s not an EU rule. Otherwise pizza slices would be banned everywhere and they clearly aren’t.

I've never had pizza that has come pre-sliced. They always give you a whole one.

Come off it! Never?! You’ve never bought a takeaway pizza that’s been sliced? Has every single pizza you’ve ever bought been given to you with the expectation to tear the hot material into manageable pieces without pulling the topping off in the process?

Surely sliced pizzas are the norm? The only time I have had one not sliced is when it’s been at some fancier, artisanal type place. How can you steal/have stolen a slice by someone if it isn’t pre-sliced?

GerryblewuptheER · 30/01/2019 11:13

There's a huge difference between cutting chicken and trying to cut up a pizza which regular knives don't always cut through the crust and the large ones hang off the edge of the plate and you have to shift it about whilst trying not to have the topping slide off

DarlingNikita · 30/01/2019 11:13

I was pointing out that it’s ironic that a man who has gone on about being free of silly rules from the EU has weird ones in his own establishment.

Yes, it seems very petty.

And I'd be surprised if I ordered a pizza and it came not cut up.

Prisonbreak · 30/01/2019 11:14

Weatherspoons buy in their eggs... pre poached. Let that sink in Confused then eat elsewhere. It’s not food!!

Calvinsmam · 30/01/2019 11:14

Chicken and chips wouldn’t be a problem as they are easy to cut up, pizzas are harder to cut up, hence why they often come with a special cutter or a steak knife.

daisypond · 30/01/2019 11:16

notbad I've never had take-away pizza. I'm talking about pizza in restaurants.

BarbaraofSevillle · 30/01/2019 11:16

If you get pizza on a plate in a restaurant it usually comes whole, but if you order it from a takeaway, they usually slice it for you, probably because many people just eat it straight out of the box. That's my experience as far as I recall.

God I really want pizza now.

marymarkle · 30/01/2019 11:18

Has the boss worked out that he saves money by not buying pizza cutters and blames it on health and safety? I guarantee this will be about saving money.

JacksonPillock · 30/01/2019 11:18

In a proper restaurant, pizzas are served whole.

Takeaway pizzas from Pizza Hut, Dominos, Papa Johns, and others like them, always come sliced.

I have never had any issue whatsoever cutting a pizza with a normal knife.

BejamNostalgia · 30/01/2019 11:18

It’s probably due to allergies to avoid the risk of cross contamination. Also to reduce employee injuries and compensation claims.

Isadora2007 · 30/01/2019 11:19

Maybe weatherspoons staff are unable to cut. To be fair they are only opening bags and reheating stuff normally, cutting pizza might require some level of skill.

I think it’s definitely a bit odd they couldn’t cut your pizza for you. Though I’ve been served both cut and uncut pizza at restaurants before. Just to add to the debate of what is normal.

JacksonPillock · 30/01/2019 11:19

Why on earth not?? You're missing out

Oh for fuck's fucking sake

Hmm Hmm Hmm

wigglybeezer · 30/01/2019 11:19

I didn't read it that you were blaming an EU rule, but then I am quite old and I think we were taught English Comprehension more thoroughly at school...

Redglitter · 30/01/2019 11:19

Anytime I've had pizza in a restaurant its either come sliced or come with a pizza cutter. Ive never been served a whole pizza and been left to get on with it with just a knife and fork

JacksonPillock · 30/01/2019 11:20

Maybe the owner lost a loved one to a terrible pizza-wheel accident and is now traumatised by them and never wants to see one again.

Calvinsmam · 30/01/2019 11:20

Are you 85?

Also most pizza restaurants will give you a sharper knife for a pizza, and if you ask for it sliced they’ll do it no bother.

Angrybird345 · 30/01/2019 11:20

Seriously??? Just cut it yourself!!!

Sirzy · 30/01/2019 11:20

But you where given a steak knife when you asked so what’s the issue?

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 30/01/2019 11:22

I once asked at the customer service desk for a wallpaper sample in a home ware store, the assistant told me I had to go wait in the decorating dept (2 aisles) and she would ask someone to come over as she wasn't allowed to use the scissors.
Sheer disbelief.

Health & safety gone crackers.

adaline · 30/01/2019 11:22

My God - just cut your own pizza!
