Not allowed to cut up pizza in Wetherspoons?

Calvinsmam · 30/01/2019 10:56

We were in Wetherspoons at the weekend having a cheap and cheerful lunch and my DN had a pizza.
We asked them if they could cut up her pizza for her because the last time it wasn’t and the waitress told us they weren’t allowed to anymore and don’t even have pizza cutters in the kitchen. We laughed as we assumed it was a joke but no when the pizza arrived it wasn’t cut up and the waitress said again that for health and safety reasons they weren’t allowed to use a pizza cutter, we asked if they could have used a knife and she said no. We were a bit Hmm
Then she came over with a very sharp steak knife and said we could cut it up ourselves with that if we wanted.

Is this a nationwide rule or is our local Wetherspoons a bit odd?

Also isn’t the owner of Wetherspoons desperate to get us out of the EU because of silly little rules like this?

If this is actually "a rule", it's a fucking stupid one.

My ex once had broken his right hand so we asked if they could cut his steak into slices in the kitchen to make it a bit easier to manage. They did it (with only the smallest of sniggers) because it didn't take them much effort and they valued good customer service.

BarbaraofSevillle · 30/01/2019 12:03

The comment about the EU rule was definitely implied even if it wasn't explictly blaming the EU.

But what do I know, I went to school in the 1970s and 1980s where I remember being taught very little English at all and we were off school frequently because either the teachers were on strike, or the boiler was broken.

@Calvinsmam

Massive thing? It’s a pizza! I’ll ask my great-grandfather with arthritic hands if he considers it a bid deal! Grin

BarbaraofSevillle · 30/01/2019 12:08

You could argue that this is a disability discrimination issue. What if the OPs Nan, or anyone else who has difficulty cutting up food, for whatever reason, went for a Wetherspoons by themselves?

They could reasonably ask for someone in the kitchen to slice the pizza, otherwise they wouldn't be able to eat it. Are we really supposed to believe that no Wetherspoons kitchen staff are required to or allowed to use knives and pizza cutters? I know that most of the food is pre-prepared off site, but really?

Calvinsmam · 30/01/2019 12:08

Well there’s been a number of people on the thread who have limited mobility saying they find this kind of small adjustments so they can maintain their independence and dignity important.
But obviously if you don’t think it’s a big deal to make allowances then they are just being silly.

You are not BU but now I’m craving pizza so badly.

cdtaylornats · 30/01/2019 12:11

The owner of Wetherspoons has promoted leave because he will personally benefit financially from it

Really how? Link to some facts please.

HellonHeels · 30/01/2019 12:12

Well at least post-Brexit we'll be able to have our pizzas pre cut! Should add that to the "what are the good things about Brexit" thread.

fiydwi · 30/01/2019 12:12

I had a pizza in Wetherspoons sat night. It came cut up into quarters ( I think 😂)

I’ve already said I don’t think it’s an EU rule.

Takeaway pizza is sliced - restaurant pizza isn't. I go to pizza express a lot - always whole!
I have had Wetherspoons pizza twice - was never sliced!

^I once asked at the customer service desk for a wallpaper sample in a home ware store, the assistant told me I had to go wait in the decorating dept (2 aisles) and she would ask someone to come over as she wasn't allowed to use the scissors
Sheer disbelief.^

Probably was under eighteen.

LostInShoebiz · 30/01/2019 12:19

Instead of cutting up the damn pizza the waiter made a song and dance about how the kitchen staff would e unable to fulfil such a request.

I missed the bit where a straight forward explanation and provision of a solution (the steak knife) became a song and dance.

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 30/01/2019 12:20

My dc use scissors at school!! Presumably without a teacher holdinging their hand.

midsomermurderess · 30/01/2019 12:21

I very much doubt this has anything to do with the EU. And very often people say oh, it's Health and Safety when it is no such thing, it's simply a way to not have to explain or justify somethng you have decided to do or not do yourself.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 30/01/2019 12:23

For Gods sakes

Does every post have to have an OP mention the EU/Brexit !!

Don't eat there if you cannot stand the owner, or is it because its cheaper than say Pizza Hut ?!

SharedLife · 30/01/2019 12:25

Whenever I've had a whole uncut pizza served to me, its always come with a pizza cutter! Apart from in spoons where it has come uncut with normal cutlery. Its quite messy trying to cut a thin crust "pizza oven" style pizza with a knife.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 30/01/2019 12:25

However, it does seem bizarre, to me, that she brought out a steak knife ! loll Far more dangerous in certain hands than a pizza cutter.

Mookatron · 30/01/2019 12:26

A post about Wetherspoons is bound to mention Brexit WhentheRabbitsWentWild as its owner very publicly supports it - and puts Brexit propaganda on the tables.

Go and hide in a hole somewhere if you can't stand talk about something that's going to happen in 2 months and will affect every single person in the country.

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 30/01/2019 12:28

I used to work in a huge chain diy store that ran classes in store for various things like wiring plugs and laying flooring etc. I was given a disciplinary for changing the light bulb in the toilets. That was in the name of health and safety.

Tinkobell · 30/01/2019 12:32

Mmmm.....the banning of dangerous pizza wheel cutters sounds very much like an EU directive! I suggest you write to the chairman, Tim Martin, and put it to him directly, that once We leave the EU, does he intend to reinstate the use of pizza cutters in his pubs?
By the way, it's a bit blooming flimsy of you OP, to not just pick up a knife and fork and get stuck into the pizza.....fgs.

Wherearemymarbles · 30/01/2019 12:33

Places like this the only thing anyone working in the kitchen are qualified to do is open packaging and use a microwave!

Tinkobell · 30/01/2019 12:35

I'm sure I once saw a horror movie that involved a pizza wheel cutter...it was pretty gruesome ...Hammer House of Horrors perhaps?

GoldilocksAndTheThreePears · 30/01/2019 12:35

It's little things like this that ruin your day, if you have relevant physical issues. I have bad arthritis, especially in my hands, so on the few occasions I get out I'll order something I know I can eat single handed as I struggle even gripping a fork let alone applying pressure to cut or pull food apart. It just destroys all illusion of independence and normalcy to have to sit and wait for someone to reach over or stand over you and cut up your food like a toddler. I have to choose food based on if I can get it to my mouth rather than taste. Its bad enough with the straws, yes it is better for the environment not to use them but more and more places just don't offer any alternative and I can't grip a cup or lift it. Assuming the place has cooked the food, the few seconds it would take to just slice it once it's on the plate, it makes a lot of difference to people with issues.
