Not allowed to cut up pizza in Wetherspoons?

We were in Wetherspoons at the weekend having a cheap and cheerful lunch and my DN had a pizza.
We asked them if they could cut up her pizza for her because the last time it wasn’t and the waitress told us they weren’t allowed to anymore and don’t even have pizza cutters in the kitchen. We laughed as we assumed it was a joke but no when the pizza arrived it wasn’t cut up and the waitress said again that for health and safety reasons they weren’t allowed to use a pizza cutter, we asked if they could have used a knife and she said no. We were a bit Hmm
Then she came over with a very sharp steak knife and said we could cut it up ourselves with that if we wanted.

Is this a nationwide rule or is our local Wetherspoons a bit odd?

Also isn’t the owner of Wetherspoons desperate to get us out of the EU because of silly little rules like this?

This is Wetherspoons. One of the reasons it’s cheap is they don’t waste time cutting your food up for you.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 30/01/2019 12:40

Surely its a parents job to cut their kids food up and if an elderly person can't cut up their food then they need a carer.

Neither of which are jobs for WAIT staff.

SoftPlant · 30/01/2019 12:40

OPs original post was perfectly easy to understand.

I agree with PP that people need to work on their reading comprehension before posting. What a mess of a thread.

Takeaway pizza is sliced - restaurant pizza isn't

This

Fatasfook · 30/01/2019 12:41

“This is Wetherspoons. One of the reasons it’s cheap is they don’t waste time cutting your food up for you.“

Wrong. The reason it is cheap is because they don’t employ trained staff, they pay minimum wage, they outsource the actual cooking and they buy the cheapest ingredients possible.

m.youtube.com/watch?v=i2jj8WKA2SY ......the movie was "Don't Go to Sleep" 1982.... worth watching for the hairdos. Pizza cutters are clearly seriously bad news 😁

@I don't claim to be familiar with the wording of every single EU directive, but I think it's highly unlikely that there's one banning pizza cutters*

There was one banning banana shaped bananas and cucumber shaped cucumbers so I wouldn't be surprised if there was.

Calvinsmam · 30/01/2019 12:44

I’m actually horrified by the lack of empathy people have for those who might struggle with hand mobility.

The idea that you need a carer if you struggle to cut up a pizza without a pizza slicer is shocking.

Lots of people have things to make allowances in daily life to make their lives easier, should they have to stay at home without a carer?

She asked for her pizza to come Pre sliced not the waiter to peg feed it to her.

Our pizzas round here are never cut in a restaurant but always as a takeaway.

Personally I like mine untouched thank you very much.

Calvinsmam · 30/01/2019 12:45

Which is why my grandma asks them to pre slice it for her.

Great don’t ask it to be sliced then.

Frickssake · 30/01/2019 12:48

Its usually standard to serve pizza pre sliced isn't it?

I've never been served a pizza that hasn't been cut

Pizza Express anyone?

MoreCheeseDear · 30/01/2019 12:50

When they first started doing Pizzas they did come with a wheel. No idea why they stopped.

Fatasfook · 30/01/2019 12:51

“Calvinsmam

This is a country which keeps voting in a Tory government, with their cruel punishing policies that discriminate against and punish anyone with a disability. We live in horrifying times.

Rogueaccountant · 30/01/2019 12:51

@Fatasfook:

There are several reasons ‘Spoons is cheap. My reason is one of them.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 30/01/2019 12:52

It’s clear that OP sees the ‘silly little rule’ as an EU one, otherwise why would the owner of Whetherspoons be desperate to get us out of it? Why even mention the EU if it’s nothing to do with them?

Except the thread didn’t go the way she wanted.

Rogueaccountant · 30/01/2019 12:52

And they pay the highest pub wages in my town.

Birdsgottafly · 30/01/2019 12:53

In Pizza hut they have wheel ones for the gluten free and sticker colour coded, half-moon, pizza knives for the ordinary bases. Similar to the chopping board colour coding system.

Perhaps the Manager has decided not to order the necessary knives. Things like that are often dictated by the budget, or disgresion of the Manager, or chef.

Tinkobell · 30/01/2019 12:54

My lighthearted thread was simply pointing out what a stupid rule it was, especially when you’re allowed a steak knife, and especially in the establishment of a man who public ally declares often how much he hates silly rules
Make your mind up OP, is this as you say, light hearted thread or are you actually making a serious point. If you say lighthearted take people's remarks on the chin.....instead of getting narked off. Nobody seriously wants to see someone with limited mobility struggling....but wouldn't you have had this issue with any large food item - a big steak, a massive baguette etc?

ImMeantToBeWorking · 30/01/2019 12:56

Not sure about in the UK but Milanos in Ireland send the pizza cutters out on the pizza!! Just cut my fecking pizza!!

Calvinsmam · 30/01/2019 12:57

Oh ffs

That’s not what I meant at all. Hmm

I was just pointing out the irony of the owner of Wetherspoons being very publicly ‘health and safety gone mad’ and campaigning very vocally to leave the eu so we don’t have to follow silly little rules, and yet having such a pointless one in his own establishment.

It’s obviously NOT an eu rule or nowhere would be able to cut up my grandmas pizza and she wouldn’t have been surprised that Wetherspoons wouldn’t.

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 30/01/2019 12:58

They probably don't have any knives in the kitchen. It's all ready-prepared stuff. Health and Safety issue, then, to have a pizza cutter there because their staff won't have had Working With Sharp Things training.

StrawberryBlondeRed · 30/01/2019 12:59

Aww SoftPlant more like soft in the head. X

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 30/01/2019 13:00

everyone is BU for cutting your pizza at all ... years ago on holiday in Rome we watched locals fold it in half like a flat calzone and eat with their hands.

You're all just snobs the lot of youGrin

Mookatron · 30/01/2019 13:00

Christ OP I would hide this thread if I were you. A shame that so few people seem able to
a) read
b) accept your Grandmother's pizza cutting difficulties
c) react with any sense of proportion to what was clearly a 'gosh how silly' thread not a 'OH MY GOD THIS IS DISGRACEFUL!!11' one.
