To be driven mad by a mysterious beep

We’ve got a beep. It’s driving me insane..... it’s not regular and we thought it had gone away once we heard the ‘death beep’. No such luck.... I’ve checked the smoke alarms, they are mains powered and have been updated...... I can’t even locate where the noise is coming from.....

Do you have Alexa? If so ask it to shut down see if that works

We had an incredibly annoying intermittent beep for weeks. It was a very, very slowly dying toy that was in the garage (integrated, so we could hear it in parts of the house).

lifecouldbeadream · 24/01/2019 15:13

We do have Alexa, but the beep was before we got her- good shout though.

I don’t think it’s the fridge.... it does beep, but a different beep, though I will check out whether it could be.... I don’t think it’s coming from that direction though.....

If you have a cordless house phone, check it's in the cradle properly. Ours wasn't and so beeped now and then to let us know it was needing charged.

CantWaitToRetire · 24/01/2019 15:17

My DM complained of a beeping noise in her house. It was intermittent, not regular and she couldn't work out what it was. Went round there and checked her heating/thermostat/everything we could think of. My DH even disabled her house alarm. Still the beeping continued. I went round again and just sat there in the quiet and eventually I heard it. It was notifications on her tablet Grin.

Fatasfook · 24/01/2019 15:17

Kids kindle /iPad left an app open?

CantWaitToRetire · 24/01/2019 15:18

Recently DM's heating thermostat batteries started dying. Her's had a light that flashed, but maybe another type could beep?

lifecouldbeadream · 24/01/2019 15:20

Hmmm. Beep has been going for 12months now..... I don’t think it’s a toy as 2DC too old, garage is not attached..... Toys would only be upstairs, and noise is louder in the kitchen, but not where the appliances are....

Neighbours smoke alarm?

NeutralJanet · 24/01/2019 15:21

Carbon monoxide detector?

LadyLaSnack · 24/01/2019 15:21

Have you got any old battery smoke alarms kicking around in a cupboard/on a shelf/in a box.

I had this. All functioning smoke alarms on the mains. Got the electrician out who found an old battery smoke alarm at the bottom of the fruit bowl.

Seeingadistance · 24/01/2019 15:21

Do you have battery operated CO detectors?

A few years back I eventually traced a beep to a CO detector hidden and forgotten about on top of a tall cupboard.

gamerchick · 24/01/2019 15:22

Carbon monoxide detector?

Was just about to say. That's what mine was, drove me nuts.

lifecouldbeadream · 24/01/2019 15:22

Not an iPad/tablet, it is like a smoke alarm type beep..... but definitely NOT a smoke alarm, the thermostat is old and mains wired.

Keep ‘em coming. Reading your ideas gives me hope..... and I realise how many things we own that beep! Grin

Just read that it’s louder in the kitchen - old smoke alarm lying unused high up on top of the cabinets?

PickleFish · 24/01/2019 15:23

old watch in a drawer? stopwatch? I had a child set my stopwatch to beep at some random time.

lifecouldbeadream · 24/01/2019 15:23

We’re detached, so not neighbours. Could be carbon monoxide detector..... but I don’t know where in the house that might be, as we’ve only lived here for the last year or so.

I had an old stopwatch in a junk box that beeped when the batteries were running out, took me ages to work it out. Also could it be a digital watch?

lifecouldbeadream · 24/01/2019 15:25

Cupboards where it’s loudest go up to the ceiling, if I had to put a bet on I’d say it’s in the wall/ceiling...... but no idea what it’d be... I’m sure if it was a battery operated thing it’d have died after 12 months beeping.....

When you say 'not regular' OP, how often do you hear it, and how many times does it beep when it goes off?

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 24/01/2019 15:25

My carbon monoxide alarms beep like this when batteries need changing or they are coming to the end of their life, they don’t work forever.

The carbon monoxide detectors I've had haven't ever been fixed to anything. They're small and simply put somewhere out of the way. If you've only lived there a short time, then it might have been dislodged when previous owners moved out/you moved in.

CO detector could have fallen down the back of a cupboard...
