To be driven mad by a mysterious beep

We’ve got a beep. It’s driving me insane..... it’s not regular and we thought it had gone away once we heard the ‘death beep’. No such luck.... I’ve checked the smoke alarms, they are mains powered and have been updated...... I can’t even locate where the noise is coming from.....

The sound is probably bouncing around making it sound like it's coming from elsewhere.

In our stairwell downstairs we can hear the neighbours in their living room. In the room which has an adjoining wall to their living room.. nothing Confused

I hope you find your beeping source soon!

minieggmunchers · 29/01/2019 19:43

I would have gone insane if this had gone on more than a day! How are you not going mad OP?! I had it once- turned out I had a smoke alarm in a place I had never seen! Hidden behind a strip of lights on the ceiling, it must have been there before I moved in. Was covered in dust and hadn't been touched in years!! I know you say it isn't a smoke detector, but after this time is has to be something mains connected as the battery would have died. Keep updating, would love to know. Hope your sanity is still in tact OP!

Just wait til it starts singing "Daisy...daisy...give...me...your...answer...do"

Then you're in big trouble.

lifecouldbeadream · 29/01/2019 19:46

I think I need to see if I can identify a pattern of sound...... then I can switch all the power off... my big worry is that it’s something mains powered with a battery back up..... it may never stopShock

Do you have an extractor hood above the cooker? Mine has a filter and it beeps when it needs replacing. Except you can't reset the bloody thing, so now I've replaced the filter and it still beeps. But only when the extractor hood isn't pushed back completely.

Girlwhowearsglasses · 29/01/2019 19:55

We had a mystery noise In the bedroom, a multiple clicking noise. Could not believe it was real for a while, then one day I heard it again - outside. There is a defunct motion sensor light on the side of our house - and every time the cat walks along the fence it makes a noise - even though the bulb has gone.

Have you checked outside OP?

madmumofteens · 29/01/2019 20:02

We had similar problem turned out it was the smoke alarms back up battery, it is hard wired to the electric so didn't realise it had a battery as well

FixTheBone · 29/01/2019 20:02

Other things, could it be a moisture sensor? Some mains lights with contingency lighting for power cuts have a beep in them. A window sensor or something to do with an alarm system?

Roomba · 29/01/2019 20:06

I had this and it turned out to be an old watch that came as a free gift with something and got chucked in a cupboard. Took weeks to find the source! No idea why it kept beeping randomly either, but it stopped when I took the battery out.

beansontoastfortea · 29/01/2019 20:53

Shamelessly place marking... I need to know what that sounds is now op ;)

lifecouldbeadream · 29/01/2019 21:06

Definitely NOT a smoke alarm. Definitely not outside, and too loud to be a watch.

We’ve changed the alarm panel in case it was that..... £150 later..... it isn’t.

The beep is in the centre of the house and is heard around a blocked up wall..... but it doesn’t appear to be coming from the wall, more sort of overhead, but upstairs it also seems overhead....

It is absolutely infuriating......

My house alarm used yo beep when batteries needed changing in main unit and/or sensors. Could it be an old alarm?
My money is on carbon monoxide alarm batteries though.

Firstty · 29/01/2019 21:11

Our unexplained beep was a baby monitor that had become disconnected at one end. Doesn't sound like that's the case with you but Sharing just in case it helps

Skinandbones · 29/01/2019 21:14

We had this it drove us mad for weeks, we kept checking the smoke alarms, dh changed their batteries too, it still went on. I told him he was a numpty for using cheap batteries, so he went and tried the good ones. No joy.
Day later he came upstairs with the carbon monitor in his hand. It had been between the wall and the bookcase.
Just check everything, does the central heating wall thing use batteries.
Can't really think of anything else.

Mummy2one2016 · 29/01/2019 21:16

Has the roof been lowered and boarded. Hiding something. I wonder if the little box you can see is an old plug. We used to have a little plug in that connected to our oil tank in our old house we stopped using it as it used to lose connection all the time and beep.

user1471592953 · 29/01/2019 21:25

HRTFT but do you have a control panel on your hob? Ours beeps if it is covered up by something.

babysharkah · 29/01/2019 21:34

Ffs. I read this and the bloody smoke alarm started beeping. H currently trying to track it with a stick.

EKGEMS · 29/01/2019 21:38

Reminds me of Melissa McCarthy in Mike&Molly where she's trying to work and smoke detector starts chirping

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 29/01/2019 21:41

I bloody well had a dream about this last night Hmm

Villanellenovella · 29/01/2019 21:50

Could you get hold of a stethoscope? I saw dr who use one on walls the other day!

HeronLanyon · 29/01/2019 21:52

Once had something similar but a squealing sound. Low. Finally brain registered it after a year or so. Only very early morning for few hours. Then realised could hear it in the street also. Then a few neighbours said they could hear it and it sometimes woke them. We set up a drive around very early to find what it was. Ended up it was a gas tower around half a mile away - squealing. close up was very loud. That started mammoth local noise nuisance campaign successful but time consuming and at times I think ‘they’ thought we were crazy. Local authority not too happy about getting up at 330am to monitor. Some days I wish I had not ever noticed !!!
Good luck op. You’ve been remarkably patient living with it for so long !!

madmumofteens · 29/01/2019 22:00

Another thought have you checked the loft we got an alarm thing to try and scare off a resident squirrel maybe an old one up there??

bourbonbiccy · 29/01/2019 22:05

Have you checked in the loft. We had a mosquito repellent alarm, attached to a mosquito net on our holiday buggy that lives in the loft..that beeps as and when it bloomin feels like it

HeronLanyon · 29/01/2019 22:11

Op can you feel us all checking out where our sledge hammers are and thinking about forming a posse to help? Grin

TheBlessedCheesemaker · 30/01/2019 05:24

I think you need to work out it it is coming from a battery or is hardwired to the mains. If you know an appx time it might strike I’d be inclined to switch off the electric circuits to see if it still makes a sound. If it does then it’s battery-related and will therefore die eventually, whereas if it’s hardwired you may have the incentive you need to take a sledgehammer to a wall.
