To be driven mad by a mysterious beep

We’ve got a beep. It’s driving me insane..... it’s not regular and we thought it had gone away once we heard the ‘death beep’. No such luck.... I’ve checked the smoke alarms, they are mains powered and have been updated...... I can’t even locate where the noise is coming from.....

Stopwatch would still beep after 12 months if its anything like the one in my cupboard that i cant be bothered to find...

Seeingadistance · 24/01/2019 15:32

You've been hearing it beep for a year?!

I'd have ripped the house apart long ago to find it!

CantWaitToRetire · 24/01/2019 15:34

Shock I wasn't expecting that many!

Morgan12 · 24/01/2019 15:35

We had this and it was the fridge. I hope you find it it must be driving you nuts!

Mummy2one2016 · 24/01/2019 15:36

This happened us couldnt work out where it was coming from turns out, built in electric smoke alarms have back up batteries for power cuts etc.

gamerchick · 24/01/2019 15:37

Where's your boiler, it could be around that?

holidayarmadillo2019 · 24/01/2019 15:38

Electric meter

holidayarmadillo2019 · 24/01/2019 15:40

It could be the battery dying

Wavingwhiledrowning · 24/01/2019 15:41

This reminds me of a news story a couple of years ago. Definitely try not to go this far!

Mine was an old carbon monoxide detector that was in a box, after moving to a new flat where we didn't need it.

CantWaitToRetire · 24/01/2019 15:41

If there's a smoke alarm nearby, it could be dust on the sensors. That can cause a detector to beep.

Pieceofpurplesky · 24/01/2019 15:42

It sounds like my electricity wired smoke detector that beeps when it gets below a certain temperature.

hellojim · 24/01/2019 15:45

Our burglar alarm beeps when the batteries in the sensors need to be replaced

Veronicat · 24/01/2019 15:46

My MIL has this. Turns out it's an old smoke alarm that the roofing and insulation guys have boarded up behind a wall . We need to get to it somehow but its going to cause a bit of damage.

Warmworm · 24/01/2019 15:46

My next door neighbour has had cctv installed that beeps every time someone walks by. I can hear it clearly at the front of my house. Could it be something like that?

bookbook · 24/01/2019 15:46

The beep in my kitchen that drove me mad - a minute minder in a drawer ( it had lost the magnet that stuck it to the fridge door) - only beeped occasionally, when something moved and it got knocked around .

Justmuddlingalong · 24/01/2019 15:49

Battery in kitchen scales running low?

glamorousgrandmother · 24/01/2019 15:53

Our smoke alarms are wired to the mains but still have batteries which beep when they need changing.

Myusernameismud · 24/01/2019 15:54

This is a bit like The Tell-tale Heart, but instead of being driven mad by the imaginary heartbeat of someone you murdered, it's the beeping of a smoke alarm you destroyed many a year ago.

Done any smoke alarm murdering at all OP?

SuchAToDo · 24/01/2019 15:54

Op you need to narrow it down...

Keep a notepad to hand, and every time you hear it, write down the date, time, room you were in, and direction the sound seem to come from...(e.g if you were in your bedroom/kitchen/hallway etc and the noise seemed to come from behind you or to your left etc)

Do this every time and see if it's happening at certain times or on certain days....if it IS happening regularly on certain times then at those particular times of day have people in different rooms, wait for the beep and try and figure out /narrow down where it's coming from....you will be able to figure it out if you get organised 😀👍

SuchAToDo · 24/01/2019 15:57

Also is the whole household hearing it or just you...if it's just you it could be tinnitus (that can make you hear beeps)...or it could be even an earwax build up (I once heard beeping regularly and dr looked in my ear and it was a build.up of ear wax)...if it's just you then maybe it could be your ears?...if your whole household.is hearing it then disregard what I said 😀

Muchtoomuchtodo · 24/01/2019 15:59

Our smoke alarms are mains operated too but also have batteries in case of power cuts I think.

They have beeped when the batteries are going flat. Might be worth double checking.

Onceupontwotimes · 24/01/2019 15:59

Ours was wireless speakers.

GinGiminey · 24/01/2019 16:02

My hob beeped if you put something on it? So for example if you left a tray on it it would randomly beep every few minutes or so until you cleared it.

SilverDragonfly1 · 24/01/2019 16:04

Ours was- and I appreciate this is a long shot- a Pokemon tamagotchi type thing that counted your steps and let you play little games with the 'points' you earned. Just randomly started beeping for very short periods a good year or more after my son had lost interest and was eventually found under a chest of drawers about 6 months after the beeping started.
