To be driven mad by a mysterious beep

We’ve got a beep. It’s driving me insane..... it’s not regular and we thought it had gone away once we heard the ‘death beep’. No such luck.... I’ve checked the smoke alarms, they are mains powered and have been updated...... I can’t even locate where the noise is coming from.....

When you changed your fridge filter was there a separate device doing the countdown? Ours are separate. It's a little box we kept in a cupboard near the sink. Maybe the fridge has an inbuilt alarm somewhere? Our fridge sounds like planes taking off at times, it's quite noisy.

I had a random beep once and it was next doors voicemail. If someone left her a message it would beep until she picked it up.

Hohofortherobbers · 24/01/2019 21:53

Even our mains wired smoke alarms have a battery back up which beeps when it needs changing. It might be the smoke alarms

Steamedbadger · 24/01/2019 21:54

Road Runner?

There’s a small red box in my airing cupboard that used to give off a random beep - drove me insane as my DH could never hear it and took forever to locate where it was coming from. Still no idea what the box is for....

Moretinsel · 24/01/2019 21:55

One of our neighbours chucked their smoke alarm in the garden, kept me awake searching for the source!

ItsJustASimpleLine · 24/01/2019 21:56

The battery on my Grandads CO2 alarm went and it started beeping incessantly and randomly it was driving me nuts when I visited. He asked me to replace the battery I explained it couldn't be done and he needed a replacement. I return a week later and I hear the damn thing. Thinking I'm going mad I tried to ignore it but no I could definitely hear it. So I ask him and he's put it in a drawer in the other room "in case he needs it or in case the battery can be replaced in the future". He lives in a flat and has poor hearing, god help his neighbours who had listened to it beeping for a bleeding week. Best part was he's wasn't at risk of CO2 in his flat it was one he'd brought from his old house.

I made sure it went in the outside bin just in time for the bin men to come.

The beeping was just as you describe so I would say it's a long lost CO2 detector.

RemindMeToMoveTheElf · 24/01/2019 22:02

Is it beeping when you have appliances on, though? It could be a working carbon monoxide detector. As a previous poster said, they are supposed to be down low as it’s heavier than air (I’m told), so down near the base of a boiler, cooker, fridge, etc.

So I’d be concerned it’s not random or low batteries but actually warning you. But a cheap CO detector for £5 anyway, as you don’t have one, but if it starts beeping too, you’ll have your answer ...

Bluelonerose · 24/01/2019 22:08

@steamedbadger Grin

My mains smoke alarm started beeping once. I figured it was the battery (as I knew they had batteries as well) changed the battery for a brand new one and the fucking thing still beeped. Shock

After 20 minutes ide had enough and pulled it off the ceiling. No more beeping.

Tuesdaynightname · 24/01/2019 22:08

My MIL spent a week searching for the source of an annoying beep. It kept her awake all night, she even moved FIL and her to the sofa bed downstairs in an attempt to escape, then phoned in the morning to say it had followed her.

Next day, FIL had hospital checkup and they realised that the batteries on his pacemaker were running low. Honest, true story!

JuliaAndJulia · 24/01/2019 22:12

I once had a stopwatch which did this. Found the culprit but couldn't get it to stop except by throwing the whole thing out!

Cismyfatarse1 · 24/01/2019 22:14

We had this. It was an old smoke detector but someone had put a false ceiling up and just put it over the smoke detector. It had been there years until the battery started dying. Our very old flat had been renovated to put spotlights in the corridor. Shoddy builders / previous owners.

Mummy2one2016 · 25/01/2019 13:24

Any updates OP, I am a little over invested in discovering the source of your beep

lifecouldbeadream · 25/01/2019 16:56

Sorry- still not found the source of my beep.... after 12 months I’m not surprised though.

One PP suggested that I note direction when I hear it. I was in the room on the other side of the wall with the gap, when I was in there it sounded like it came from the hall/kitchen. In the kitchen it sounds like it’s coming from the other side of the wall. I am on it/ and I promise, promise , promise I will update once I find it- even if it’s next year I finally do! Grin

Oooh I had this yesterday, drive me nuts...dh remembered seeing a carbon monoxide alarm in the loft (we've not long moved in) problem solved yay.

lifecouldbeadream · 28/01/2019 12:53

Right Folks- does anyone have a T120 signal booster TV link thing? We have part of a system.... I’m wondering if it could be that???

OP posts:
Mummylife2018 · 29/01/2019 18:09

I used to have one of those TV Links and it never made any beeps?

Momdeguerre · 29/01/2019 18:15

I had a beep in my car last year. Drove me bonkers. Took it to the garage after weeks of random beeping whenever I cornered.

Turns out one of my sons was given a metal detector at Christmas and the wand part had fallen down behind the seats and was randomly locating stuff. The garage men laughed at me.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 29/01/2019 18:21

I cannot be the ONLY ONE who has this scene playing in my head?!

lifecouldbeadream · 29/01/2019 19:07

Ha- I watched that the other day.... I heard it last night when upstairs, but I still can’t work out where it’s coming from. I did take a picture ‘inside the wall’ and can see something at the bottom...... will attach pic below. I think it’s a power socket that’s been blocked off..... I am still scratching my head about it. DH can’t hear it properly (hearing issues) so can’t help me identify it....

OP posts:
lifecouldbeadream · 29/01/2019 19:11

It’s the white square bit..... barely visible, but that is low down and the sound is high up..... it sounds like it’s coming from the ceiling, but there’s nothing there it could be.
