To be driven mad by a mysterious beep

lifecouldbeadream · 24/01/2019 15:09

We’ve got a beep. It’s driving me insane..... it’s not regular and we thought it had gone away once we heard the ‘death beep’. No such luck.... I’ve checked the smoke alarms, they are mains powered and have been updated...... I can’t even locate where the noise is coming from.....

Sorry, my first thought when seeing that Friends clip, no one could sleep with that ponytail.

Monty27 · 30/01/2019 06:00

Dishwasher cycle finished?

Monty27 · 30/01/2019 06:04

Bread maker, boiler, some old contraption lying somewhere and needs batteries

bitofabelly · 30/01/2019 06:25

Is it in your attic..above the kitchen?

ItsClemFandangoCanYouHearMe · 30/01/2019 06:27

Is it clearly indoors? My old neighbour had one of those fox alarms and I couldn't sit in my garden because it just cut right through me. Didn't bother anyone else though. Thought I was going mad!

lightlypoached · 30/01/2019 06:30

Our mystery beep was a digital wristwatch in a drawer.
Have also had a musical card that was running out of battery and making weird noises - in the loft of my first flat when I very first lived alone. Freaked me right out !
Oh and (very efficient) German kitchen appliances here. They beep a lot. But in a very regular ordered fashion that one would expect from Siemens. I used to work fir Siemens. They were a very orderly beep type of company

We also have a kids toy police helmet with a flashing siren on top. That fell over in the loft and started wailing in the night.

Beep city here chez Poached.

TadaTralala · 30/01/2019 06:30

oh gawd I'm dying to hear where the beep is coming from?

JustJoinedRightNow · 30/01/2019 06:33

Yep our beep was a digital watch in a drawer that was given to one of the kids.

That’s my only suggestion. Good luck. That would drive me insane!

threesixnine · 30/01/2019 06:38

We once found an old smoke alarm connected to a light. So when the light was on it had power. When the light was off it ran on the battery.

It sat between the lightbulb and the bayonet holder inside the lampshade.

Try the hall light if you have one.

WheelyCote · 30/01/2019 07:32

Fire alarm???

They intermittently beep when the battery is running low

missclimpson · 30/01/2019 07:36

We have this from time to time. It is the mating call of a little green frog that sometimes takes up residence in our cellar. 🐸

Highonthehill · 30/01/2019 07:54

Have you pulled up the floor boards yet? In the attic and first floor...

HeronLanyon · 30/01/2019 07:58

Acoustics are odd. Could it actually be from outside bouncing off a surface in strange way ??
I love central London. Beeps from outside which I do often think are inside include -
Reversing vehicle beeps (just heard and thought was in my kitchen - heat this all day).
Neighbouring business alarms running out of battery - happens a lot random beeps sometimes last for weeks/Months before business owner sorts or neighbours go round to get sorted.
Neighbouring house alarms (internal and external) indicating spent batteries.
Remote car alarms - depending on wind and ambient noise I hear alarms from many streets away but sometimes only one tone so it does not sound like an alarm.
Remote wind chime of which you hear only one level ?

5LeafClover · 30/01/2019 08:00

I had this. Random and no one else could hear it. It used to panic me because I thought it was the CO alarm, then I'd walk round the house trying to find it and couldn't. I'd convinced myself it was tinitus then ( after about 2 years) I walked past a house in the next street and the alarm was cheeping really loudly....and that was it. The sound was actually more annoying in my house than it was when I was stood outside theirs because it was low and direction less.

bellinibobble · 30/01/2019 10:20

I second this. Our neighbour is a lot older than us so can't hear it, but it drives us nuts!

minisoksmakehardwork · 30/01/2019 10:37

Does it occur at the same times through the day or irregularly?

Dd2 set an alarm for a random time of day on her kindle and it took me ages to find that one because it was quiet and sounded like it was coming from outside.

minisoksmakehardwork · 30/01/2019 10:47

Is it a clock @lifecouldbeadream ?

lifecouldbeadream · 30/01/2019 11:19

Oh god.... I’m never going to find it am I?!?

..... off to google fox alarms

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 30/01/2019 13:36

Mole deterrents also make a beeping noise.

beansontoastfortea · 30/01/2019 18:16

You've got to find it op

TadaTralala · 30/01/2019 18:25

Pacemaker from the corpse burried underneath your floorboards?

Come on, we're all dying to know what the beep is!

lifecouldbeadream · 30/01/2019 19:40

Tadatralala. I can promise you.... no-one wants to know what the beep is more than I do.Grin

It’s completely irregular.... and far less frequent than it used to be.... so can never be in a specific place when it goes off. I’m a girl of my word though..... when I find it, I’ll update!

So far: Not fridge/visible smoke alarm/ dishwasher/boiler......not house alarm......

On the down side.... I can’t actually tell which direction it’s coming from

I had this for months.
Was convinced there was a camera in the house.
Turns out to be an electric teddy bear under the bed, batteries were dying Confused creepy

Talkingfrog · 30/01/2019 21:27

I haven't read the full thread, so may have been suggested already. Could it be an oven with built in click. We haven't bother to reset ours as we knock the buttons easily and get a surprise when it beeps at us. We have accidently set a timer or alarm before too.

diymania · 30/01/2019 21:32

My Parents were bothered by an annoying beep and it turned out to be my DFs pacemaker needing a new battery. Took them months to work out what the sound was! 😁
