To be driven mad by a mysterious beep

We’ve got a beep. It’s driving me insane..... it’s not regular and we thought it had gone away once we heard the ‘death beep’. No such luck.... I’ve checked the smoke alarms, they are mains powered and have been updated...... I can’t even locate where the noise is coming from.....

@Wavingwhiledrowning Omg that made me laugh!
"Getting silly"

"Blessed beep"

lifecouldbeadream · 24/01/2019 16:10

Wow! So many replies, thank you.

It’s not near the boiler. Or near the electric meter.

veronicat that’s what I’m afraid of.....

It doesn’t beep quite so frequently now.... but as you can see from the list, it’s not evenly spaced.

We had this once, turned out it was our firealarms, despite being mains powered, they still needed the batteries changing.

Eliza9917 · 24/01/2019 16:11

It could be a bug.

Orangelego · 24/01/2019 16:11

We have a smoke alarm in the attic.... only took about 6 days to figure it out

TillyMint81 · 24/01/2019 16:12

When we did some work in our kitchen we found an old (still wired in) motion detector behind a cupboard!

Justkeeepsmiling · 24/01/2019 16:14

Do you have a "random" drawer where you put everything... 'just in case? ". Could be a watch with an alarm on it? Or something very slowly running out of battery? My smart meter beeps if I've used to much energy In a day, scared the life out of me the first time it happened

nokidshere · 24/01/2019 16:14

Mains power smoke alarms still use batteries and still need changing

Hitmonlee · 24/01/2019 16:15

We had this in September. It was driving me insane. It was the smoke alarm in the loft conversion which I didn’t check because they were mains powered. Turns out they also have batteries 🙄

lifecouldbeadream · 24/01/2019 16:15

Oooh wavingwhiledrowing maybe the dark is the answer.....

It’s not the smoke alarms, it’s what I thought it was, and replaced the whole alarm(s) batteries included.... it’s not that....

We had this, it was the carbon monoxide detector. I even had a main come out and replace the whole wired in fire alarm - it wasn't that!

lifecouldbeadream · 24/01/2019 16:20

I am inclined to think it could be a CO detector..... but I’m utterly unable to find it....... Prior to the list..... I sat for an hour in the place I hear it most often.... waiting for it..... it didn’t beep...It hates me it does

Are you sure? Mine “chirp” when they’re dusty

I saw on Philip Schofield's twitter or instagram a whole thread about him trying to find a random beeping noise. His turned out to be a previously unseen smoke alarm in the loft!

Annoying that the bloody thing knows when you're trying to find it and stops though!

Do you have a plinth around the top of your kitchen cupboards at ceiling height? Could something be behind there?

Do you have a room above the kitchen? It might be easier to lift a carpet and floorboards up there than get in to the ceiling downstairs.

When I sold a property years ago my buyers really messed me around. I contemplated taking some sort of revenge on them and am now gutted I didn't consider concealing a smoke alarm with a dying battery somewhere on the property... they were awful - I'd have loved to have driven them mad! Sorry OP, not helping I know!

Hotfootit · 24/01/2019 16:29

Are you in a terrace, as it could be coming from next door? Our neighbours' smoke alarm battery started beeping when it was running out, nearly caused us to take apart our wardrobe looking for the noise (they were away for the weekend)!

DeathyMcDeathStarFace · 24/01/2019 16:36

Maybe the previous people who lived in your house dropped something like a battery operated smoke detector behind a kitchen cupboard, or if you have kickboards in the kitchen maybe there's something behind them. They are easy to remove to check behind, might be worth looking there before you start ripping apart walls in frustration!

Or, where is your electricity meter and is it a smart meter, if it is and it's in or near the kitchen then check that.

user1471462656 · 24/01/2019 16:44

Agree with the smoke alarm comments, mine do this when the back up battery is low. They’re mains connected and I didn’t realise at first, drove me mad

MegaBat · 24/01/2019 16:53

I had a cat flap that did this - one of the collar/battery ones. Just throwing that out there

ofclocksandkings · 24/01/2019 16:58

I had this and it was a second carbon monoxide detector in with the boiler. I'd checked the one I knew about so so so many times before discovering the second. So maybe that?

TarragonSauce · 24/01/2019 17:26

Do you have a remote room thermostat system for the heating? (But not as technical as a hive)

We were most surprised the other night by our beep, and then a strange symbol on the thermostat. Who knew that thing had batteries? It's been installed 6 years, so they've lasted well.

ChoccyJules · 24/01/2019 17:33

Have you got an induction hob? Ours does this if something is put on it which it takes offence at or has a splash of liquid in the wrong place.

I also second the PP asking if others hear it or just you, as could also be an ear-related thing.

GoToSleepLittleBear · 24/01/2019 17:45

We had this once, over a month, intermittent beeps coming from the direction of the kitchen (though far less frequently than yours, maybe every hour or so). Turned out to be a meat thermometer that we'd had for about 25 years, and clearly use so infrequently that the batteries had lasted that long!

Oddcat · 24/01/2019 17:53

Omg, I hate things like this - we had a beep years ago , drove us insane, every time we went where we thought it was coming from , it seemed to then come from somewhere else.

We were just about to start taking floor boards up when we discovered a slowly dying Furby stuffed under the sofa.

lifecouldbeadream · 24/01/2019 19:16

Thank you all.....

So- initially I thought it was the smoke alarms..... and dusted and replaced batteries, when that didn’t solve it, I replaced the whole alarms.... they are mains powered and last 10 years..... that still didn’t fix it. So it’s definitely not the smoke alarms.

I’d not thought to check under baseboard..... that might be an idea.

We do have a hollow wall in the vicinity.... so it could be that..... Confused

I am not the only person who can hear it, so not my ears.Grin
I promise when I find it- I will update. I am determined to find it now.......
