To think there is so much bollocks advice on MN?

Some of the "advice" offered up on this website is just ridiculous at best and actually damaging at worst. If you are having huge issues for e.g with your child's
behaviour, fgs go to your gp or some kind of professional if possible. Same applies to many problems people put on here. Yes there is some good advice, but honestly it's often drowned out by complete and utter shite. Yes I'm sure I'll get a kicking for this but it just amazes me what people say to other, sometimes desperate, people on here.

Can you give some examples of the bad kind of advice you are referring to?

GP’s don’t have magic wands! Unfortunately referrals take time. I’ve had some excellent advice on here!

No I don't want to be specific because then it would be a TAAT and the point is it's across the whole of MN. The example I gave is generic and of course gps don't have magic wands.

I think there IS some good advice and I did say that but there is also a huge amount of bad and wrong advice.

The legal advice makes me laugh.

To be honest it’s something else on here that annoys me on here the most.

Poster asks a question-they get lots of completely contrasting replies in response.

One person replies and says-‘I am qualified in this field and some of the advice given on here is irresponsible and dangerous’ yet don’t go on to say which bits they think are dangerous or give any helpful views of their own!

I've come on here for advice and support about a few things and people have been really helpful. It's no different to googling for help but usually it's tried and tested by the mn'er.

I wouldn't ask about somthing life and death though more nappy rash remedies or Bf support.

What makes me laugh on here is the repeated calls for some women to leave their husband/boyfriend etc.. because they called them a bad word or shouted at them.
Ffs I’d have been divorced years ago ! Dh and I shout at each other sometimes but that’s because we are both stubborn sods but not because we don’t love each other or respect each other ...

I agree. Some of the advice is really cliched. I have also had some shockingly bad advice from professionals too, which is often how we get into such a mess

YANBU at all.

"Your insurance is invalid if you have no MOT" is one of my recent favourite bollocks urban myths* - supported by a link to some kind of money advice website which is also talking bollocks.

Mostly - there appear to be a very small number of tinpot insurers who make this stipulation.

I get unreasonably irritated by replies that start with "Head teacher here" or whatever. a) because it sounds really pompous and b) the poster could be nothing of the kind, yet everyone's supposed to bow down to their superior knowledge.

I think the legal ones can be outright damaging at times! Fair enough if you’re a solicitor/law professional but a lot of people offer advice based on what they think they know/saw on telly once. Stuff like ‘you don’t have to pay for that tax/bill if..’ etc.

Yeah there’s so mad advice on MN. I do sometimes wonder if people are sometimes just seeing what’s the maddest thing that they can advise and someone might do.

Basically if you want relationships advice you will be told your dh is a cunt and you need to ltb.

One tiny thing happens In a family? "Go non contact" "Cut them out of your life"

All this advice makes me a little bit

There's a lot of call 101/social services advice which 99 times out of 100 is bollocks. Lots of LTB over utter trivia. The worst of all though was to send a new baby card to the mother of a stillborn baby and remember its birthday every year. I'd have murdered anyone who did that.

I also think the relationship stuff can go the other way too, a poster can write about how her DH is constantly rude, disrespectful, doesn’t life a finger etc and verbally abusive and one poster will say ‘hmmm are you sure he’s not just having a stressful time at work? It does sound like you nag a bit’

If you want professional advice, pay a professional. If you want a random selection of musings and ponderings and lived experiences, ask mumsnet. If you don't like it then you're free to ignore it. What else are you expecting?
