Im absolutely disgusted at this and it shows how far the stigma against social housing tenants has gone.

@doubleshotespresso I can understand your anger. This hits very close to home for me as well. But regardless of heir stupidity and depravity, burning alive is something I wouldn’t wish on them. That would be even more depraved.

HelenaDove · 05/11/2018 19:49

Ironically if they end up losing their jobs they might well be in need of social housing.

@choochoothepanda

Yes please. Spell out exactly how being a tennant is a hate crime qualifier. Feel free to link to the legislation.

This is being a tennant.

The first comment underneath my OP illustrates the "othering" that leads to things like what these depraved people did

People like @TheQueef are part of the problem.

I don’t think it’s a hate crime. Public order offence perhaps, but it depends where they were.

Krouse64 · 05/11/2018 19:51

I lost a family member in the fire and to me I really don’t care what the thinking behind this was. It’s sick and evil.

Cheby · 05/11/2018 19:52

I agree with some PP; I think this is a sickening and disgusting act but I don’t think they have committed an offence. I do think they should lose their jobs, if they have them, for bringing their employers into disrepute.

I know every story from Grenfell is tragic, but I think the individuals responsible for this act should listen to the testimony of Paulos Tekle, who spoke at the enquiry last week. He lost his 5 year old when the family tried to escape from the tower. If those idiots can listen to what happened to this family and not realise what they ha e done is so grossly unacceptable, then I genuinely don’t think there is any hope left for them as human beings.

butterflysugarbaby · 05/11/2018 19:52

@henryismyfriend

Ignore the people who are badly educated about people in social housing.

There are always a few ignoramuses on threads about social housing who think everyone in social housing gets their house free - (even those who are working!)

Some are even dumb enough to think their tax pays for said social housing.

Gotta laugh at their extreme ignorance.

RoboticMary · 05/11/2018 19:53

I’m very sorry for your loss @Krouse64 Flowers

Akire · 05/11/2018 19:54

Channel 4 showed this on news after BBC decided to much. Bad enough people died but there were kids there as well it’s beyond belief.

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/nov/05/police-appeal-video-mock-up-grenfell-tower-burned?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Tweet

Police have appealed for information after a group of people burned a model of Grenfell Tower and laughed as they pretended to be trapped residents who died in the disaster.

A video posted online showed a large cardboard model marked “Grenfell Tower” being placed over a fire in what appeared to be someone’s back garden, in which an English flag was mounted on a pole.

Bystanders could be heard mockingly saying, “Help me, help me!” and “Jump out the window!” One of them waggled a cutout of a person in a window, several of which appeared to have been coloured brown. To laughter, one person said “Stay in your flat, we are coming to get you”, an apparent reference to the stay-put policy that may have cost lives in the fire on 14 June 2017.

Someone else can be heard saying: “That’s what happens when they don’t pay their rent.”

It is not known when or where the video was recorded. The participants have southern English accents and one of their faces can be seen reasonably clearly.

Survivors of the blaze described the burning of the cardboard model as a “sickening act of hate” and urged the police to investigate it as a potential hate crime.

A spokesperson for the campaign group Justice4Grenfell said the video had “caused great alarm and distress”, and added: “We are disgusted and shocked at the inhumanity and callousness of those involved in this video.”

Theresa May tweeted: “To disrespect those who lost their lives at Grenfell Tower, as well as their families and loved ones, is utterly unacceptable.

The government issued a statement condemning the video “in the strongest terms” and urging people not to share it on social media. The communities secretary, James Brokenshire, said: “At a time when the bereaved and survivors are giving testimony to the Grenfell Inquiry and reliving the unimaginable horror of that tragedy, it beggars belief that anyone should do this. Those responsible for this repugnant material are beneath contempt.”

Sajid Javid, the home secretary, called the video “shameful” and Labour’s Diane Abbott described it as “hateful”. Matt Wrack, the general secretary of the Fire Brigades Union, labelled the perpetrators “thick numbskulls”.

Issuing a plea for information, the Scotland Yard commander Stuart Cundy, who is leading the investigation into the Grenfell fire, said he was “appalled by the callous nature of the video posted online” and described it as “vile”.

“The Met’s Grenfell Tower investigation team is taking this matter very seriously,” he said. “Any offences that have been committed will be fully investigated. If you have information about this gathering, or were present, please contact police via 101 or @MetCC.

Natasha Elcock of the community group Grenfell United described the video as “disgusting”. “Not only is it extremely upsetting to survivors and people who lost family, it’s hateful and offensive to everyone that has been affected by the tragic events of that night,” she said.

“We try to keep our focus on the thousands of people across the country who supported us in the weeks after the fire, the hundreds that walk with us every month on the 14th, and everyone who is backing our fight for justice and change.”

It is disgusting. And disturbing how little empathy some people feel. I am wary of the "hate crime" thing that gets flung about though. Surely a hate crime involves actually doing something to someone based on an irrational hatred of their race or sexuality or whatever.

They had cut outs of brown people burning in the model. Are you seriously saying this wasn't a hate crime?

HelenaDove · 05/11/2018 19:56

@Krouse64 Im sorry for your loss Thanks Thanks

Bejazzled · 05/11/2018 19:56

Fekko you are entirely correct. What school they went to isn't relevant at all, some people have to bring their own baggage into every conversation unfortunately.

FekkoThePenguin · 05/11/2018 19:58

I haven’t seen the video - I’d get too angry - so I have no idea if they were braying hoorays or anything else. I can’t be bothered with people making sweeping generalisations - those people died horribly. Trapped and terrified.

AbsentmindedWoman · 05/11/2018 19:59

How can these people think this is funny??

What is wrong with these people? How can their empathy be so stunted??

I thought the first comment by @TheQueef was ironic?

Krouse64 · 05/11/2018 20:00

Thank you all this has broken me today, we will never get over it. But the one thing that kept us going was the love and compassion shown to us by the grenfell community and the rest of the world. Today these scum have taken that away.

FekkoThePenguin · 05/11/2018 20:02

They have taken nothing. They are currently cacking their pants.

The bastards are the minority.

HelenaDove · 05/11/2018 20:03

@Krouse64 There are a lot of people who support the Grenfell survivors and those of the wider area who support you in your fight for justice. Thanks

Thankfully, because of all the publicity these racist, bastards will be identified very quickly.

All right thinking people will be disgusted by their behaviour and I hope they arent allowed to forget what they’ve done, for a very long time.

LizzieSiddal · 05/11/2018 20:05

Krouse don’t let them take it away from youFlowers. The vast majority of people have huge amounts of sympathy and anger about what happened at Grenfell.x

Antigon · 05/11/2018 20:06

@Choochoothepanda

the remark saying its what happens when you dont pay your rent tells me its driven by hatred of tenants

Okkkaaayyyy.

So I'll ask again, what hate crime do you think has been committed here?

Choo, not ONE of your posts acknowledges that the model had cut outs of BROWN people burning in the fire. There was also a woman with a hijab.

This was a hate crime and if you can't acknowledge that then you are a dog whistle racist.

WTBE · 05/11/2018 20:09

I see this earlier and was shocked. You can't even call it "dark sense of humour" like how some on Facebook are describing it Hmm The amount of detail they put into this, the vile commentary in the video. Sickening.

Even if it isn't a crime, I hope people remember their faces and make their life a misery.
