Hello, we've got new neighbours again...

Next door is let and we own. Last year's tenants were fine but one of them played the piano all the damn time and was always the same tune over and over again. Whilst this was very very annoying, I figured they were learning and practising. These tenants have now been replaced with some really annoying, plain noisy people.

I have an 8 month old baby and his room is next to their daughter's room. In the evenings they are really loud. Is it bad to put a note through their door? Or should I try and speak to the landlord instead? I don't want yet another year of putting up with someone else's noise all the bloody time.

Have you spoken to them directly?

Speak to them politely first- notes and speaking to the landlord are the later steps. Is it unreasonable noise or just paper thin walls?

What kind of noise?

Is it normal household noise or partying noise?

Walls are thick but they seem to shout! Normal household noise but just very very loud!

I don't really want to speak to them face to face because I'm a massive scaredy cat basically...

I'd speak to them directly as well. They might not realise how their noise is impacting on you.

Oh man... I'm way more keen on the cowardly anon note through the door... maybe I'll just do nothing instead

If too scared to speak directly to them, do a note - it’s far from ideal but 100x better than going straight to landlord!

Don't do an anon note. It's upsetting and if they don't realise they're impacting you makes them feel they need to be suspicious/ apologetic of everyone. You only need to be nice but honest

Of course you should speak to them first, they are not going to take kindly to you if you complain to their landlord. Does your baby make any noise, she might not yet but give it a few year and you might be the ones being loud

I would start by introducing yourself and asking nicely if they’d watch the noise levels in that room as sound carries through the wall and disturbs the baby. You’re much more likely to get a reasonable response that way than with a note.

Maybe invite them round for a friendly cup of tea and cake, then tell them the history of the place and how the walls are wafer thin...

It's normal noise - just louder than is comfortable. They're not having deliberately debauched parties or being deliberately provocative. Just go and have a word.

Ok, what shall I say? I'm afraid I never come across well on first impression.. I'm slightly awkward I think if you don't know me.. and they aren't English...

I'm on the fence here. Only because we had a flat next to a lovely couple who then had a baby. And they were lovely but man, the teething period seemed to go on for ever. Many woken nights. I know they had it worse than us but I wouldn't be too quick to get into "you're so noisy" competition when you might be about to hit that stage...

An anonymous note? Seriously?

Their daughter is way older but has a bedtime of like 10/11pm. They're drying her hair now with the sodding hairdryer

I recently posted a thread about my asshole neighbours that don't know when bedtime is. The noise is unreal. They've this week bought a dog too, new rant thread coming up from me shortly!

I am a coward and don't want to talk to them either, plus they don't come across the kind of people that would make any attempt to be quiet & would probably do the opposite instead. The only reason I haven't reported to council is because when you sell your house you have to tell buyers if you have filed any noise complaints, if so, I'd be on complaint 3 to the council so far, they only moved in in August 

I would speak to them directly , as notes can seem rude no matter how well wrote . DO NOT apologises for bringing the issue up,
Sentences written or spoken that start ' I am sorry but - would you excuses me, sound to simpering and you may not get the desired results but also don't go in all guns blazing.

May be invite them in for a brew and explain that the walls are thin and ask them to keep the noise down after x time , pick a time half a hour before you actually want them to go quiet to give them a chance to wind down what ever they are doing.

If they've only just moved in you could take them a housewarming card and a plant or something and after initial pleasantries say you're sorry but the noise from their upstairs rooms has woken up your baby a few times, you know kids can be loud but they know how it is with a baby etc etc. Hopefully they are decent people and will be apologetic and try and make a change

The note isn't really going to be anonymous is it when they will work out it's either you or the other neighbours on the other side complaining about the noise.
We have really thick walls. However, the chimney stack is atrocious for carrying sound,

Noise is only seen as a problem after 11pm. What I'm dealing with is untill around 1am, sometimes being woken at 3am with them screaming at each other! Thin walls are a nightmare at any time of day though, I heard ours singing very badly yesterday in the afternoon hahaha but those ones you just have to laugh at!
