Which cheeses are cool at the moment?

Cool probably doesn't mean cool anymore, god I feel old

At a weekend away with some of my most hipster (but in a good nearly-40 way, not a twatty 23yr old way) friends and three of them independently said their favourite current cheese is Comte. This can't be coincidence, is comte having a moment? Which other cheeses are cool?

My personal favourite is castello blue. I have no idea how hipster this is or not but I think it is on a par with blue nun

Seriously????

Stormzyandme · 08/09/2018 22:19

Dairylea

ShinyMe · 08/09/2018 22:19

All cheese is wonderful and fabulous and cool.

Oysterbabe · 08/09/2018 22:20

I've never heard of compt, I'm very uncool though. You can't beat some fried halloumi or a baked camembert imo.

Oysterbabe · 08/09/2018 22:21

*comte not compt.
What is it?

RiddleMeThis2018 · 08/09/2018 22:23

I always think you can’t beat a nice roulé, but I doubt that’s ever been a cool cheese.

Namethecat · 08/09/2018 22:24

Yes Comte is very,very nice.

LARLARLAND · 08/09/2018 22:24

You need to get out more.

positivity123 · 08/09/2018 22:24

Colton Bassett Blue Stilton and Vignotte.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 08/09/2018 22:24

Any cheese is cool if stuck on a cocktail stick in a pineapple.

borntobequiet · 08/09/2018 22:25

Or kept in the fridge.

crumpet · 08/09/2018 22:26

Pecorino, eaten with pears

JontyDoggle37 · 08/09/2018 22:26

Riddle Roulé was cool in the early eighties, I remember it being ‘the thing’ served at my parents dinner parties with Hovis Biscuits for Cheese.
I think ‘trendy’ cheeses now are very locally produced ones.

SilverySurfer · 08/09/2018 22:27

I'll stick with my White Stilton and assume it must become cool at some point.

Lookatmemeow · 08/09/2018 22:27

Brillat Savarin

BuntyII · 08/09/2018 22:27

I've seen Tom Kerridge AND Jamie Oliver use Comte so yes I think it is having a moment. It's just the new Gruyere isn't it.

I like Cornish cruncher myself. And sometimes primula in a sandwich.

Pringlecat · 08/09/2018 22:28

To all those who haven't heard of comté - if you like cheddar, you'll probably like it too. It's a lovely hard French cheese with a similar texture.

I was once invited at the last minute to a open air concert / picnic type thing. I was the other side of London so I hopped on a train, but by the time I got to the station nearest the concert the shops had shut. So I ended up buying the picnic, to be shared with some lovely Waitrose-y middle class people i didn’t know, at a local late night convenience store. They all had crackers and organic goats cheese and I had Pringles and Dairylea.

So...not that. Maybe get any old cheese but a really nice chutney? I’ve got a really nice one from Waitrose with figs and olives. It’s yummy.

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 08/09/2018 22:29

I have no idea. But if I could choose I would like to try all the new Russian cheeses that have appeared as a result of economic sanctions (Russia couldn't import European cheese so they started making their own).

Not sure if that is cool or sad Smile

vanillapieandicecream · 08/09/2018 22:31

Comté is a very famous cheese in France. It's nice, but as always there are varying degrees of flavor/expense and it can go to eye watering prices.

You can also get some really lovely English cheeses that we pay a fortune for in Europe. I crave apple smoked cheddar and snowdonia amber mist.

If you really want to dazzle them with continental cheeses, get a raclette or make a mont d'or. Tête de Moine was available in Lidl for a while, DM was beside herself with excitement.

Davros · 08/09/2018 22:33

Please buy british cheese, it's excellent. Look at Neal's Yard. Comté is nice but nothing that special

Duchessgummybuns · 08/09/2018 22:34

I always liked Brie but I’m now told it’s a wasteman cheese 🤔

So I’m summation I don’t know Grin

needyourlovingtouch · 08/09/2018 22:34

Mmmmmm cheese

Queenofmyownheart · 08/09/2018 22:35

I had no idea until this thread that specific cheeses were fashionable 😂 I'm lactose intolerant but I bloody love a good Stilton and a baked Camembert 😂 other than that I like a roule but is it fashionable? 😂

Rebecca36 · 08/09/2018 22:35

Ones in my fridge are pretty cool atm.
