Cool probably doesn't mean cool anymore, god I feel old

At a weekend away with some of my most hipster (but in a good nearly-40 way, not a twatty 23yr old way) friends and three of them independently said their favourite current cheese is Comte. This can't be coincidence, is comte having a moment? Which other cheeses are cool?

My personal favourite is castello blue. I have no idea how hipster this is or not but I think it is on a par with blue nun

*I thought vegan cheese is cool now?

Made out of cashew nuts or something confused

It's what the hipsters around here eat.*

My vegan boss bought some online a couple of Christmases ago. When we were all back after Christmas, someone asked her what the "nut cheese" was like.

"Nut cheese?" she replied. "Tasted more like knob cheese. It was disgusting".

Red Leicester is one of my favourites. Then goats cheese, don't care which brand.

Until this thread, I had no idea that cheese snobbery existed! Love it Grin

imstartingtogetfitnow · 09/09/2018 09:33

Thank you so much for this thread, I have just spent an hour browsing cheese online, suddenly a cheese wheel seems like a priority buy... Grin

LittleBookofCalm · 09/09/2018 09:34

i hate goats cheese,
hate parmesan.

my online order of halloumi for several weeks has failed to deliver.
so i think halloumi is popular
and feta
i like Gouda but that is probably due to shopping in Aldi

ShatnersBassoon · 09/09/2018 09:37

and just cries out for a glass of the driest white wine by way of accompaniment

glueandstick · 09/09/2018 09:42

Bluesheep8 · 09/09/2018 09:42

Cathedral city Grin

Shockers · 09/09/2018 09:43

Do vegans consume knob cheese..?

Garstang Blue and Blacksticks Blue are my favourites!

Truckingonandon · 09/09/2018 10:01

Rhonda up thread said....and it's vegetarian too. Well isn't all cheese vegetarian? Unless someone squirrels some bacon bits in it, obsv.

I'm a huge fan of St Agur or I was until i bought a couple of packs from sainsbos last week and it made me gag. It had crossed the line into full on mould and I really should have returned it but couldn't be arsed.

serbska · 09/09/2018 10:03

Comte is my fav and has been for years. I must be super cool.

sexnotgender · 09/09/2018 10:06

Cheese like this is amazing!

Which cheeses are cool at the moment?
LoniceraJaponica · 09/09/2018 10:08

The Tyne Chease Comapny is the best effort at vegan cheese I have tried so far, but it is expensive.

LARLARLAND · 09/09/2018 10:10

I think this is pretty cool and Snowdonian cheese is possibly the most delicious cheese I have ever tasted.

No hipsters worthy of the name will be impressed by imported cheese (think of the food miles!), especially not anything from a supermarket, made in a factory, or with a "brand"!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 09/09/2018 10:14

I have a weakness for a ripe Reblochon. The rest of my family don’t and made me eat the one I bought on holiday in France outside on the terrace.

scaryteacher · 09/09/2018 10:15

Montgomery cheddar is the best, along with a Yorkshire blue or a Shropshire Blue. Much to my delight, the deli near me in Belgium stocked Shropshire Blue for a while. The Montgomery is what I bring back to Belgium, along with as much Coastal or Moo cheddar from Sainsbury as I can stuff in the car.

I am looking forward to moving back to UK next year and having access to the cheese shop and the small local producers.

TheSheepofWallSt · 09/09/2018 10:20

Comte had a real moment a few years ago- I was obsessed with it after a trip to France. then a pop up devoted to Comte opened in Borough Market. It might still be there-
Comte is delicious especiallj well aged.

I’m over manchego unless it comes with a good membranillo.

There are some really good french soft blue cheeses at the moment. Otherwise I’m enjoying trad British cheeses just now- Stilton with pears; salty cheddar with fruitcake.

I’m overly invested in cheese Blush

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 09/09/2018 10:21

Ohh yes Shropshire blue...

Motoko · 09/09/2018 10:43

Well isn't all cheese vegetarian? Unless someone squirrels some bacon bits in it, obsv.

No, not all cheese is veggie. Animal rennet is used a lot in cheese making, so unless they use a veggie rennet or culture to start the process, it's not veggie.

LoniceraJaponica · 09/09/2018 10:49

More and more cheeses these days are made with non animal rennet. It is cheaper and the cheesemaker can sell to everyone who likes cheese.

There are some cheeses that have to be made with animal rennet or they can't be called by that name. Parmesan is one that springs to mind. I get irritated by restaurants who provide "vegetarian" dishes made with Parmesan or who use pesto made with Parmesan. A chef should know better.

BareBelliedSneetch · 09/09/2018 10:58

Brillat savarin was my Dads favourite 40 yrs ago. I love that it’s suddenly cool and trendy. Just like the sliders he was wearing at the same time Grin

wowfudge · 09/09/2018 11:03

Just on British cheeses - if you go into any supermarket there will be about 25 different Cheddars (20 of which have come from nowhere near Somerset, but that's another discussion) and a stack of processed cheese from cheese strings to squeezy cheese and every abomination in between. There will also be a selection of vile British cheeses doctored with fruit and other stuff mixed into it. Then there will be about 20 different foreign cheeses.

I think that small producers must struggle to supply in the quantities supermarkets demand and that means we don't get to try some really interesting British cheeses without going to a specialist shop, a farmers' market or a food fair.

YouWereRight · 09/09/2018 11:06

Somebody called me hipster for buying edam about a month ago. Apparently it's deeply uncool, so I must be trying to bring it back Confused

wowfudge · 09/09/2018 11:09

Edam seems like a very 70s cheese to me. Not sure why I think that.
