Which cheeses are cool at the moment?

Cool probably doesn't mean cool anymore, god I feel old

At a weekend away with some of my most hipster (but in a good nearly-40 way, not a twatty 23yr old way) friends and three of them independently said their favourite current cheese is Comte. This can't be coincidence, is comte having a moment? Which other cheeses are cool?

My personal favourite is castello blue. I have no idea how hipster this is or not but I think it is on a par with blue nun

Disappointed that there aren't more British cheeses championed here. I go to a lot of food festivals/farmers markets, and we have an abundance of delicious cheeses that are as good as, if not better than, cheeses from elsewhere.

Aged goudas are having a moment where I live.

I tried some really nice Gouda in the Netherlands (they don’t really eat Edam in case anyone was wondering. I think Edam is like a Nana cheese.) The only places here i can get a nice bit of Gouda are the Polish deli counters, which are also worth a look for other cheeses you wouldn’t get in a supermarket. (And aside from cheese they do amazing crisps.)

Brillat savarin is beautiful. I didn't know Vallages is Vignotte - thanks for that pps.

CasperGutman · 09/09/2018 08:34

You can't beat a good cheddar!

gouldscheddar.co.uk/product/farmhouse-extra-tasty-cheddar-cheese/

But to impress a real hipster you surely need something really obscure from just round the corner. Some artisanal single Gloucester, or stinking nugget of ash and mould-encrusted goat product you got from the fabulous lady in the farmers' market. If they've never heard of it, and secretly think it tastes like old socks, you're onto a winner.

Port salou is about as sophisticated as I get at dinner parties

I also love Boursin

ShatnersBassoon · 09/09/2018 08:36

If Comte and cheddar had a fight, cheddar would win. And everyone would cheer.

Grin Oh yes.

People like to try new, foreign things because it seems sophisticated, but really they'd all prefer a bit of Black Bomber.

happysunr1se · 09/09/2018 08:39

I like beenleigh blue, I love any kind of goats cheese and anything from the snowdonia cheese company especially black bomber which I think is the best cheddar on the market at the moment.

We make great cheeses in the UK.

I'm thinking about getting a subscription from the cheeseshed at the moment!

My wanky hipster friends have been banging on about cambozola recently. Cross between Camembert and Gorgonzola.

I’m surprised anyone who sees themselves as hipster would be banging on about a cheese you’ve been able to buy in Tesco for about five years.

LoniceraJaponica · 09/09/2018 08:43

Cambodia has been around for a lot longer than that.

SuburbanRhonda · 09/09/2018 08:46

Great typo, lonicera

You can't just cross cheeses to create a mongrel then charge big bucks for it. Cheeses are not dogs. Is nothing sacred?

SuburbanRhonda · 09/09/2018 08:53

You can't just cross cheeses to create a mongrel then charge big bucks for it.

They already have.

Anyway, just off to the farm shop to get a wedge of Montagnolo Affiné - that’s my calories sorted for today!

SpookyMuldersMum · 09/09/2018 08:53

SuburbanRhonda They’re probably trying to be ironic.

bokkleorandoove · 09/09/2018 08:56

Brillat savarin - I wanted to try it when i saw it on Sunday brunch a year ago and it's just appeared in my local M&S this week.

UrsulaPandress · 09/09/2018 08:59

Been eating Cambazola for years.

My current fave is Coastal Bite. Only found in ' variety packs' in Tesco so I spend about £8 for a small bit of heaven.

MissFitton · 09/09/2018 08:59

All cheese is good although I have no idea what is cool. I'm quite fond of the mini-Brie with garlic you get in Aldi which shows you exactly where I am on the hipster scale.

This thread though has alerted me to the possibility of cheese subscription for which I'm grateful (even if my food budget isn't)

I too want to hear more of the brass band trip to Blackpool. Grin

UrsulaPandress · 09/09/2018 09:00

Boulette D'Avesnes takes some eating and beating.

LoniceraJaponica · 09/09/2018 09:02

Blooming autocorrect
Cambozola

Oysterbabe · 09/09/2018 09:05

What's Blackpool like? DH has convinced me to book a weekend there so the kids can see the illuminations. We'll be safely back in our out of town airbnb before the hen and stags kick off. I was just a little concerned that it has a reputation for being a bit shit.

UrsulaPandress · 09/09/2018 09:09

It smells of shit.

But you have take it for what is it. Park at fleetwwod end and get a tram.

8mileeminem · 09/09/2018 09:15

Manchego

ShrodingersSturdyPyjamas · 09/09/2018 09:16

Comte is what Brits buy in France when they realise mild cheddar is not available.

FurryDogMother · 09/09/2018 09:17

I agree with PPs about Raclette - it's not just a cheese, it's an activity! Also having a Morbier Ash moment - a far more subtle cheese than I usually go for (Stinking Bishop is my all time favourite). I've also fallen in love with the classic Roquefort/Sauternes pairing - or Roquefort and Ravenhill Sable grapes from Ocado if not drinking. Looking forward to our local cheese shop's seasonal Stilton soaked in port. Saint Vernier and a Brie de Meaux are currently in my cheese box. I'm a bit of a cheese nut, really. Another favourite is the Great British Cheese Company's Lime and Chilli Cheddar - but that's a sort of secret pleasure! Yes, I'm aware I'm a cheese snob. No, I don't care :)

LakieLady · 09/09/2018 09:18

MissusGeneHunt Pont L'Eveque is my absolute favourite! Bloody fabulous flavour, and well worth the fumes emitted every time you open the fridge.

I love Comte too, and often use it instead of Gruyere in pommes dauphinois.

For a home-grown cheese, I recommend Old Sussex. It's readily available round my way, but further afield you can get it by mail order.

The best cheese I've ever had was actually Belgian, bought in a village market in France, and is called melange de St Hubert. It's made from a blend of sheep and cows' milk, and just cries out for a glass of the driest white wine by way of accompaniment.

The nicest butter I've ever had was Belgian, too, in a small hotel in Bruges. I think the Belgians are very mean keeping such good dairy stuff to themselves. Grin

neffall · 09/09/2018 09:26

I still want to know why Brie is wasteman cheese. And why Philadelphia don't make that chocolate cheese any more Sad
