Which cheeses are cool at the moment?

Cool probably doesn't mean cool anymore, god I feel old

At a weekend away with some of my most hipster (but in a good nearly-40 way, not a twatty 23yr old way) friends and three of them independently said their favourite current cheese is Comte. This can't be coincidence, is comte having a moment? Which other cheeses are cool?

My personal favourite is castello blue. I have no idea how hipster this is or not but I think it is on a par with blue nun

"We import 2/3 of our cheese.
That. Is. A Disgrace."

I agree. Why?

AdaColeman · 09/09/2018 18:18

Brillat Savarin ~ was a previous poster searching for this? I can't find the post now, but the cheese is available from Ocado. It's on offer just now with some other French cheeses, but you HAVE to buy two! Smile

scaryteacher · 09/09/2018 18:21

www.countrycheeses.co.uk/ is where I buy my cheese from when I'm home. Not a non UK cheese in sight.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/09/2018 18:53

I can't believe so few PPs have selected goat cheese - surely the food of the gods, along with Bleu d'Auvergne (even better than roquefort and much cheaper)

A small recommendation for anyone who visits Calais: get yourself along the coast to lovely Boulogne and visit Phillippe Olivier for a real cheese heaven experience (He's got a place in Calais now too, but it's nowhere near as good)

UrsulaPandress · 09/09/2018 19:04

I'm in Sicily are there are some lovely cheeses. But can't wait to get home for a nice bit of crumbly Lancashire. Or Wensleydale. Cheeeeeese Grommit.

Thelastredwinegum · 09/09/2018 19:18

Absolutely love Lincolnshire Poacher vintage or double barrel 🤤

ArtisanBaps · 09/09/2018 19:43

@puzzledlady@ I had some St James recently and it was absolutely fab!
Also love a proper vintage Gouda, not the young stuff
Snowdonia smoked from Booth’s
Comté is my favourite French cheese

Agustarella · 09/09/2018 20:11

A third of our cheddar is imported from Ireland, apparently.

Goat's cheese and milk make me feel really ill, sort of tight chest and ill at ease , l don't know why though

Oysterbabe · 09/09/2018 20:23

Goats cheese is a bit hit and miss for me.
My parents always kept goats and once a year we would borrow a billy called Spicer for 2 weeks to father that years kids. He STANK. Every now and again I'll have some goats cheese that tastes like Spicer smelled and I want to vom.

SuburbanRhonda · 09/09/2018 20:23

Makes the house smell like a mass grave, obviously.

How would you know? Grin

Branleuse · 09/09/2018 20:24

I quite like aged comte, and also aged gouda.

Surely its just what you like

Mrsmadevans · 09/09/2018 20:24

Just googled it can be possible to be intolerant of Goat and Sheep milk and Cows milk to be fine. I will stop trying them out now .

waxy1 · 09/09/2018 20:27

Goats’ cheese is too goaty for me. I get the Spicer story.

Sheeps’ cheese is great!

CandleWithHair · 09/09/2018 20:30

Have not RTFT but just wanted to say this is my favourite thread title of the day.

I love cheese

ShatnersBassoon · 09/09/2018 20:30

I agree that goat cheese tastes of what hormonal goat smells like. Rutting, pregnant and nursing goats have a very distinctive smell about them, which is not at all toothsome.

waxy1 · 09/09/2018 20:33

Davros · 09/09/2018 20:37

oysterbabe I love the story of stinky Spicer, any photos?

MrsPnut · 09/09/2018 20:40

I love Lincolnshire Poacher double barrel too. www.thecheesesociety.co.uk/product/double-barrel-lincolnshire-poacher/
The cheese society is my idea of a fab day out.

longtompot · 09/09/2018 21:04

Mmmm cheese. Sadly shouldn't eat it as it upsets my tum. But I love a creamy ripe brie, not too smelly, on thin slices of not quite ripe pear.
Also like a really mature cheddar. Or slices of parmesan. We have some smoked goats cheese which is gorgeous. Shropshire blue is nice too. My dhs gran got us into Lancashire Lee/LeaToaster from her local cheese shop.
A cheese pairing I discovered by accident today. I had a piece, well, pre sliced slice of Lidl Gouda and a bit of homemade sticky ginger cake, and had a bit of each at the same time and it was really nice!

Davros · 09/09/2018 21:39

Cheese and peanut butter goes well but I wouldn't do it with decent cheese

Delatron · 09/09/2018 21:53

Burrata is having a moment in fashionable NYC restaurants. Never even heard of it until I went over there.

I love Black Bomber cheddar and manchego with a drizzle of honey.

GrumpyOldMare · 09/09/2018 21:59

Being a Somerset lass,it's got to be proper Cheddar,as in cave aged Cheddar from Cheddar. Or from Wookey Hole. Can't beat it. With Thatchers or scrumpy and pickled onions.

Blow this thread...I have the Thatchers and pickled onions but no Cheddar and it's a Sunday evening!
