Which cheeses are cool at the moment?

Cool probably doesn't mean cool anymore, god I feel old

At a weekend away with some of my most hipster (but in a good nearly-40 way, not a twatty 23yr old way) friends and three of them independently said their favourite current cheese is Comte. This can't be coincidence, is comte having a moment? Which other cheeses are cool?

My personal favourite is castello blue. I have no idea how hipster this is or not but I think it is on a par with blue nun

Halloumi is so overrated

Drizzledrozzle · 08/09/2018 22:36

I agree, I definitely need to get out more! Are you offering to babysit? If so yes please, so long as you don't eat my blue castello

I think comte tastes a little bit like slightly sweaty foot. Not in a bad way, it's passable, but not on my top ten cheeseboard list

I do have a secret love for dairylea but I've name changed for this thread so you'll never out me and my dairylea love

White Stilton is fine but I'm not so keen on the fruity ones

Roule I used to love but I think my more mature palate finds it a little unsophisticated.

Pecorino - see comte comments

Savarin I've never tried. Is it available in normal shops? Should I try some?

Positivity and oyster yes, you can both join my cheese gang

😂 at dairylea ^

What does brie being a wasteman cheese mean?!! Feeling anxiety about beloved brie

abbey44 · 08/09/2018 22:44

Vignotte's my favourite (or Vallages from Waitrose) - I've got a big piece in the fridge that I keep cutting lumps off. But cheese of any description is good. Love it.

Drizzledrozzle · 08/09/2018 22:48

What are those like abbey? The names excite me and I live near a Waitrose 🧀🍞🧀🧀🍞🧀🍞🧀🧀

Comte is so ovah, dahlink. It's all about the raw milk cheese now.

Actually, I have no idea. But it kind of sounds like I know what I'm talking about doesn't it? Grin

Drizzledrozzle · 08/09/2018 22:50

If you really want to dazzle them with continental cheeses, get a raclette or make a mont d'or. Tête de Moine was available in Lidl for a while, DM was beside herself with excitement

Tbh I want to dazzle myself, so tell me more! What are mont d'or and tete de moins like please?

I believed you smeg, then I actually felt disappointed my friends weren't as hip as I think they are. Then at your second paragraph I felt relief they still might be hip

I like comté, but it is basically the French version of cheddar. Typically, we'll buy a load of cheese on the first day of a French holiday, and the comté will be finished first.

AdaColeman · 08/09/2018 22:55

They are probably mentioning Comte to remind everyone that they spent the summer in France.

My favourite ATM is pecorino with truffle from Sicily.

Theimpossiblegirl · 08/09/2018 22:56

Living in Somerset we do like to do a local cheeseboard if entertaining, there's such a lot of choice and we can get good chutneys and cider easily too.

To be honest though, I love all cheese.

leghairdontcare · 08/09/2018 22:56

Manchego is the coolest cheese I eat. Otherwise i just buy big lumps of mature Cheddar.

BonnieF · 08/09/2018 22:57

Primula cheese spread, but only if it comes in a squeezy tube, like toothpaste.

All the ‘cool’ kids are into it.

AwdBovril · 08/09/2018 22:58

Casu Marzu. Or Dairylea, as a PP suggested.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 08/09/2018 22:58

When I was a kid my DM used to chuck in the rind of a Parmesan in her homemade pasta sauce - simmered for hours it would soften and take on the flavour of the sauce. She’d let me have it after she’d finished cooking (I’d whine at her relentlessly) and I’d nibble it and shove it in my cheek like a hamster for hours. Grin Sigh, good times

puzzledlady · 08/09/2018 22:58

Stinking bishop
Mimolette
Spenwood
St James

And if your really adventurous- love ewe.

Me and my husband belong to a few cheese clubs :)

puzzledlady · 08/09/2018 22:59

Comte is nice - but a little bit boring. IMO of course Smile

BareBelliedSneetch · 08/09/2018 23:00

A good comte isn’t a patch on a good cheddar. The French have some amazing cheeses, but nothing with the versatility of cheddar.

Tomme fleurs sauvages is where it should be at. So pretty Grin

MrsChollySawcutt · 08/09/2018 23:00

Bizarre that the hipsters are buying French Comte which is a poor mans cheddar.

Our chic foodie French friends always ask us to bring hard cheeses like Cheddar, Wensleydale and Cheshire when we visit! I took them to Neal's Yard for cheese last time they were in London and they were practically orgasmic.

MissusGeneHunt · 08/09/2018 23:01

Love Yarg, for a 'home' cheese, but for the 'away' fixture it's Pont Leveque every time... Yummy!!

AornisHades · 08/09/2018 23:04

Nooo. I buy comte for DH at Xmas. For the cheese board not his present. Don't cause a shortage!

LoniceraJaponica · 08/09/2018 23:04

Black Bomber from The Snowdonia Cheese Company is delicious.

SuburbanRhonda · 08/09/2018 23:04

Not sure about cool, but this cheese is the dog’s bollocks - and it’s vegetarian, so I can eat it. And I do.

Which cheeses are cool at the moment?
footphobic · 08/09/2018 23:04

My current favourite is Montagnolo Affine, a gorgeous soft blue cheese. No idea if it’s cool though. I love Yarg too, recently DH was supposed to pick some up when shopping and I was a bit annoyed as he accidentally got garlic yarg by mistake...it was actually bloody lovely.
