Which cheeses are cool at the moment?

Cool probably doesn't mean cool anymore, god I feel old

At a weekend away with some of my most hipster (but in a good nearly-40 way, not a twatty 23yr old way) friends and three of them independently said their favourite current cheese is Comte. This can't be coincidence, is comte having a moment? Which other cheeses are cool?

My personal favourite is castello blue. I have no idea how hipster this is or not but I think it is on a par with blue nun

Drizzledrozzle - Vignotte's a firm but creamy textured cheese, quite mild in flavour and Vallages is the name that Waitrose sell it as. Try it - it's lovely. (They also have a Brie with truffles, which is really good as well...)

footphobic · 08/09/2018 23:05

Cross post with Rhonda 😊

SuburbanRhonda · 08/09/2018 23:06

A close second is Manchego drizzled with truffle honey.

ThanosSavedMe · 08/09/2018 23:07

Dairylea? Don’t be so bloody ridiculous. Everyone knows that laughing cow is far superior 🤣

SuburbanRhonda · 08/09/2018 23:08

Omg foot, we posted about the exact same cheese at the exact same moment (I know that’s what a cross-post us, but still!).

Fabricwitch · 08/09/2018 23:08

Manchaego is my favourite cheese.

thereallifesaffy · 08/09/2018 23:10

True story : recent brass band trip to Blackpool (yes... ) and the cheese board at the 'hotel' was - dairylea, babybel and wrapped individual cheddar.

TheBananaStand2 · 08/09/2018 23:11

Aged goudas are having a moment where I live.

hoistmeupjudy · 08/09/2018 23:12

I love a babybel light Smile only 40ish kcal.

I think manchego sounds like a Spanish pornstar...

It tastes a bit like a Spanish porn star too.

Comte has been pushed quite hard lately. Raymond Blanc mentions it every chance he gets. Other than that it all seems to be about the small producer.

BMW6 · 08/09/2018 23:18

Not sure about cool, but this cheese is the dog’s bollocks

Literally. "Fromage de la canine testicolos"

All cheese should be kept cool, and anyone describing their friends as "hipster" is an utter "wanker".

Smile

All cheese is lovely except halloumi which is salty rubber. Fact.

mamahanji · 08/09/2018 23:25

My all time favourite cheeses are a really disgustingly pungent Stilton

And smoked provolone 😍

InspectorIkmen · 08/09/2018 23:26

Asiago from Venice - delicious and cool as fuck. Quite tricky to get it here so people might assume you're the kind of Euro-coolster who nips over to Italy for a little light deli shopping. 😂

footphobic · 08/09/2018 23:27

I live rurally and there is a small village near me that has a fantastic butchers with a deli and cheese counter. I have to discipline myself to not go in there. They also do literally the best bacon sandwiches.

Spermysextowel · 08/09/2018 23:28

Apericubes & Primula squirted directly into the mouth. The ham one (wish they still did the blue cheese one). And Marmite flavoured cheddar mini-cheeses.

buttermilkwaffles · 08/09/2018 23:56

Pont-l'Évêque must be cool because my nearest Sainsburys hasn't had it in stock for nearly 2 months. Or maybe there is some other reason? It's similar in taste and appearance to Brie but comes in a small square box.

buttermilkwaffles · 08/09/2018 23:57

Oh and Comte is okay, bit boring though.

delphguelph · 09/09/2018 00:12

Dunno why you're getting flack for a reasonable question, op.

delphguelph · 09/09/2018 00:14

thereallifesaffy

^^

Please tell us more about the brass band outing to Blackpool....

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 09/09/2018 00:26

Vallage is the best. I love it

Fillybuster · 09/09/2018 00:32

I find Comte a bit bland.

If you’re looking to up your cheese conversation game, op, how about dropping in a nice Taleggio, some Chaumes and maybe a bit of aged Manchego (with membrillo (quince jelly) of course)?

and then add “Although I find you still can’t beat a really good locally made cave-aged cheddar from Wookey Hole.”

For perfect “I know my way around an international cheese board and will then trump you with specific, locally sourced, artisanal produce”

😀

itwillbealrightpromise · 09/09/2018 00:41

Halloumi appears to be having a moment, as does Raclette.

Miladymilord · 09/09/2018 00:46

Marmite cheddar.

I want to melt loads of them down then fondue the shit out it

God they're good.
