Having to wait a week to confirm if pregnant

Next appointment for blood test is in a week but I feel that is too long to keep someone waiting

I’ve never had a blood test to confirm pregnancy - usually just a home test is sufficient.

TeddyIsaHe · 21/07/2018 15:30

Why do you need a blood test? Just pee on a stick. GP surgeries are massively, massively busy, so YABU unless you’re about to drip feed.

dontlikebeards · 21/07/2018 15:30

3dc and only ever peed on a stick, never had a blood test to confirm.

CrackerCrisp · 21/07/2018 15:35

But GPs don’t confirm a pregnancy, they just go on your home test results. Unless there’s a reason, which you haven’t said.

BikeRunSki · 21/07/2018 15:36

Home tests are as accurate as any other way now.

confusedgirl123 · 21/07/2018 15:38

All home and doctors tests negative but doctor said all symptoms relate to pregnancy and she's referred me for blood test and ultrasound

SnuggyBuggy · 21/07/2018 15:39

Have you done a home test?

BottleOfJameson · 21/07/2018 15:39

I'm assuming there's some reason why you need a blood test but I can see why that isn't high priority. Obviously for you it's massively difficult to wake for a week but it's not an immediate answer is not a necessity from a health perspective.

DoneDisappeared · 21/07/2018 15:39

POAS

welshweasel · 21/07/2018 15:40

If your home test isn’t pregnant (assuming it’s a reputable brand) then you’re not pregnant. Never seen it in many years of being a doctor. Home tests are so reliable these days.

abbsisspartacus · 21/07/2018 15:40

They are maybe testing for phantom pregnancy?

Shumpalumpa · 21/07/2018 15:43
Hmm
fatfatwaterrat · 21/07/2018 15:48

It's not impossible to get negative tests when pregnant! I was convinced I was pregnant with dd2. Loads and loads of negative tests. I hadn't had periods for 6 months and had blood tests and scans which confirmed I was starting premature menopause at 21.

I pushed the doctor for a blood test. Negative. I paid for a private scan. Nothing there.

Finally the doctor organised a scan and a blood test and low and behold, 13 weeks pregnant.

No one has any idea why it didn't show up on any tests, or blood tests or even the scan.

The only way I knew I was pregnant was because I could feel it.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 21/07/2018 15:52

A friend of mine had negative urine tests when pregnant.

Why the urgent need to know?

confusedgirl123 · 21/07/2018 15:53

Thank you @fatfatwaterrat I've never been pregnant before so wouldn't know how I would feel but I know I'm not the same atm. Glad someone has had negative tests before and been pregnant as I feel stupid for even considering it as an option due to the negative tests

OP posts:
confusedgirl123 · 21/07/2018 15:55

@TestingTestingWonTooFree
I've only just arranged to go on a night out next Friday and I've fully paid for it (drinks all paid for) i waited until as close to the time as possible to confirm going so that I thought there was no chance of me being pregnant but since then all these symptoms

OP posts:
KwatahPanda · 21/07/2018 15:56

@fatfatwaterrat but your periods had been gone longer than your pregnancy, isn't it more likely you were pregnant, miscarried early (before tests were accurate) then got pregnant again and had to wait again?

Grimbles · 21/07/2018 16:00

YABU to think that possible pregnancy should prioritise you over all the other people waiting on their appointments.

Gilead · 21/07/2018 16:01

I spent 37 weeks with negative pregnancy tests. My GP was fascinated and used to do them right up until the day before I had him. We still don't know why.

BunsOfAnarchy · 21/07/2018 16:02

Have you tried a test that will pick up a lower level of hormone?

My positive test only came from a First Response pregnancy test. All the others were showed negative for me

KwatahPanda · 21/07/2018 16:03

YABU to think that possible pregnancy should prioritise you over all the other people waiting on their appointments.

Depends if the person wants to continue with that pregnancy, or if there is risk of an ectopic doesn't it though?

Notquiteagandt · 21/07/2018 16:03

Have you had a positive home pregnancy test and a pregnancy of unknown location?

Or is it literally to confirm you are pregnant?

If it is the later. Unless you have some urgant medical reason to know asap. Then waiting a week will give the best results. As hormones should have increased loads by then.

confusedgirl123 · 21/07/2018 16:09

No real medical need.

Confused that the doctor hasn't tried any other tests than blood test and ultrasound so she must be positive that it's pregnancy?

OP posts:
BottleOfJameson · 21/07/2018 16:13

I don't think the GP is necessarily positive it's pregnancy but if you're just having generic symptoms there's probably not much else she would test for at this stage (could be random hormone fluctuations, stomach bug, virus none of which would require a test).
