To be pissed off at the fever tree take over

Been on the Atkins for 6 weeks and lost lots of weight. Saturday was my birthday and so I decided to treat myself to a gin and slim - no carbs! Went to the bar and was given a gin and fever tree refreshingly light so I decided to check the label. 4g of carbs - that's a third of my daily allowance. I asked for another slimline tonic - anything all the others have 0 calories and 0 carbs but no - only fever tree. It's not a slimline tonic people scrap the fever tree - you need to stock something else

With restrictive and/or prescriptive diets it's difficult to sympathise when they're done through choice, I'm not sure an establishment should have to base its choice of stock on the chance that a small number of customers are on Atkins. YABU.

dementedpixie · 04/06/2018 07:48

It will be because they avoid artificial sweeteners. 4g of carbs will hardly make you obese

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 04/06/2018 07:51

And I don’t want to be served a slimline tonic filled with shitty artificial sweeteners 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m pleased more and more places are serving fever tree rather then that chemical crap

greedypiglet · 04/06/2018 07:51

There are carbs in tonic water?. You learn something everyday.

Glumglowworm · 04/06/2018 07:53

If you choose a restricted diet, surely it’s not a surprise that it restricts you from nice things?

MyOtherUsernameisaPun · 04/06/2018 07:57

Eating so low carb is really restrictive - it's not that suprising that not everywhere will stock suitable drinks for Atkins. Do you like soda? If so a vodka soda would be a good sub for you.

ToadOfSadness · 04/06/2018 08:00

I am only buying Fever Tree at the moment due to the artificial sweeteners in the others. I have avoided sweeteners for years but now just avoid most drinks because of it.

My diet is restricted because of my principles, sweeteners and palm oil restrict it a lot.

BakedBeans47 · 04/06/2018 08:00

YABU

It’s not uncommon for places to sell only one brand of tonic and I much prefer fever tree as others have said as there’s no crappy artificial sweeteners.

GummyGoddess · 04/06/2018 08:01

The 0 calorie ones are filled with artificial sweeteners which either give me a headache or an upset stomach. If they got rid of fever tree what would I drink instead?

Wishesdocometrue · 04/06/2018 08:02

How much weight have you lost in 6 weeks out of interest?

LoniceraJaponica · 04/06/2018 08:03

A pub recently served me a Hendriks with slimline Schweppes tonic. It killed the taste of the gin. I was so disappointed. IMO Fever Tree makes the best tonic water. It makes the gin sing.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 04/06/2018 08:05

LoniceraJaponica I would’ve been gutted! Hendricks deserves a moment to shine and artificial sweeteners just won’t do it!!

restingbemusedface · 04/06/2018 08:06

This is why fad diets are ridiculous - they push you towards eating and drinking more processed, chemically enhanced things under the guise of being ‘healthy’. Don’t want fever tree? Go to a grottier pub.

JeNeSuisPasVotreMiel · 04/06/2018 08:07

I absolutely won't buy tonic continuing artificial sweeteners any more.
They ruin the subtleties of the gin and make it taste bitter.

wowfudge · 04/06/2018 08:07

I'd rather have a little sugar than the sweeteners that are in diet drinks. If you really want to.low carb, don't drink alcohol at all.

NearLifeExperience · 04/06/2018 08:09

I like Fever Tree. I don't drink it in gin, but by itself. The others are too harsh and chemically.
I'm annoyed at the takeover of artificial sweeteners myself. In bloody everything.

ragged · 04/06/2018 08:09

12g carbs? Wow, hardcore. What is a typical daily meal plan to achieve that?

DragonsAndCakes · 04/06/2018 08:09

But if you’re asking for a slimline tonic then you probably want the sweetners? Otherwise you’d ask for regular tonic.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 04/06/2018 08:10

Wow 😯 of all the things to be pissed off over ! This site always throws up a new one 😂

theforceisstrong · 04/06/2018 08:10

YANBU I took my slimline Schweppes out and put the bottle behind the bar recently. It's fine if you like it but Fevertree has more calories and more carbs than you expect in a slimline tonic and should not be sold as slimline.

DontDrinkDontSmoke · 04/06/2018 08:14

Don’t want fever tree? Go to a grottier pub

The grotty pub I drink in serves fever tree.

Roussette · 04/06/2018 08:16

It's not called slimline though is it? It tastes so much nicer than other tonics so I'm glad it's becoming more mainstream.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 04/06/2018 08:18

A lot of places will only do one type of tonic. They’ve no space or need for a slimline, a non slimline, a fever tree etc so 9/10 when you ask for a g&t they only serve slimline Schweppes anyway

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/06/2018 08:19

Yes I agree. The ‘light’ ones are sweetened with pure fructose (high fructose corn syrup??) which is just as bad as sugar, and if you’re going sugar free/low carb then it’s fructose to avoid.
