To be pissed off at the fever tree take over

Been on the Atkins for 6 weeks and lost lots of weight. Saturday was my birthday and so I decided to treat myself to a gin and slim - no carbs! Went to the bar and was given a gin and fever tree refreshingly light so I decided to check the label. 4g of carbs - that's a third of my daily allowance. I asked for another slimline tonic - anything all the others have 0 calories and 0 carbs but no - only fever tree. It's not a slimline tonic people scrap the fever tree - you need to stock something else

YANBU. I can't bear Fevertree, bland and sickly and coats my teeth. I don't drink gin if the pub only has `Fevertree. Like another poster I sometimes take my own Schweppes slimline with me. It's probably a case of preferring what you are used to.

RomeoBunny · 04/06/2018 08:20

Tonic water is full of sugar. Thats why they make a slimline version Hmm

It's just quinine flavoured soft drink ffs. How are people so soft?

Deux · 04/06/2018 08:22

Fever-Tree have been taken over? By whom?

Juells · 04/06/2018 08:24

How can anyone exist on 12g of carbs a day? gobsmacked

troodiedoo · 04/06/2018 08:25

Yanbu. Schweppes should be the standard in all pubs. Hate all this wanky gin. No I don't want pink gin!

FASH84 · 04/06/2018 08:26

You know Dr Atkins died of a heart condition? Ironic for a cardiologist who designed a diet for a healthier heart....

CaitlynsCat · 04/06/2018 08:27

The issue here is that drinks containing artificial sweeteners are absolutely fucking rank.

So if you care about quality it's better to serve Fever Tree Light, which uses fructose (about 50% sweeter than sucrose), rather than some Schweppes crap containing Aspartame & Acesulfame K which tastes disgusting.

Also the Atkins diet is a silly fad and they aren't required to cater your crank diet at all. 150ml of Fever Tree Light is 22 calories, which is negligible, while the accompanying 50ml of gin has 132 calories, which certainly isn't

MairzyDoats · 04/06/2018 08:28

I like elderflower in my gin #totallymissespoint

troodiedoo · 04/06/2018 08:29

Except that he didn't, he died from a brain injury from a fall.

londonrach · 04/06/2018 08:33

Op...avoid any diet drinks as the sweeters are worse than real sugar.

TheFirstMrsDV · 04/06/2018 08:36

Handholding here OP.
You can get through this terrible trauma if we all send prayers and good wishes.

xoxo

raisedbyguineapigs · 04/06/2018 08:39

Try vodka and Soda with a slice of lime. If you are on very low carb diet you need to make adjustments when you go out. It's not going to blow your whole diet having one tonic. If it does, its probably not for you.

CaitlynsCat · 04/06/2018 08:40

"The ‘light’ ones are sweetened with pure fructose (high fructose corn syrup??) which is just as bad as sugar, and if you’re going sugar free/low carb then it’s fructose to avoid."

This is wrong.

  1. Fructose tastes sweeter at lower temperatures (as a drink would be), so you use less, which is obviously better.
  2. HFCS is 'high fructose', not 'all fructose', it contains a substantial proportion of fructose.
  3. Fever Tree contains pure fructose, not HFCS.
  4. To the extent that HFCS is problematic it is because of people guzzling 5 gallons of Coca Cola a day, not a 150ml can of tonic water.
  5. A can of Coke contains 35 grams of sugars, a Fever Tree light only 5.7 grams.

Schweppes (non-slimline) tonic water is horribly sweet.

Sweetpotatoaddict · 04/06/2018 08:40

I came onto this thread panicked that fevertree had been taken over and would end up with artificial sweeteners in it, i’m now relieved Grin

Bettyfood · 04/06/2018 08:42

I defy anyone to blind taste the difference between different gins and tonics when they are mixed. Hipster ponciness, much of it.

HamishTheTalkingCactus · 04/06/2018 08:43

Fevertree is nice enough to drink on it's own without the gin. Shall I show myself out now?

CaitlynsCat · 04/06/2018 08:44

"I defy anyone to blind taste the difference between different gins and tonics when they are mixed. Hipster ponciness, much of it."

Not all gins taste different from all other gins, but there are completely different flavours between some of them, and a gin & t is 75% tonic, so if you can't taste the difference then there's something wrong with your taste buds.

Cheby · 04/06/2018 08:45

Oh god yeah the OP is such and entitled twat for wanting to lose weight. Hmm

Sounds like you asked for a slimline tonic and weren’t given one OP, I’ve done keto before and that would royally piss me off as well. I’m doing Slimming World now because keto doesn’t mix well with breastfeeding, and I’d be very annoyed if I was served a full sugar drink instead of a diet one. It’s the same thing really.

sofato5miles · 04/06/2018 08:45

It's not hipster nonsense. We were having G%Ts the other night and used a diff tonic for each round as we were mopping up tonic from a party. The very worst was the last which was an own brand tonic as it was so ridiculoysly sweet.

DerelictWreck · 04/06/2018 08:46

12g a day is 6% of what an adult is recommended as part of a regular diet.

So 4g is 2% - give Fever Tree a break that's hardly high carb!

By the way, there's about 4g-6g of carbs in a carrot. Just to put this into perspective...

Roussette · 04/06/2018 08:47

Betty I take up your challenge! I am a real g&t drinker and can tell different tonics, different gins etc Gin

ShakeShakeTheMuffin · 04/06/2018 08:47

Ha ha. Me too Sweetpotato

FatherMackenzie · 04/06/2018 08:48

I’ve done the Atkins diet. It really works, but you do have to be strict. That said, it’s not as if you couldn’t have had a vodka and soda, so I wouldn’t get too worked up about it. And I also hate artificial sweeteners and actually didn’t think they were recommended on Atkins..?

So, on balance, I think yabu.

ElRopo · 04/06/2018 08:51

It annoys me too. I'm a Type 1 diabetic who enjoys a G&T and the Fevertree Light raises my blood sugars whereas good old Schweppes Slimline does not. Times are tough no? Wink

Myusernameisunique · 04/06/2018 08:51

I can 100% taste the difference @Bettyfood and even if I couldn't the terrible headache afterwards would be enough for me to know if drank some crappy slimline full of artificial sweeteners. OP change to soda and a slice of lemon or lime as a mixer? Then you can continue with your awful diet which will suck all the joy out of your life and eventually make you really unwell. Take it from someone that knows! Honestly please find a healthier way to lose weight before you end up really ill.
