To be pissed off at the fever tree take over

Been on the Atkins for 6 weeks and lost lots of weight. Saturday was my birthday and so I decided to treat myself to a gin and slim - no carbs! Went to the bar and was given a gin and fever tree refreshingly light so I decided to check the label. 4g of carbs - that's a third of my daily allowance. I asked for another slimline tonic - anything all the others have 0 calories and 0 carbs but no - only fever tree. It's not a slimline tonic people scrap the fever tree - you need to stock something else

Try vodka and Soda with a slice of lime.

This! Or gin and soda, either flavoured ones or with added fresh fruit.

Soda on draught is tap water that gets carbonated on its way to your glass, pretty much zero anything so to speak.....

sallythesheep73 · 04/06/2018 09:38

I have shares in fever tree :-)

CaitlynsCat · 04/06/2018 10:57

"In his early books such as Dr Atkins' New Diet Revolution, Atkins made the controversial argument that the low-carbohydrate diet produces a metabolic advantage because "burning fat takes more calories so you expend more calories".[9] He cited one study in which he estimated this advantage to be 950 Calories (4.0 MJ) per day. A review study published in Lancet[10] concluded that there was no such metabolic advantage and dieters were simply eating fewer calories. Astrup stated, "The monotony and simplicity of the diet could inhibit appetite and food intake." David L. Katz has characterized Atkins' claim as nonsense.[2]"

MumofBoysx2 · 04/06/2018 11:00

I wouldn't use anything else but Fever tree. Now I try different ones and they taste horrible and chemical-ly. I would cut something else out and enjoy a decent G&T!

BuntyII · 04/06/2018 11:02

Your diet has made you go mental. Life is too short to spend fretting about 4g carbs, unless you are diabetic.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 04/06/2018 11:05

Well I can’t drink drink Schweppes, either the slimline or normal version, because of the artifivial sweeteners. That is because they actually make me ILL. But I suppose the fact that I would have to spend the afternoon on the toilet is one way to lose weight....

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/06/2018 11:10

It may not have a metabolic advantage but a lot of people who follow low carb diets do find that it helps them reduce the amount of calories they eat without feeling deprived because their cravings for high carb, sweet food disappears. Start eating more sugar (including fructose, which is the point of the thread) and those cravings return. So for some, 4g could be significant. It isn’t for everyone, granted. But I know many people, myself included, who have transformed their health, lost weight, and tackled lifelong food issues (such as binge eating, overeating) simply by reducing the amount of carbs they eat.

We’ve just reached 10,000 posts on our blood sugar diet threads, so it must be working for some people.....

Whatshallidonowpeople · 04/06/2018 11:13

Most people don't want the artificial sweeteners. Treating food and drink as a treat is why you are have to diet. Stop it.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 04/06/2018 11:16

I defy anyone to blind taste the difference between different gins and tonics when they are mixed.

I can tell the difference! DH made me a G&T at the weekend. He asked me which I fancied (I have several) so I asked for Portobello Road. He brought me my G&T, it was lovely, perfect balance of gin to tonic but as I said to him.... that’s Tanqueray not Portobello!

Mind you some people can’t tell the difference between a Merlot and a Rioja either....

raisedbyguineapigs · 04/06/2018 11:38

I thought the super-low carb phase of the Atkins only lasted for the first couple of weeks?

I havent done Atkins but I did another LC diet. The 2 week phase lasts for 2 weeks unless you fall off the wagon even a little bit, then you have to continue! I never got out of the '2 week' phase, so decided it wasn't for me Grin

greendale17 · 04/06/2018 11:40

Really? Getting worked up over 4g of carbs!???!!!!!!

theforceisstrong · 04/06/2018 12:12

Not really getting worked up! ConfusedIf you have a slimline option it should be no carb no calories otherwise what's the point? If you don't want no calorie you can have fully loaded fever tree but for us that do let's have a proper slimline tonic not this product which is neither one or the other

Oblomov18 · 04/06/2018 12:30

I'm not that keen on fever tree. It seems to be all the rage. But I find it sickly sweet. I like the fact that Schweppes slim-line tonic is tart and sour. But maybe it's just what I've been used to for years?
But as a diabetic the artificial sweeteners do bother me.

Now I don't know which one to drink!!
And a G&T is my preference for a drink, so yes it does matter!

jamoncrumpets · 04/06/2018 12:33

I tried cucumber Fevertree yesterday. Oh mama! It's a game changer!

Coldilox · 04/06/2018 12:36

You have a 12g a day allowance for carbs? That's ridiculous. Carbs are not the devil. I've lost 23lb since mid march and I'm allowed up to 190g a day of carbs

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 04/06/2018 12:37

but you chose to go on a mad diet - it is hardly the fault of the Fever Tree company is it?

Coldilox · 04/06/2018 12:38

And the low cal fever tree is a million times nicer than any other slimline tonic

DaffoDeffo · 04/06/2018 12:41

yes I would agree - low cal fever tree tastes better than slimline schwepps tonic

watch out for fanta zero too which is not zero sugar (if you're fanta inclined!)

ImFreeToDoWhatIWant · 04/06/2018 13:20

Slimline is not a legally prescribed term, surely people aren't stupid enough to believe it is?! Lol! It simply means its lower calorie than its non slimline counterpart.

Mousefunky · 04/06/2018 13:22

I worked in a pub years ago and we didn’t even do ‘slimline’, it was proper tonic of nuffin and was definitely Schweppes Grin.

YABU to do Atkins at all.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 04/06/2018 13:29

Fever tree is vile. I only like standard Schweppes, although I worry about the sweeteners in that now having read this!

LoniceraJaponica · 04/06/2018 13:30

" I like the fact that Schweppes slim-line tonic is tart and sour."

But it isn't. It has that sickly sweet taste, and an even worse, sickly sweet after taste.

WineAndTiramisu · 04/06/2018 13:32

I found Atkins worked well (years ago) but you shouldn't have alcohol either on it, as your body metabolizes that instead of your fat, so messes up the weight loss. I managed to lose no weight once doing Atkins just due to alcohol intake GrinGrin

Elphame · 04/06/2018 13:35

I'm delighted at the Fever Tree take over! I want my G&T to taste like one and not to taste of artificial sweetener. Schweppes is just plain nasty. No bitterness left at all.

You have plenty of choice now - those of us who don't want the artificial sweeteners are the ones who are heavily restricted in our choice.

Butterymuffin · 04/06/2018 14:10

can’t believe how nasty some people are being to the OP regarding her choice of diet.

They aren't, they're incredulous that she's so exercised over the pub's apparent failings. If you choose that diet, it's your responsibility to go places where they have the options you want, not for every establishment to cater to your very very specific desires.
