To be pissed off at the fever tree take over

Been on the Atkins for 6 weeks and lost lots of weight. Saturday was my birthday and so I decided to treat myself to a gin and slim - no carbs! Went to the bar and was given a gin and fever tree refreshingly light so I decided to check the label. 4g of carbs - that's a third of my daily allowance. I asked for another slimline tonic - anything all the others have 0 calories and 0 carbs but no - only fever tree. It's not a slimline tonic people scrap the fever tree - you need to stock something else

The issue about whether you agree with the Atkins diet is a red herring. And its not about wanting a specific brand either.

The point is the pub does not stock a diet/sugar free tonic. Thats annoying for those of us that want a diet/sugar free tonic. They offered something which they thought was diet/sugar free but it is not (and many people don't know that). First world problem, but YANBU.

Next time ask what tonic they have first, and if they don't have a diet tonic then you can choose something else. Personally i do like fever tree (but its not diet!). I also like a decent non-alcoholic lager (ie not becks blue) but not many places stock that either.

Ice, lime and gin, who needs tonic?
Actually, as my user name suggests, I generally drink gin neat Gin

"I also like a decent non-alcoholic lager (ie not becks blue) but not many places stock that either."

I agree. My favourite is Erdinger.

Oblomov18 · 04/06/2018 16:38

Japonica which tonic is the most sour and tart then? If not Schweppes?

Oblomov18 · 04/06/2018 16:41

I agree. This has nothing to do with Atkins, or OP's diet choices. It's just that things change, trends, and most pubs used to serve Schweppes, now a lot are serving fever tree.

Elphame · 04/06/2018 16:51

Sadly my pub does not stock a NON artificial sweetener tonic!

I order my gin and bring my own tonic.

Gin and sparkling mineral water with a slice of lemon? Personally I think it would probably taste better. I hate sweet drinks.

theforceisstrong · 04/06/2018 17:21

Since when has wanting a a diet or sugar feee option been a very specific need - it's a very common requirement. Most drinks come in a diet form. app has it spot on the fever tree light is being positioned and is replacing the diet versions but it is not calorie or carb feee. Lots of people want that not just those on diets

My pub only serves Pepsi Max on draft. If not it's bottles and stupidly expensive.

I don't kick up a fuss.

I just drink something else....

PrimalLass · 04/06/2018 17:26

I don't like Fever Tree. It's the emperor's new clothes of tonic 😂

PaintedHorizons · 04/06/2018 17:27

Love Fever Tree. Hate artificial sweeteners. Glad the compnay not being taken over!

You know Dr Atkins died of a heart condition? Ironic for a cardiologist who designed a diet for a healthier heart..

It's pretty pleasant to peddle a lie about someone's death to make your point.

theforceisstrong · 04/06/2018 17:45

I hate Pepsi max

And maybe he would have died sooner if he hadn't followed a low-carb diet.

XiCi · 04/06/2018 18:24

Well I'm on a low carb diet and most definitely want fever Tree light as I get terrible headaches from aspartame. 3.8g of carbs and 15cal is bloody brilliant for a mixer that doesn't ruin your gin with sickly sweeteners. If you are on a strict diet or are diabetic you have a responsibility to check labels not blame the product. It has never been marketed as a zero cal drink.

BTW 12g carbs is ridiculously low. You can safely and quickly lose weight on quadruple that amount without putting your kidneys under so much pressure and making you freak out at the thought of a (low carb) mixer.

PrimalLass · 04/06/2018 19:43

*unpleasant. BTW

Roussette · 05/06/2018 06:19

Fever Tree has already been taken over, it is a real success story and well done the founder. Started off in 2005, sold the Co for £73M.

Roussette · 05/06/2018 06:21

Correction... the Company was sold for far far more. He made £73M on the sale.

It is now worth more than Britvic and three times as much as Debenhams. All from having an idea that good gin should be mixed with good tonic.

Fintress · 05/06/2018 06:37

A pub recently served me a Hendriks with slimline Schweppes tonic. It killed the taste of the gin. I was so disappointed. IMO Fever Tree makes the best tonic water. It makes the gin sing.

This happened to me recently. I knew at the first sip as my drink tasted so artificial, it was vile.

LoniceraJaponica · 05/06/2018 06:49

I didn't even know it was slimline, but knew it was Schweppes. As soon as I took my first mouthful I thought that it didn't taste right, and had that sickly sweet after taste that you only get with artificial sweeteners. I felt robbed.

I agree that there is a lot of ponciness associated with gin these days as it has become very trendy to drink it, so I had a blind tasting gin session with a friend. And my favourite of the 4 that I tried was.....Gordons.

user1471530109 · 05/06/2018 07:02

I had a similar conversation with a bar man only last week. I made him check all the vittles. Not for carb content but sugar! I'm a type 1 diabetic and a g and t minute the sugar is wonderful.
He kept trying to push the expensive fever tree and looked a bit gone out when I eventually settled on the slime line tonic.

Sometimes it's not 'just a fad diet' and what happened to choice?

GorgonLondon · 05/06/2018 07:04

You sound very naive about low calorie diets. I've been slim or skinny most of my life, I routinely count calories, and I'll happily drink the fever tree naturally light.

Btw 6kg in 6 weeks is not that much weight to lose if you're very overweight to start with. And Atkins is terrible for your health!

Just have a diet Coke or soda water if it bothers you that much

ParellelReality · 05/06/2018 07:27

What a snide post.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/06/2018 07:39

Gorgon she’s not doing a low calorie diet. She’s doing Atkins. It’s not the calories she’s concerned about, it’s the grams of carbs.
