“Transgender activists have contacted Mumsnet advertisers and said they will be organising a boycott of their products if they don’t remove their advertising from Mumsnet,” Roberts said.

“A significant minority of our users feel very strongly about women’s rights and very uneasy [about the proposals]. This is an issue that needs to be discussed and that’s why we’re prepared to take any potential advertising hit.”

I’ve been ignoring this thread all week as I thought it would be sycophantic nonsense. However when I bothered to click on it I couldn’t be more supportive. Well done Justine!

Fairenuff · 18/04/2018 18:15

I think in court you could say to the judge that you would respect the accused preferred pronouns but just to let him know that you would be lying. Just so that it went on record that you would be lying under oath as instructed to by the judge.

mathanxiety · 18/04/2018 20:34

I think you would be sailing a bit too close to the wind there, Fairenuff.

AdelicaArundel · 19/04/2018 07:30

I've been lurking on this thread and echo the praise for Justine.

Sorry to hijack, but Xeniaaaaa ! how wonderful to see you surface again.
You were very generous here several years ago on a thread for freelancers.

Echo2 · 19/04/2018 07:37

HQ didn’t have much choice really did they.
Give in to the trans activists and they’d lose 1000’s of MN members.
Feminists will always be the backbone of mumsnet & they know this. Annoy them and it’s game over.

AppleCocoon · 19/04/2018 07:39

I think it is great that Justine/MNHQ were willing to take a stand on this and do the right thing

I hope that they will take a similar stand on Emma Healey’s data breach and her posting of mumsnetters’ details/IP addresses online. She broke her contract to post that info and some of her tweets were very threatening. It needs to be reported and followed through properly. An apology from her is not enough. Further action should be taken.

Xenia · 19/04/2018 08:06

I don't envy anyone who has to run a website with postings. It is a legal minefield at times but we are lucky people are prepared to do it and to let even me post. (Thanks for the welcomes back above....)

Hypermice · 19/04/2018 08:12

We don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes re the data breach. I’m assuming they will be reported to the ICO who can issue guidance. It would leave MNHQ open to quite harsh penalties if they don’t do this in a timely fashion. I hope they’re getting proper advice on how to handle this.

AppleCocoon · 19/04/2018 08:55

Some of yesterday’s posts seemed to suggest that it wouldn’t be reported but others have chimed in to say that it should be. I hope it is and I hope action is taken.

She should face the consequences for stealing data. If she really wanted to highlight what Mumsnetters say, she could easily have linked to public threads. Screen grabs of personal information and references to friends on her side within MNHQ are calculated actions and comments.

In my (ever so humble) opinion, Mumsnet not only needs to do something but also be seen to be doing something. Reporting it is just the first step.

Xenia · 19/04/2018 10:47

Under current data law there is not actually a duty to report any breaches to the ICO unless you are in the public sector and even after the law changes next month so m any people are saying there will also be a duty to report breaches the ICO has had to issue a blog making it clear not all breaches will need to be reported even then. iconewsblog.org.uk/2017/09/05/gdpr-setting-the-record-straight-on-data-breach-reporting/

I am afraid I don't know anything about this specific data breach however.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 19/04/2018 11:14

Fuck me Xenia is back.

Is it end of days already?

Even I can feel it is a little wrong on a thread dedicated to the wonderful Justine on her website that somehow I (through I promise no deliberate intention) deflect it to me. Not end of days - beginning of a new era of unity of women and fairness and justice for all.

The data is still available online as of 5 minutes ago, if it were my IP address I would have already spoken to the police.

Lancelottie · 19/04/2018 13:15

Nah, it's well worth a welcome back, Xenia (though I suspect you never went away -- you have a somewhat distinctive style of writing). I disagree with at least half your views and find it refreshing that you always stick firmly to them.

drspouse · 19/04/2018 13:34

who's Xenia?

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 19/04/2018 14:29

Your island could have been the new Themyscira, Xenia.

Must say I am ecstatic to see you Xenia!!

Now where is dittany?!

BarrackerBarmer · 19/04/2018 16:24

Oh I would LOVE to see dittany back too.
I think she pretty much terfed me.

Ohforfoxsakereturns · 19/04/2018 16:45

The Second Coming would love all this. Does she ever visit?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 19/04/2018 17:55

'Oh I would LOVE to see dittany back too.
I think she pretty much terfed me.'

And that would REALLY upset the TAs.

OvaHere · 19/04/2018 18:03

I was reading through some old FWR threads going back to 2010 to get a feel for how the gender debate on here had developed.

It's a shame Dittany's posts are now removed because I would love to read some with the benefit of hindsight.

I'm sure she had her reasons for deleting the account though.

Xenia · 19/04/2018 19:20

Above all I support freedom of speech so the trend in some places on line to curb it particularly in relation to trans issues seems retrograde to me. i think we should always fall on the side of having to allow people to feel a bit hurt and offended if it means free speech prevails although it is not an easy line to draw when people have such different views on things like Brexit and Labour v Tories and whether women should work etc. I just want us to continue to be free on here and elsewhere to be different from each other.

(I'm just a poster; nothing special. As I am now a granny and the twins (youngest children) left for university in September I am not sure I fit the right profile either although I have certainly had an interesting 30+ years as a full time working mother and feminist).

AdelicaArundel · 19/04/2018 20:49

Hijacking again but I know you're looking at this thread @Xenia.

Several years ago (2013?) you came on a thread which was called something like "how can I earn £1k a month"?
And you gave a master class on aiming high, and valuing one's skills.
Instead of aiming for £1k per month you argued for £1k per day.
Personally, I continue to find that mindset inspirational- and you have made a difference to my perception of my skills, what I charge and hence, the quality of my children's lives.

So, yeah, just a poster...like Datun who has taught me feminism here.

If I learned anything from that thread, it was the power of one person to lift another up to be the better version of themselves ( Blush I'll have to name change again)
