“Transgender activists have contacted Mumsnet advertisers and said they will be organising a boycott of their products if they don’t remove their advertising from Mumsnet,” Roberts said.

“A significant minority of our users feel very strongly about women’s rights and very uneasy [about the proposals]. This is an issue that needs to be discussed and that’s why we’re prepared to take any potential advertising hit.”

She's obviously hit peak trans at some point because early doors people were getting banned left right and centre for discussing trans issues and posting gender critical views. I'm very happy this has become a space where this can be discussed, it's essential, so yes good on her and MNHQ.

Sallystyle · 15/04/2018 00:48

Awesome! Thank you Justine.

Weezol · 15/04/2018 00:49

Thank you Justine and Mumsnet HQ.

Neolara · 15/04/2018 00:49

Agreed. Thank you mm for standing firm in your commitment to allowing free speech.. I know discussions about trans issues can get very heated, but they are always interesting. The pressure to shut down debate is very alarming..

Berthatydfil · 15/04/2018 00:50

Well I’m quite happy to message advertisers and tell them that I support mumsnet and would support businesses that continue to advertise here and vice Verda for any that drop mums net.
As one of the class that makes up 52% of the population compared to 1% I wonder whose voices will be heard.

Somerville · 15/04/2018 00:50

So proud I've turned off my ad-blocker for Mumsnet.
Thank you Justine.

hedgebackwards · 15/04/2018 00:50

Good on you Justine.

Sallystyle · 15/04/2018 00:51

Yeah, im going to turn my adblocker off too.

Mamaryllis · 15/04/2018 00:52

Awesome. The more light that is shone brightly on the underhand tactics used to attempt to silence debate, the better.
Thank you Justine. And thank you Andrew.

RunMummyRun68 · 15/04/2018 00:52

That's amazing

The mumsnet spirit from the past re-emerging!

Angryresister · 15/04/2018 00:52

Thank you MUmsnet for allowing discussion of these crucial issues and resisting the TRAs bullying behaviour. It won't be long before they will fade into insignificance if we all resist.

BarrackerBarmer · 15/04/2018 00:52

Bravo Justine.

I suspect it may be a significant majority rather than a minority that feel strongly about women's rights, but until all women can speak freely with no fear of repercussions we'll never know.

Regardless of your own views I stand with you if you stand for free speech.

thecatfromjapan · 15/04/2018 00:54

That's pretty cool. Smile

DixieFlatline · 15/04/2018 00:54

Thank you Justine.

PositivelyPERF · 15/04/2018 00:55

Turning off adblocker is a great idea. Does anyone know if the advertisers or MNHQ can tell if adblockers are turned off?

AornisHades · 15/04/2018 00:55

Good stuff Justine. I suppose we'll never know who threatened to drop advertising sadly.

Beyond11cisRetinol · 15/04/2018 00:56

Love this. Justine, thank you.

JustaLittlePrick · 15/04/2018 00:57

I'm not loving the phrase "a significant minority of our users feel very strongly about women’s rights"

I guess we have to take every bone that's thrown at us though.

Beyond11cisRetinol · 15/04/2018 00:58

Will join the women above in celebrating with the removal of my ad blocker. Great idea Grin

ShovingLeopard · 15/04/2018 00:58

How very refreshing that Justine and Mumsnet have stood for the principal and not the money. Great stuff.

DancingLedge · 15/04/2018 01:00

Bufferingkisses · 15/04/2018 01:00

I think it's an incredible thing (sadly) to have somewhere to talk and read about this issue. Some views are extreme (in both directions) but that's the point of open debate, all the voices coming together and listening (and most importantly - hearing). It really sees like this is the only open forum to dothis which is so, so sad.

In all.of this there is probably a middle ground, a happy compromise that will only happen through all sides discussing. #nodebate has no place in adult lives. #letstalkaboutthis is all most people want. I don't understand why that is too much to ask.

PencilsInSpace · 15/04/2018 01:00

THANK YOU!

Oh wow, that's commendable. I'm one of those who don't actively enngage in the trans threads or agree with the majority view in them but I also don't think discussion on any subject should be shut down. That wouldn't help anyone.
