Open access link. www.thetimes.co.uk/article/mumsnet-founder-justine-roberts-transgender-activists-try-to-curb-free-speech-on-site-z3sr3nf6q?shareToken=ade388be59ac427155003eff83c5158c

“Transgender activists have contacted Mumsnet advertisers and said they will be organising a boycott of their products if they don’t remove their advertising from Mumsnet,” Roberts said.

“A significant minority of our users feel very strongly about women’s rights and very uneasy [about the proposals]. This is an issue that needs to be discussed and that’s why we’re prepared to take any potential advertising hit.”

Thanks for the link drspouse. I love JHB's self confidence in the face of bullshit.

ReluctantCamper · 16/04/2018 14:34

putting aside how Tara Flik Wood looks, they were running a crowd funder for voice feminisation surgery. Kind of outing, that.

R0wantrees · 16/04/2018 14:37

It is drawing equivalence with the 'outing' of people who are lesbian or gay. It's been used in all sorts of ways though... emotively and compassionately it has resonance for many.

In last week's court case, a person convicted of assaulting a woman claimed 'fear of being outed' as transgender was the reason for the attack as the woman was filming. (despite considerable evidence to the contrary)

RIcky Gervais made the point that it was impossible to not know that Bruce Jenner existed and had won Olympic medals.... speaking about this, may be seen by some, as 'outing' Caitlin Jenner!

(It has serious implications with regards reporting of crimes)

picklemepopcorn · 16/04/2018 14:55

India clearly hasn't been on the religion boards! I've never seen such unfettered discussion of religion as on here.

papayasareyum · 16/04/2018 14:58

India Willoughby is irritating as hell on twitter. She needs to stop telling women how to think and insisting that trans women are women: because they’re not. That’s not an opinion India; it’s an absolutely fact. An irrefutable fact. I’m a woman. You’re a trans woman. There’s a very big difference. I won’t deny that. I don’t care if you call me transphobic. I know myself.

Weebo · 16/04/2018 15:06

I fucking love Julia Hartley-Brewer. She just doesn't take any shite.

Justine did as well as anyone could given the circumstances. India
Willoughby thinks shouting people down equals intelligent debate.

OlennasWimple · 16/04/2018 15:15

The "outing" I can think of on MN is speculation that the recent YouTube shooter is a transwoman (and those threads were swiftly removed)

The "I am Spartacus" threads weren't about outing transwomen - what on earth is IW on about? Confused

drspouse · 16/04/2018 15:23

I expect IW hasn't read any of those threads owing to the fact that we're all really dangerous. And you could catch anything from talking to those nasty women.

papayasareyum · 16/04/2018 15:31

Julia Hartley Brewer handled India very well. India is used to shouting down women and telling them how to think. It’s what men have been doing for centuries.

Beyond11cisRetinol · 16/04/2018 15:44

Tara Wood’s fund raiser explicitly stated “hi, I’m Tara and I’m a 25 year old transwoman” - yet Tara whacked Maria across the head for the possibility that she might let someone, somewhere know Tara’s gender identity... Hmm

AIBU to be extremely proud of Justine Roberts & Mumsnet right now?
Beyond11cisRetinol · 16/04/2018 15:45

(Tara also named Tara’s employer in the crowdfunder, so can’t have been concerned about them knowing)

TerfsUp · 16/04/2018 15:51

"No longer outed by my voice" and "pass completely"? Tara, it is not only your voice that indicates you are a transwoman.

I wonder how Deliveroo feel about one of their employees being found guilty of assault on a 60 year-old woman.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 16/04/2018 15:51

ROwantrees - that was what made me think that Justine had peaked.

Melamin · 16/04/2018 16:35

Well someone called louise with a pink and blue flag has done a stirling job of advertising A Woman's Place on the link on Julia's twitter, and one called Guiliana has tweeted a long string of things we can't see. A good afternoon's work.

TheCrowFromBelow · 16/04/2018 16:47

Thank you Justine Flowers for not allowing us to be shouted down.
This is NOT about denying trans people their right to dress as they choose or use whichever names and pronouns they choose. It's about ensuring that the safe spaces and protected characteristics for biological women are protected rather than being razed in the name of "inclusivity".
Hear hear.

ihaveavoice · 16/04/2018 16:55

I read these threads and I am proud to be a woman and proud to have you all as sisters.
Well done all of you for speaking up and speaking out and well done Mumsnet for holding fast to the concept of freedom of speech.

We have every right to discuss what we like and to question such an important and wide ranging subject that impacts women.

HereComesTheSun2 · 16/04/2018 18:04

IW certainly has a way of twisting things. According to IW, Mumsnetters don't want to be on the same train as a trans person?

Er. no, that is about Caledonian's two-berth sleeping carriages (where you are in small, locked, confined space, getting changed and sleeping with one stranger.) These were single sex compartments (for good reason) and now Caledonian (without clearly publicising this to its female passengers) would put a lone female passenger in a sleeping compartment with not just an individual with a GRC, not just someone who has had sex reassignment surgery but with any male who utters the words 'I identify as a woman'. And women shouldn't even talk about this?

AnitaLovesVictor · 16/04/2018 18:42

Julia HB has tweeted this:

.@IndiaWilloughby hi India, on my @talkRADIO show this morning you claimed Mumsnet users were posting transphobic comments on the site. I can’t find any. Please can you tweet or DM the links to the comments which you found offensive? Thanks.

Flopsymopsycottontailbuns · 16/04/2018 18:49

@AnitaLovesVictor ha brilliant wonder what she will drag out as a reply!

JustaLittlePrick · 16/04/2018 18:55

I like Julia H-B too. I consider myself very lucky to have randomly flicked on Sky News paper review the night of the infamous Owen Jones tantrum. Excellent television. She handled him marvelously.

Flopsymopsycottontailbuns · 16/04/2018 19:03

Ah - replies with a whole feminist board - not specific then! Clearly being a feminist is enough (!)

IdentifiesAsMiddleAged · 16/04/2018 19:22

IW does not understand the nuance. She's completely misrepresented what gets discussed on here.

We have empathy for your struggles IW, but recognise our rights

I hope people DO come on here, as she repeatedly said.

And well done Justine

IdentifiesAsMiddleAged · 16/04/2018 19:25

Olenna's

Yes, that was the part (the I Am Spartacus comment) that made me wonder if IW was deliberately misrepresenting us. She could not have got it more wrong.
