Open access link. www.thetimes.co.uk/article/mumsnet-founder-justine-roberts-transgender-activists-try-to-curb-free-speech-on-site-z3sr3nf6q?shareToken=ade388be59ac427155003eff83c5158c

“Transgender activists have contacted Mumsnet advertisers and said they will be organising a boycott of their products if they don’t remove their advertising from Mumsnet,” Roberts said.

“A significant minority of our users feel very strongly about women’s rights and very uneasy [about the proposals]. This is an issue that needs to be discussed and that’s why we’re prepared to take any potential advertising hit.”

Stay strong Mumsnet.
And for those who have just clicked on this thread, and aren't sure what so many people are worried about, it's THIS;

Sevendown · 15/04/2018 14:42

Yes I’m so please to find free speech being defended somewhere!

Bowednotbroken · 15/04/2018 14:45

A big thank you from me too! Great news. Hope you're not getting too much crap thrown at you

GruffaloPants · 15/04/2018 14:46

Thanks mumsnet!

I bought fairy liquid today as I see they advertise on mumsnet, will be happy to keep supporting advertisers who don't withdraw from mumsnet.

Whatevszz · 15/04/2018 14:46

For the first time I have clicked through an advertising link to make a purchase. Even better for MN's revenues surely?

TheQuestingVole · 15/04/2018 14:47

Mumsnet and Justine, thank you for defending women's right to free speech, to discuss ourselves, our bodies, to name misogyny where we see it, and to debate the impacts of legislation that would be enormously consequential for all women and girls in this country.

You have stood up for women against bullies where the Labour Party, Conservative Party, Lib Dems and Women's Equality Party haven't.

Advertisers take note: you should be standing with women against the people who want to deny us the right and ability to speak and to assert our own boundaries. Not because it will hurt you in the pocket if you don't, but because it's the right thing to do.

lattewith3shotsplease · 15/04/2018 14:51

Any advertisers lurking on here The buying power of Mothers,Fathers and their extended family (aunt, uncle, niece,Grandparents etc) is vast Wink

Cocolepew · 15/04/2018 14:54

Thank you FlowersGin

Truscum · 15/04/2018 14:57

And in answer to the many questions about the FWR topic - we'd removed it from Active Conversations as a short-term measure only but we're happy to say it's being moved back into Active Conversations tomorrow when our Tech team are back on*

Whooohoooooo!!!

Grin

Thank you again MNHQ! I was beginning to fear for this space but I will happily eat my words.

CapnHaddock · 15/04/2018 15:09

@AssignedPuuurfect - I'm hoping they get a lot of Gin delivered tomorrow Grin

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 15/04/2018 15:11

Did you send some Haddock?

WeirdCatLady · 15/04/2018 15:11

Yay!

ApplesinmyPocket · 15/04/2018 15:11

Brilliant. It's not easy to stand fast in the face of bullying. Proud of Justine and MN today Flowers

.. and yes, over the years I must have spent 1000s on things mentioned on, recommended by, or advertised on MN. It's a powerful platform.

Mightymucks · 15/04/2018 15:13

I buy things I see advertised on MN anyway. We holiday at Siblu camps regularly and I first saw them on here. MN does tend to advertise things which are relevant to me. Will obviously be continuing to do that as I support the stance on this.

MuddlingMackem · 15/04/2018 15:19

Well done, Justine.

I'm another who has been informed about the self-ID issue and the Girl Guides change of policy by threads on this site, mainly in AIBU, but I have ventured over to Feminism to follow links.

It is so good to see a large company with clout stand up to bullying and the attempts to silence a reasonable discussion.

YearOfYouRemember · 15/04/2018 15:23

For a PP SN was taken out of AC a long time ago due to some idiotic people posting in an extremely non supportive way while also showing their ignorance.

Backingvocals · 15/04/2018 15:29

I did not know that about SN. How absolutely shocking.

I suppose this also highlights the value of active convos. I do sometimes look at threads from active convos that don’t necessarily affect me - just out of a fairly idle interest. That’s exactly how I learned about the TRA agenda. I could also have learned by about different SN issues that way since I have no need to visit the SN board. But obviously I haven’t ...Sad

This is why the openness and randomness of active convos is important in a community.

fatberg · 15/04/2018 15:32

Adoption threads are also hidden from active.

TeenTimesTwo · 15/04/2018 15:35

Adoption threads are also hidden from active.
And a good thing too.

ReluctantCamper · 15/04/2018 15:37

great idea @AssignedPuuurfect , a little bottle of appreciation winging it's way to MNHQ.

Sounds like we're doing our bit for Amazon's profits today too!

fatberg · 15/04/2018 15:39

Oh yes teen, no argument.

forgettingnames · 15/04/2018 15:40

Justine Roberts, more guts than Millwall!

Well done Justine, you have shown a strength and commitment to upholding democracy and debate in our country where our political 'leaders' have failed.

I salute you. This isn't about which side is right on this debate. Its about a mature democracy allowing this debate. The rest of our UK institutions have failed us on this, so Justine should be proud of herself and her company.

MamehaSan · 15/04/2018 15:41

Hurrah! A victory for freedom of speech, at last. Well done, Justine Gin
