Open access link. www.thetimes.co.uk/article/mumsnet-founder-justine-roberts-transgender-activists-try-to-curb-free-speech-on-site-z3sr3nf6q?shareToken=ade388be59ac427155003eff83c5158c

“Transgender activists have contacted Mumsnet advertisers and said they will be organising a boycott of their products if they don’t remove their advertising from Mumsnet,” Roberts said.

“A significant minority of our users feel very strongly about women’s rights and very uneasy [about the proposals]. This is an issue that needs to be discussed and that’s why we’re prepared to take any potential advertising hit.”

Thankyou Justine you're a Star

AdoraBell · 15/04/2018 15:45

Well done Justine and MNHQ

I haven’t been affected, but my teenage DD will need society to stand up for women.

CrustyCob · 15/04/2018 15:50

SmileFlowers
thank you

CapnHaddock · 15/04/2018 15:52

Oi, the gin was my idea! Angry Grin

Might have done Assigned Smile

Notadrill · 15/04/2018 15:52

Excellent. A very vocal group of transactivists are determined to silence and slur women talking about things that affect us. Long may Mumsnet continue to be a place where women can talk freely and learn from each other. It's a unique and amazing place. WELL DONE JUSTINE and team Star

HawthornLantern · 15/04/2018 15:56

Thank you Justine.

Thank you to all the clear minded, articulate women on FWR. I'm another lurker who has learned so much and am grateful to your voices.

So thank you again Justine. This is enormous.

TurningWood · 15/04/2018 15:57

I am sick of women being silenced.
I am sick of lesbian and bi women being told to accept penis.
I am sick of the issues surrounding intersex people being co-opted by activists.
I am sick of the issues surrounding infertile women being used by activists.*
I am sick of menopause or hysterectomy as an excuse to say “but not all women...”
I am sick of women with PCOS being used to prove a trans agenda.
I am sick of poor Latin.
I am sick of prefixes.
I am sick of poor medical knowledge being bandied around as fact on twitter.
I am sick of being told how to be a woman.
I am sick of being told to shut up.

I am sick of the lies, men are not women.
I am sick of children being told that there is something 'wrong' with them if they don't behave as modern society demands.

I’m the main buying power in my family plus a whole host of animals, I will support advertisers who do not allow the bullying of women.

Bullying men and their Stockholm syndrome enablers will not win, the TRUTH will win.

MayCatt · 15/04/2018 16:03

Thank you Justine and Mumsnet HQ. These are important discussions that need space to be heard.

AskBasil · 15/04/2018 16:05

Not being censorious or anything Empress, just wanting acknowledgement of all the women out there who don't have the same wealth or platform as the mumsnet founders, who are being horribly threatened and intimidated and are afraid to speak out in case they lose their jobs, get assaulted (like Maria in Hyde Park) or just generally fall foul of the flabby thinking that passes for liberalism nowadays.

womanhuman · 15/04/2018 16:16

We should start a roll of honour for MNers who spoke up/out (so we can erect statues in their honour once the matriarchy is established Wink).

Ekphrasis · 15/04/2018 16:21

Woo hoo!

YANBU!

Didn't know about ad blocker but I won't use it now!

Ekphrasis · 15/04/2018 16:22

And #TGLWGH all the way.

Bi11yOneMate · 15/04/2018 16:23

Mumsnet (possibly in collaboration with one of their advertisers) should produce lapel badges/slogan products supporting free speech on Mumsnet.
Whatever your stance on trans v women's rights are, polite free speech is essential.

Bi11yOneMate · 15/04/2018 16:24

We could buy them and show our support :)

Ekphrasis · 15/04/2018 16:28

It's interesting that I don't feel like I have to name change to post on a thread that is gender critical or involved in the self id debate now.

This is quite significant.

Pixiepearl · 15/04/2018 16:28

Don’t post on here much. Just lurk...

I cried when I read the Times article this morning. Am so grateful to Mumsnet for providing this space.

CadyHeron · 15/04/2018 16:39

Nice one, Mumsnet.

Jux · 15/04/2018 16:44

How do you send gin to MNHQ? I've got it in my basket at Amazon but they want to deliver it to my address., which would be fine as then I'd have to drink it!

papayasareyum · 15/04/2018 16:48

another one here sick to the stomach with TRAs telling me how to be a woman and coercing children into life altering drugs and surgery to help push their agenda. Well done Mumsnet. My only criticism would be that there’s a vocal “minority.” Those threads are inundated with angry women who are sick of being called cis or told how to be a woman. There’s a huge number of women sick to the back teeth with the TRA agenda. And many many more who are silent through fear of being called transphobic.

papayasareyum · 15/04/2018 16:49

I don’t think it’s a minority of women. I think most women are concerned by this, but feel unable to say much or speak out.

TeenTimesTwo · 15/04/2018 17:04

To be fair, MN couldn't say it is a majority as 50% of users on this site haven't explicitly voiced their opinions.

pombear · 15/04/2018 17:05

This is so important. It's a watershed moment to me. To all those who think there's a rash of 'infiltrators' driving this- I''ve just checked my profile - I've been here since 2003!

Yes it's a business, but I've got the sense over the years that this place is so incredibly important for so many people like me in so many ways, big and small.

I wish I could be more articulate in expressing this but:

  • Thank you Justine and Mumsnet for standing up to the tsunami of silencing tactics, misrepresentation and bullying that seems to be trying to control the ability for females to discuss their concerns.
  • Thank you to all the people on here who have been calmly highlighting the issues of concern for years, from Spartacus and before. I have been listening, learning, researching as a result of your threads.

It is insulting to see so many comments elsewhere that assumes the members of Mumsnet are unthinking sheep that can't think for themselves.

To anyone new to the discussion, this is not an 'anti-trans' discussion as much as some would have you believe. It is pro-woman. It is pro-children's health and wellbeing.

I'd encourage you to head over to the women's rights threads and see what's being discussed.

JustaLittlePrick · 15/04/2018 17:05

I don't like Justines statement at all. With the minority comment she's distancing herself from that view and playing down the numbers of women who do hold it. I presume it was carefully worded and I would be interested to know why she decided to write it that way.
