Open access link. www.thetimes.co.uk/article/mumsnet-founder-justine-roberts-transgender-activists-try-to-curb-free-speech-on-site-z3sr3nf6q?shareToken=ade388be59ac427155003eff83c5158c

“Transgender activists have contacted Mumsnet advertisers and said they will be organising a boycott of their products if they don’t remove their advertising from Mumsnet,” Roberts said.

“A significant minority of our users feel very strongly about women’s rights and very uneasy [about the proposals]. This is an issue that needs to be discussed and that’s why we’re prepared to take any potential advertising hit.”

Thank you so much MNHQ and Justine Flowers

Xenia · 15/04/2018 11:47

Good. Let freedom of speech prevail.

Of course I also support the right of people to boycott things if they want to too in a free society but I don't want MN giving in to this kind of pressure. we need freedom to talk about trans issues.

I have no problems with trans women and those people who need surgery and being kind to them but the kind of shouting, censorship, shoving at rallies, nastiness that seems to come from some (not all) of the extreme end of these trans women is just so like the worst of male bullying sadly.

And self ID is ludicrous. At the very least if we go ahead with it we need to exclude the Self IDers from statistics on crime and women's pay and that kind of thing otherwise women will be damaged by this.

Freshlylaidterf · 15/04/2018 11:48

but this place is special, really special
Agreed

Floisme · 15/04/2018 11:48

Thank you MN Flowers I hope your advertisers are reading too.

And thank you also to the regular posters on the Feminism board Flowers If it hadn't been for you, I still wouldn't have known anything about this issue.

Beyond11cisRetinol · 15/04/2018 11:48

I'm sure it doesn't need saying, but we really need to focus on #tglwgh now - the world is watching......... 😬

MissMary0fSweden · 15/04/2018 11:50

Brilliant.

TerfsUp · 15/04/2018 11:50

Thank you, MNHQ. Flowers

Katara · 15/04/2018 11:57

Adding my voice to the relief that sense has prevailed. Thank you to Janice Turner for highlighting the issue yesterday, to Andrew Gilligan for reporting today and to Justine for upholding free speech in the national press and on here.

I posted on another thread about being about to cancel my Times subscription for financial reasons, it is now staying.

I am closing my Twitter account though.

HarryHarlow · 15/04/2018 11:57

Thank you Justine X

R0wantrees · 15/04/2018 11:58

Huge thanks to MNHQ and Justine.
Also, thanks to those journalists who have been prepared to investigate and report. This is not about being 'anti-trans' but about incredibly important issues which affect everyone.
Hopefully, politicians will now start to listen!

Thank you for putting FWR back in active tomorrow. Great news all around.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/04/2018 11:59

Interesting about the changes to Active Conversations too ... maybe I was wrong and this really is as much about principle as more commercial considerations

If so, brilliantly well done

AntiqueOlive · 15/04/2018 12:01

THANK YOU! Flowers Flowers

That is absolutely brilliant news about FWR and Active.

Something I really really appreciate about MNHQ is that you don’t seem anonymous and you really listen to your community. Thank you again.

Nice to see @Xenia posting again too!

Juells · 15/04/2018 12:10

The Feminist Chat section is so important. I'll admit that I couldn't see what all the fuss was about, thought a few transsexual people in the Ladies was of no consequence, and they needed somewhere to pee just like we do. I got quite a shock when I started reading up on it, and looking at posts by TRAs on twitter. Naively, I'd always assumed that transsexuals were gay (don't know why) and knew nothing about the pressure on lesbian women to accept anyone who self-identified as a woman as a sexual partner, that they were being mean and transphobic if they didn't. How homophobic is that? I'd also always assumed that 'trans' anything meant a full transition had been undertaken, hormones, surgery, the lot. Not that a man with a penis would consider himself entitled to access all female single-sex spaces. It's been a mind-boggling journey, coming to terms with what is actually being demanded of women, on the grounds of 'being inclusive'.

Women and girls have to be at the centre of feminism.

BertrandRussell · 15/04/2018 12:11

Feminism Chat is important for loads of reasons-not just trans issues.

Juells · 15/04/2018 12:12

Yes, of course you're right.

ReappearingWoman · 15/04/2018 12:14

@AskBasil -"Here is some of the stuff I remember buying from MN purely because it was advertised here or because someone here recommended it or praised it:"

Contigo travel mugs Grin - they must have had a huge boost to sales due to the amount of recommendations from MN. I bought 2, and have posted recommendations whenever anyone posts asking for recommendations. It's that mushroom affect & it's something companies are keen to have a slice of. It's why so many want MN to test products & post comments on.

See, this is how MN works & anyone advertising here should know that. It's not just about the adverts either, MNetters are pretty good at getting the word out on stuff that really works, is good value & of use to others. And they're also good at highlighting the opposite so again, MN has influence that many companies covet and respect.

PinkbicyclesinBerlin · 15/04/2018 12:15

I think what MN has done here is extraordinary in terms of showing how important it is to give women their own spaces as a valuable tool to overcoming misogyny and oppression.

The mass media, every single other strand of social media and the political establishment has conspired to drown out and diminish voices, particularly the concerns of women on this issue. When women are given their own space to work through issues they can come to many differing conclusions than the prevailing views. And of course we must acknowledge there are many differing perspective here on MN too. The trouble is there is one single, coherent message coming from outside MN which has utterly defined the issue without any critical analysis allowed because it is shouted down as transphobia. MN have led the way on women’s issues and continue to do so on many issues outside of the trans debate as well. That is a big well done from me too.
