Open access link. www.thetimes.co.uk/article/mumsnet-founder-justine-roberts-transgender-activists-try-to-curb-free-speech-on-site-z3sr3nf6q?shareToken=ade388be59ac427155003eff83c5158c

“Transgender activists have contacted Mumsnet advertisers and said they will be organising a boycott of their products if they don’t remove their advertising from Mumsnet,” Roberts said.

“A significant minority of our users feel very strongly about women’s rights and very uneasy [about the proposals]. This is an issue that needs to be discussed and that’s why we’re prepared to take any potential advertising hit.”

Thank you Justine and MNHQ. I'm one of the generally silent significant minority and would absolutely lose respect for any brand that pulled advertising due to pressure from lobby groups.

I've spoken about self ID with RL friends and colleagues. Most people in RL can see there is a fine balancing act in respecting the rights of both women and transwomen and that sensitive debate is required. In fact I think the significant minority might actually be a majority, but people are scared to be too vocal in RL.

BamALamA · 15/04/2018 10:24

Thank you Mumsnet. It worries me that advertisers and lobbyists are getting to decide what people are allowed to discuss. My adblocker is now off.

viques · 15/04/2018 10:25

fingers crossed that this is a sign that the crazy season is drawing to a close and that reasoned debate and sensible decisions based on reality will prevail.

Well done Justine.

RogerAllamsFangirl · 15/04/2018 10:27

I've started a thread in AIBU about brands I've bought because of Mumsnet. Might want to pile over there and collate everyone's in the same place.

Anlaf · 15/04/2018 10:44

YADNBU

Shutting women up is an age-old quest- I'm thrilled Mumsnet aren't standing for it.

Really glad that Mumsnet will continue to be a place of respectful debate on matters affecting women's rights.

I also am glad that advertisers have (to date) recognised that it won't benefit their brand to pull ads from mumsnet. Flowers to them for that sensible decision.

OnTheList · 15/04/2018 10:50

As on the other thread, thanks a lot Justine.

I have also turned my adblocker off (for this site only) and will actually click through from here to do my shopping Grin

Follyfoot · 15/04/2018 10:50

Just reposting the link to save trawling back too far:

Thanks Justine, and I too will boycott any advertisers who bow to bullies.

Putyourdamnshoeson · 15/04/2018 10:51

YADNBU this is the best thing I've heard for ages

CoteDAzur · 15/04/2018 10:53

Well done @JustineMumsnet. Thank you for standing up for women. And thank you for continuing to provide this space for women to voice our concerns on transgender topics.

I'm whitelisting MumsNet on my ad blocker.

AskBasil · 15/04/2018 10:55

Of course we're not a significant minority.

Literally nobody outside of the internet crazyland, believes that if you're a woman, your genital organ might be a penis, unless they have serious reality issues.

Even the woke leftybros who pretend to believe it, look a bit sheepish if you ask them if they'd sleep with a "woman with a penis" if they're straight, or a "man with a vagina" if they're gay. Because they wouldn't, but they can't say so, because they'd have to admit they've been virtue-signalling in order to unleash their misogyny on women.

Everyone knows that men have penises and women have vaginas and that biological sex is real. This is not a minority view. This is what the majority believe and it is scientifically accurate, not hateful bigotry. And it does not imply that you accept gender roles or sexist stereotypes as inherent, if you know that biological sex is a real thing.

Pretending it's a minority view, is just a way of signalling to the rest of the media, that mumsnet isn't a heretic.

HeyBells · 15/04/2018 10:56

Thank you Justine and MNHQ Flowers.

Years long mostly lurker and very rare poster on feminist chat board, which is now my goto board on MN.

y0rkier0se · 15/04/2018 10:57

Great news Grin

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 15/04/2018 11:03

Thank you Justine and Mumsnet

You have restored my faith this morning. Please put FWR back in active too.

I have also turned off my ad blocker for mumsnet in gratitude.

I have also bought many items on mumsnet users' recomendations, including:

Dyson
Lush
Boden
All manner of skincare recommended on Style & Beauty
All manner of household products
Various clothing recommended in Style & Beauty
Now a total convert to John Lewis
Ditto Aldi
Even tried zooflora (but it's minging)

Although M&S does get a frequent (and often well deserved) bollocking on Style & Beauty

Advertisers - piss off mumsnetters at your peril

Viva Mumsnet!

BertrandRussell · 15/04/2018 11:07

Is there any news about unhiding FWR?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/04/2018 11:11

this is a commercial decision by MN to protect their brand. If advertisers show that they value bullying, misognyist men over mothers who actually buy their shit, they will lose a lot of customers and damage their own brands

I'm inclined to agree. As a PP said, it's also true that MN could have rolled over and removed discussion spaces completely, but the outcry over that ... "womens' forum gags women!!!" ... wouldn't have done the brand much good either

Amid all the noise and fury it's a numbers game in the end: do you prioritise a few noisy protesters or the advertising attraction of 12 million members?

GorgeousJaws · 15/04/2018 11:12

How refreshing. Well done on your stance.

totorosfluffytummy · 15/04/2018 11:21

Minority? we've such a long way to go

DawnMumsnet · 15/04/2018 11:32

Morning all,

Justine will no doubt be along later, but for now we'd just like to say thanks for all the support shown here. We really appreciate it. Flowers

And in answer to the many questions about the FWR topic - we'd removed it from Active Conversations as a short-term measure only but we're happy to say it's being moved back into Active Conversations tomorrow when our Tech team are back on.

Thanks again, everyone. Here's to civil debate.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 15/04/2018 11:34

Thanks again, everyone. Here's to civil debate

ReluctantCamper · 15/04/2018 11:39

Whoop, whoop!

So proud to be a mumsnetter this morning. I know that sounds daft because all you have to do is fill in a form and have an unhealthy interest in toilet brushes, but this place is special, really special.

Thank you Justine, I know you will be getting hassle for this, and thank you MNHQ too.

0phelia · 15/04/2018 11:39
