Open access link. www.thetimes.co.uk/article/mumsnet-founder-justine-roberts-transgender-activists-try-to-curb-free-speech-on-site-z3sr3nf6q?shareToken=ade388be59ac427155003eff83c5158c

“Transgender activists have contacted Mumsnet advertisers and said they will be organising a boycott of their products if they don’t remove their advertising from Mumsnet,” Roberts said.

“A significant minority of our users feel very strongly about women’s rights and very uneasy [about the proposals]. This is an issue that needs to be discussed and that’s why we’re prepared to take any potential advertising hit.”

Argh look at what you made me do I have only gone and joined mumsnet. I have been lurking for a long time but wanted to add my thanks to Justine and the team. I also want to thank posters on the fwr who have helped me clarify my own thoughts on this issue. Agree with some other poster I suspect this is a (largely silent) majority rather than a sizeable minority

DarthArts · 15/04/2018 12:18

Great day today Grin

  • Justine standing up for free speech
  • girl guides letter
  • petition hitting 10k

I hope people are starting to realise that asking questions about potential changes to the law and examining how current law is being both mis-understood and/or not implemented are topics that should not be silenced.

These are important issues that have serious consequences for women and the trans community.

It's vital to get this right and to do so means being able to talk about the implications involved based on evidence and facts.

TalkingintheDark · 15/04/2018 12:20

YES!!! So pleased to hear this - really gutsy of Justine to go public about this, to get the message out there that these are the bullying tactics being used, and that they won’t work. So much appreciated.
💐💐💐

And more 💐💐💐for that update from Dawn too! Fantastic news all round.

Jux · 15/04/2018 12:22

Thank you Justine. Adblocker coming off on my pc - anyone know how to turn off ad blockers on iPad?

Beyond11cisRetinol · 15/04/2018 12:28

Jux, I tried whitelisting on the iPad but it didn't work, so I switched the whole thing off

Flibbertyjibbit · 15/04/2018 12:32

IronicWittyUsername · 15/04/2018 12:34

Well done

TalkingintheDark · 15/04/2018 12:34

Juells Naively, I'd always assumed that transsexuals were gay (don't know why) and knew nothing about the pressure on lesbian women to accept anyone who self-identified as a woman as a sexual partner, that they were being mean and transphobic if they didn't. How homophobic is that? I'd also always assumed that 'trans' anything meant a full transition had been undertaken, hormones, surgery, the lot. Not that a man with a penis would consider himself entitled to access all female single-sex spaces. It's been a mind-boggling journey, coming to terms with what is actually being demanded of women, on the grounds of 'being inclusive'.

Similar trajectory here! My eyes were opened by the Primark changing rooms thread in AIBU, which shows the importance of keeping the debate on this board too. And that in turn led to me frequenting FWR, and becoming aware of the current discussions around so many other issues. As a bit of a lapsed feminist in the preceding years, that has been very rewarding too.

RandyBudgie · 15/04/2018 12:36

Just de lurking to say WELL DONE JUSTINE! So good that we can debate the issue of women losing their rights here.

It was thanks to the mn feminism boards that I became aware of trans activism, a big thank you to all the posters on there who had been tirelessly speaking out about this Flowers

pigsDOfly · 15/04/2018 12:40

Well Done, brave move.

KatherinaMinola · 15/04/2018 12:40

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 15/04/2018 12:40

Thank you MNHQ and advertisers. I will wholeheartedly support any companies I see on here in the future. Mumsnet makes me buy a LOT of stuff —not the pink dress though—

CountFosco · 15/04/2018 12:51

Thanks Mumsnet Flowers

PositivelyPERF · 15/04/2018 12:51

Sorry, but I’m actually sitting here crying. Mixture of happiness because of the amazing Mumsnetters, MNHQ and that fantastic article and also sorry for the lost generation that is getting caught up in this insidious activism, including a dear sweet and vulnerable family member.

Thank you Justine and MNHQ, you do more good than even you are aware of. 🌹

TalkingintheDark · 15/04/2018 12:52

psychomath Where do people work that they're afraid to talk about these things? Not disbelieving, just curious - I can't imagine anyone at my own workplace giving a shit about anyone else's views on trans people, and it's pretty liberal/left-wing.

Genuinely glad to hear that thought policing isn’t in operation where you work. Long may it continue.

I think the worst places for this are in the public sector: academia above all, plus other educational settings, healthcare (a lot of people in the NHS say they have to be very careful), also those who work in politics.

Many places have “equality” training run by what are essentially TRA organistions, such as GIRES. They position their agenda as the face of liberalism and progress, as a “neutral” perspective and the only acceptable one, and there is a lot of pressure on people to go along with the ideology or be branded a bigot.

TRAs are also known to have contacted people’s employers directly and tried to get them sacked, one reason many woman are so fearful about speaking out under their own names.

There was a thread about it in FWR:

PinkbicyclesinBerlin · 15/04/2018 12:54

Yes and to MN advertisers just to be absolutely clear, like most women I am the dominant spender of money in my family. I decide on probably 90% of the spending decisions for the family. MN has given me tips on fashion, cars, holidays, major house purchases.

I would pity the foolish companies who undervalue women’s spending power in families and retaliate against MN for allowing women a voice. That would be an incredibly foolish move imho.
