“Transgender activists have contacted Mumsnet advertisers and said they will be organising a boycott of their products if they don’t remove their advertising from Mumsnet,” Roberts said.

“A significant minority of our users feel very strongly about women’s rights and very uneasy [about the proposals]. This is an issue that needs to be discussed and that’s why we’re prepared to take any potential advertising hit.”

Another one saying well done - and have turned off my ad-blocker in support.

Juells · 15/04/2018 09:24

On the other hand, I'm not happy to hear that FWR won't be showing up in active convos as that's how I normally access them.

I've set my Mumsnet bookmark to the Feminism Chat section

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights
so I go straight there, then can access other active discussions from there.

My adblocker is off for MN as well. Posters may not realise how important that is, for sites to be able to continue functioning.

Please turn off adblockers to show your appreciation of MN's stand on free speech.

This is wonderful news. Thank you so much Justine and Mumsnet for not given in to bullies who don't like peaceful debate about reasonable concerns. More balls than Millwall.

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 15/04/2018 09:25

'More balls than Millwall'

Thanks Justine and Mumsnet. Even if I wasn't one of the significant minority it is such a relief to see someone with clout defending free speech Flowers Gin

AfterSchoolWorry · 15/04/2018 09:25

Yay, hopefully the tide is turning.

Thanks MN. And thanks The Times, you have a new subscriber here!

If you believe that women should be consulted about the effects of proposed changes to the law on trans self-identification, please consider signing this petition

Well done Justine.🍾
If it wasnt for MN i wouldnt be aware of the bullying tactics of trans activists and the attempts to silence women in so many areas.
Free speech is vital and women need to discuss this to protect ourselves and future generations.

Any advertiser who caves to bullying tactics can sod off. Wont be getting my business.

PutTheChocEggDown · 15/04/2018 09:30

I think it's good that they are resisting the pressure to ban debate BUT I don't agree with hiding the feminism boards. A lot of what I learned about this debate was because of threads popping up in active conversations. I think more women need to be aware of this debate so they can form their views in a nuanced way.

QuantamBaby · 15/04/2018 09:30

Bravo Justine!

I didn't realise the feminist chat threads weren't appearing in active.....so that's feminism and special needs not in my active threads. I'd quite like that to change.

KikiMadeMeDoIt · 15/04/2018 09:31

Thank you Justine 💚💜💚💜💚💜

I’m a member of the significant minority and I do wonder what the numbers are. I guess it would be impossible to collate from 12 million unique viewers.

I’ve seen the arguments for taking FWR out of Active, but I feel it belongs there. People who want to fight will find the boards anyway, but someone having a browse might see something that piques their interest.

HappyInL0nd0n · 15/04/2018 09:33

Absolutely delighted to see Mumsnet showing a backbone here.

I fully respect transgender people and appreciate I have a lot more to learn about their issues, struggles and preferences. I show every courtesy to those who identify as a different gender to the one they were born into and think there is a lot of hysteria around this issue which has been overblown.

But there are many unanswered questions about how their right to self-expression can be resolved in the face of women's rights to male-free spaces (refuges, prisons, intimate medical examinations, sporting contests, etc.), and we have to be free to debate these issues respectfully.

I would absolutely boycott an advertiser who pulled revenue from Mumsnet for allowing respectful debate on a topical issue which primarily impacts women, and I encourage Mumsnet to name and shame those advertisers putting pressure on the administrators.

Pratchet · 15/04/2018 09:33

I hope advertisers realise that many women are too afraid to speak up even anonymously. But the one thing they can quietly do without having to make it public is boycott.

daisyhead08 · 15/04/2018 09:33

I've been lurking on MN for years. I'm hugely impressed with the stance Justine has taken here so joining up to show support in a very small way.

Window2My · 15/04/2018 09:34

I didn't realise the feminist chat threads weren't appearing in active.....so that's feminism and special needs not in my active threads. I'd quite like that to change.

I agree on both topics.

Why are they not appearing in Active Convos? Hmm Hmm

Stanislas · 15/04/2018 09:35

Proud to belong to the significant minority. Well done Justine. I subscribe to the Times .
