“Transgender activists have contacted Mumsnet advertisers and said they will be organising a boycott of their products if they don’t remove their advertising from Mumsnet,” Roberts said.

“A significant minority of our users feel very strongly about women’s rights and very uneasy [about the proposals]. This is an issue that needs to be discussed and that’s why we’re prepared to take any potential advertising hit.”

Well done MN. Thank you for your support in standing up to the trans activist bullies.

"I think it's good that they are resisting the pressure to ban debate BUT I don't agree with hiding the feminism boards. A lot of what I learned about this debate was because of threads popping up in active conversations. I think more women need to be aware of this debate so they can form their views in a nuanced way."
+1 totally agree with this

TrollHunterGeneral · 15/04/2018 09:38

Thank you Justine FlowersGin

TonTonMacoute · 15/04/2018 09:38

These people are not very bright, are they? I would think that only a tiny number of people support them and their campaign to shut down all discussion of this subject. A few thousand at most. What difference will a boycott of couple of thousand people make, compared with 12 million mumsnetters?

BiddydeBint · 15/04/2018 09:38

Good.

Another one who has turned ad blocker off

HumphreyCobblers · 15/04/2018 09:38

This is great news to wake up to.

I said on the thread in FWR, thank you so much for standing up to people who try to intimidate into acquiesce. It makes one wonder why they are so very scared of debate?

peanut2017 · 15/04/2018 09:40

@MsGameandWatching yes you are right it was Paris Lees that was speaking at the MN conference

Mydoghatesthebath · 15/04/2018 09:40

Brilliant stuff

Theblueplanet · 15/04/2018 09:41

Long time lurker logging in to say YANBU!

I am immensely grateful to the posters on the Feminism Chat pages for the time, energy and thoughtfulness that they put into explaining calmly, rationally and patiently the issues with the GRA that will have a massively detrimental effect on the rights of women and girls. Mumsnet has opened my eyes to this.

I have signed the petition and my name appears on the GGUK letter in today's Sunday Times. I would love to attend a meeting but every time I look into local events there are well organised, and quite frankly intimidating, opposition protests.

Thanks Justine for continuing to allow debate. Feminism Chat is now my 'go to' Mumsnet page - please reconsider its inclusion into 'Active Convos'.

I've been impressed with the respectful debate on Mumsnet. I, along with the vast majority of posters, just want to protect my and my daughters hard fought rights - I'm not a bigot, I'm not unkind, I'm not violent or exclusionary, I just want a respectful debate about the issues.

Namelesswonder · 15/04/2018 09:42

Thank you MN HQ - freedom of speech is everything.

I’m a lurker on the Feminist Boards, never posted but reading and learning and I suspect there are quite a lot of us.

errorofjudgement · 15/04/2018 09:42

Thank you Mumsnet, I’m very proud to be a member of Mumsnet today, and applaud your stand in not bowing down to bullies.

TeenTimesTwo · 15/04/2018 09:42

Well done Justine & Mumsnet.

14 to go to get to 10,000.

when they will at least have to consider the issue about women being consulted about the changes.

MN - if any advertisers pull out, you will make sure we know which ones, won't you?

FlaviaAlbia · 15/04/2018 09:43

@hazyjane you can see special needs in active if you go to customise, there's an option in there.

Bekabeech · 15/04/2018 09:43

Thanks Justne - Ad blocker turned off!

BertrandRussell · 15/04/2018 09:43

“A lot of what I learned about this debate was because of threads popping up in active conversations”

It’s not just this debate. There are a thousand feminist issues that need to be openly discussed, not treated as niche subjects. The ongoing debate about rape and rape culture, the abortion referendum in Ireland, pornography, the sex industry, FGM, the pay gap, “wife work”, women and girls in STEM, parenting boys in an atmosphere of toxic masculinity, the portrayal of women in the media, everyday sexism, education about consent- I could go on. Women new to all this stuff, and there are plenty of them, are not going to seek out a hidden corner of Mumsnet - these issues need to be there to catch the eye.

Thanks J xx

A significant minority of our users feel very strongly about women’s rights . I'm one of the silent (probably) significant majority who also feel strongly about women's rights but don't post much on the feminism/ transgender debates. I'm so glad MN is standing up to bullies.

user1487175389 · 15/04/2018 09:47

I think Justine needs to talk demographics. Mumsnet advertisers like the White Company and Boden are not the shops of choice for the average crappily haired, poorly dressed SJW. Ergo a boycott by these people is going to make no difference to their bottom line. Stopping advertising on MN is, on the other hand, going to lead to advertising 12 million fewer members of their actual demographic.

Ruffian · 15/04/2018 09:47

That is such a gutsy, principled stand against unacceptable bullying. MN have been a lifeline for so many people in so many ways and this is another massively important one. Justine deserves a Halo

SideOrderofSprouts · 15/04/2018 09:48

Signed the petition

dangerrabbit · 15/04/2018 09:49

Great news and vey brave of Justine, where it seems other places are just being shut down and not allowing debate to take place. Good for the times for highlighting this too.

Ellenripleysalienbaby · 15/04/2018 09:50

Thank you Justine for this. And also thank you to the many posters on FWR who have been talking about this for years, who have not stopped trying to get the issues out there, who have put across the arguments so eloquently, and who continue to do so much outside of Mumsnet to actually try and ensure that women's rights are protected. You are all amazing!

So close to 10,000 now!

daffodildelight · 15/04/2018 09:50

Why is it ok to try and boycott Daily Mail but not feminism threads?
I have to say I find the feminism threads very prejudiced and anti trans women.
Yet the Daily Mail is accused of being prejudiced and people are actively encouraged by posters here to boycott it and that seems very acceptable to people.
It seems it's ok restricting freedom of speech for newspapers people don't like but not for feminists - who seem just as bad as the Daily Mail in their intolerance levels.

Beyond11cisRetinol · 15/04/2018 09:51

Yy Bertrand. At the very, very, very least, we need to be able to turn FWR links back on - like you can do with SN chat.
(But putting it back in full stop would be better!)

PositivelyPERF · 15/04/2018 09:51

I’m so excited. Nearly there.
